Dasavatharam (The Ten Avatars) (2008) - K.S. Ravikumar

The movie revolves around the chaos theory and the butterfly effect, bringing together the lives of several individuals during the week prior to the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami. Primarily, the story revolves around a research scientist who loses a biological weapon of mass destruction in the United States of America. The weapon is also sought by an ex-CIA officer for his own use. Thus begins a cat and mouse chase throughout several countries, as the scientist and the ex-CIA officer vie for the possession of the weapon. The proceedings are affected by several characters and their issues which disrupt the weapon from going to the hands of the ex-CIA officer. The story occurs within a week building up to the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami.

Kamal Haasan appears in ten different roles, breaking the record for an actor's portrayal of the most different characters.

Pushpak (1988) - Srinivasa Rao Singeetham

An educated, unemployed young graduate male (Kamal Hassan) dreams of living well. One evening, he finds a drunken industrialist passed out in a gutter, with a lot of cash in a briefcase. Tired of living a simple and poof life, the young male, takes over the identity of the drunk, and decides to live life to the fullest and takes the opportunity to switch places with him. He finds love, intrigue, and the good life in his new home, Pushpak, a hotel where the industrialist was booked in. He finds out that the drunk is living in a this hotel, and moves in without any problems. Once he settles in the hotel room, he finds that the hotel has employed a magician (K.S. Ramesh), who daughter (Amala) is very attractive. He befriends the daughter, and treats her to her heart's content. One day while watching TV in the hotel room, he finds that someone (Tinnu Anand) had unauthorizedly entered his hotel room to kill him. Horrified he must now make a decision whether to continue living the easy life and die at the hands of man he does not even know; Or go back to his simple and poor lifestyle.

Kuruthipunal (1996) - Kamal Hassan

The film starts with two sincere police officers Adhi Narayanan (Kamal Hassan) and Abbas (Arjun). Abbas sends two secret vigilant officers (Dhanush and another police officer) to mingle with a terror group headed by Badri (Nasser), with the task of providing updates about the movements of the group back to Abbas.

In an accident, Adhi happens to get the opportunity to arrest Badri (the leader of the group). There is an interesting mental battle between Adhi and Badri. Threatening to bring harm to Adhi's family if kept in police custody, Badri displays his power by demonstrating how he is able to sneak in members of his group anywhere, including police protected quarters. Adhi, afraid for his family's safety, gives in and lets Badri escape.

How Adhi turns back to his original self is the crux of the story.

This film was India's official entry to the Oscars in the year 1995.

Nayakan ( Hero)(1987) - Mani Ratnam

A terrific gangster epic in the Godfather style —TIME Magazine, Sep. 16, 1996Nayagan (1987) (a.k.a. Nayakan) is a Tamil feature film written and directed by Mani Ratnam. Nayagan means 'The Hero' or 'The Leader' in Tamil.Nayagan has been called "The Godfather" of Tamil cinema, as it portrays the life of an underworld don in Bombay (now Mumbai). While the film draws inspiration from "The Godfather trilogy", it is well adapted to an Indian scenario. The story is based on the life of a real underworld don called "Varada" or Varadarajan Mudaliar. The film sympathetically depicts the struggle of South Indians living in Mumbai.The don is played by the actor Kamal Haasan. The cast also includes Saranya, Karhtika, Nasser, Delhi Ganesh and Janagaraj. The film music was composed by Ilaiyaraaja, a well-known music director for Tamil films. The film also went on to win an Indian National Award for Kamal Haasan for his brilliant performance. Nayagan was nominated by India as its entry for the Best Foreign Language Film for the Academy Awards in 1987.Nayagan is in the Time Magazine "All-Time 100 Best Films" issued in 2005.

Movie Plot:

After having witnessed his dad being killed by the local police, and being orphaned and left homeless, Shakti Velu developes a hate, and distrust of the police. He is befriended by another homeless boy named Selva, who asks him to accompany him to the city's slumlands, where they live with a kind-hearted Muslim named Karim Lala, and his daughter, Shama. This is where Shakti and Selva spend their childhood. When they mature, they take to petty crime. Here too, Shakti witnesses police brutality and atrocities, especially at the hands of sadistic, alcoholic, and womanizing Police Inspector Ratan Singh. When Karim Lala is arrested, jailed, and found hanging by his neck in police custody, Shakti hunts down Ratan Singh, and kills him in broad daylight in front of the several hundred people. An investigation is launched, but no one comes forward as a witness. Thus Shakti gets his reputation as a Don with a good heart. Shakti marries local prostitute, Neelu, and has two children, Suraj and Sarita. He becomes even more powerful and influential all over the region, and his working partners are powerful criminal dons who have ruled the underground for eons. Shakti eventually replaces these dons, and becomes the only Don. This creates enemies for him and his family, but he believes since he has not really done any harm to anyone, he and his family will be safe. It is this belief that will take a heavy toll on his life and that of his family, when the truth dawns that he, himself, is responsible for being kind to a man, who will ultimately bring forward ruin to the Velu family

