"Pedar (translated here as The Father, though the film's working title was The Stepfather)
is about 14-year-old Mehrollah, whose father dies and who heads off to a southern port
city to find work and support the family.

When he returns home, however, he discovers that his mother has remarried to the local
cop, no less and begins a campaign of silent protest against his stepfather, which
gradually becomes more dangerous until a stroke of fate forces Mehrollah and his stepfather
to come to terms with one another."

"This film can be described as a companion piece to Majidi's highly acclaimed Color of Paradise. In that movie, in which a father saw his blind son as a burden and not as a blessing, we (& eventually the father) began to "see" the world from the blind boy's view and in doing so saw a much richer, meaningful world. Here, the characters of the father and the son are embodied in a single person: Yusef who after 38 years of being blind regains his sight. What he sees, however, is quite different to what he "saw" as a blind man, and not necessarily more beautiful or rewarding. Majidi takes the viewer to a higher, more spiritual world and in doing so creates another masterpiece. Majidi's movies are visually stunning and have such a profound effect on the viewer that when we leave the cinema, we see the world in a different light. Parviz Parastoui, one of the best actors in the Iranian cinema and theatre, is outstanding as Yusef. Also worth mentioning is Mahmood Kelari's exceptional photography. As in all Majidi films, there are scenes which will stay with you long after the movie is over."

Rang-e khoda (The Color of Paradise) (1999) - Majid Majidi

Mohammad, a boy at Tehran's institute for the blind, waits for his dad to pick him up for summer vacation. While waiting, he realizes a baby bird has fallen from its nest: he chases away a cat, finds the bird, climbs a tree, and puts it back. His father finally comes and takes him to their village where his sisters and granny await. The lad is a loving student of nature and longs for village life with his family, but his father is ashamed of him, wanting to farm the boy out to clear the way for marriage to a woman who knows nothing of this son. Over granny's objections, dad apprentices Mohammad far from home to a blind carpenter. Can anything bring father and son together?

Baran (2001) - Majid Majidi

Movie Plot:

Baran works like a short story, delivering its message in terse, rapid fire punches. And without much effort, it leaves you exhausted after a mere 98 minutes. Majidi, who won the directing award at Iran’s Fajr Film Festival, is less of a polemic than his contemporaries, but Baran is his most politically attuned work to date, even if it deals with its subjects in oblique, almost poetic terms. Afghanistan, for its part, remains a potent off-screen presence, a beckoning force that can be felt but not understood.

It deals with a brother and sister and their adventures over a lost pair of shoes, while also touching upon the more serious subject of the political situation in Iran as well as class differences between the rich and the poor and daily urban life.