Anbe Sivam (Love is God) (2003) - Kamal Hassan

Nallasivam (Kamal Haasan) and Anbarasu (Madhavan) are drawn together by the strigs of fate, since they come into contact at the Bhuvaneshwar airport. Anbarasu is an advertisement director, while Nallasivam is a trade unionist. Fate entwines their travel plans, and they end up travelling to Chennai together. In the course of their journey, Anbarasu, born with a golden spoon, is touched by the realities of the sufferings of a normal human being when he witnesses the injured during a train accident, and he volunteers to donate his blood, which is of a very rare group. The flashback of Nallasivam is recounted during one of their combined journeys. Nallasivam is a communit trade unionist, who fight for higher wages for his comrades. By chance, he falls in love with the daughter Bala(Kiran). Due to oppositions from Bala's father Padaiyacchi (Nasser), they plan to run away and get married, but unfortunately, Nallasivam meets with an accident which disfigures him. He is told by Padaiyacchi that Bala is married, so he pursues his communist agenda, during the course of which he meets Anbarasu. Anbarau is drawn to Nallasivam in the end, and claims him as his adopted brother, and forces Nallasivam to come to his wedding. Once at the wedding hall, kamal discovers teh bride to be none other than his sweetheart, Bala. When Padaiyacchi discovers him at the hall, his is in panic, and pleads for him to leave. Santhana Bharathy as Padaiyacchi's henchman plays out a sentimental scene in the end. The movie is more of a parallel cinema, with Kamal and Madhavan acting their roles to stellar effeciency. Kiran appears for a very small role, much to the disappointment of many.

Virumandi (2004) - Kamal Hassan

A reporter (Rohini) researching the death penalty in India is recounted the story of a farm owner Virumandi (Kamal) whose role in a clan feud between Naicker (Napoleon) and Kothalla Devar (Pasupathi) leads him to death row. As the story unfolds, there is a riot in the jail, and the only one who can get the reporter safely out of the prison is Virumandi.

Hey Ram (2000) - Kamal Hassan

The movie begins at present day with Saketh Ram (Kamal Haasan), an 89-year-old South Indian Brahmin who is dying. The scene reverts back to the past as Saketh remembers the 1940's, when he and his good friend, Amjad Ali Khan (Shahrukh Khan) were archaeologists working together under their boss, Mortimer Wheeler, in Mohanjodaro (Indus River Valley Civilization) in Karachi. Relations are pleasant between the Indians and the English, and Saket and Amjad do not approve of the Partition and the creation of Pakistan. Aparna Sen, Saketh's simple Bengali wife is living in Calcutta in the midst of riots and chaos over the issue of the formation of Pakistan. Saket goes to Calcutta and is swept into the madness. In one instance, Saket saves an innocent Punjabi girl from the hands of a Muslim gang. The Muslims are angered and decide to take revenge; the group is headed by Aparna's tailor, Altaf, who break into Saket's home. They brutally rape and maliciously slit Rani's throat, and the scene, so vividly shot, leaves little for the imagination. This itself turns Saketh Ram maniacal and puts him on a wild killing spree, avenging his wife's disgrace and killing every possible Muslim in sight. On his apparent sortie he comes across a bunch of right-winged Hindu fundamentalists, led by Abhyankar (Atul Kulkarni). Abhyankar preaches him about the need of the Hindus to come together and save their brethren from the Islamists who according to them are mere intruders from across the Khyber.. He soon joins fanatical Hindus and loses sense of himself, falling victim to the chaos and religious hatred around him. He is also urged to marry again and agrees to it reluctantly. Mahatma Gandhi (Naseeruddin Shah) is solely blamed for the division of India and of the two religions. His wrath gets the better of him as he pledges to take revenge co-opted by the Hindutva Brigade and he travels from Calcutta to Madras to kill Mahatma Gandhi. There he meets his second wife (Vasundhara Das) , another light eyed beauty. Saketh Ram does not love her but only marries her under his father's (Kavignar Vaali) orders. Saket Ram is entrusted the task of killing Mahatma Gandhi, after his friend Abhyankar is left paralyzed in a freak accident. He has a change of heart only when he falls prey to a bunch of Muslims, where he also meets old chum Amjad Khan (Shah Rukh Khan), an ardent Gandhi admirer. At the climax, Saketh Ram is prepared to murder Mahatma Gandhi but is stopped by Amjad. He later realizes that without Gandhi, India would be destroyed. He goes up to Gandhi and begs for forgiveness but Gandhi says he has to go and that he has no time for his apologies. When Gandhi is about to leave, a young man approaches and kills Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi with a gun. The movie ends with the old Saketh Ram, slowly dying on his death bed.
