Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2004 Academy Awards, writer-director Nimrod Antal's debut is a thrilling, claustrophobic, wild ride through the subway system in the Hungarian capital of Budapest. Sandor Csanyi stars as Bulcsu, the leader of a small crew that patrols the underground making sure that passengers have purchased a ticket. However, the men actually have little power themselves, so many people that they stop humiliate them, physically and verbally abuse them, and easily run away. Within this small world, Bulcsu and his gang, which includes the older Professor (Zoltan Mucsi), the narcoleptic Muki (Csaba Pindroch), the diminutive Lecso (Sandor Badar), and the young and innocent Tibi (Zsolt Nagy), battle Gonzo (Balazs Lazar) and his far more successful group of ticket checkers...

IMDB

Synopsis: The Budapest subway system, the worlds second oldest, is a dark, labyrinthine netherworld as vast and various as the city above it. Of the hordes of people who can be found there, most are passing through on their ways to better, brighter places. But, there are those who spend most of their lives underground--the beleaguered ticket inspectors or controllers, who are assigned in teams to various sections of the system, and whose thankless job it is to ensure that no passengers ride without paying. Bulcsu, the defacto leader of one such inspection squad, is in his late twenties. Working with an eclectic and especially disheveled bunch, Bulcsu is assigned to the least savory and safe area of the underground. Sequestered in subterranean squalor, these men find that night has become indistinguishable from day and that living has become almost indistinguishable from dying. Most of the inspectors live this way without care or question. But Bulcsu is clearly a breed apart. No one knows much of anything about him or his way of life away from the job. From time to time he runs into someone he used to know from above ground. When this happens, Bulcsu either avoids contact or lies about his current occupation. Then, in the wee hours of the morning, when his shift is over, he finds a secluded platform far away from everyone and everything and goes to sleep. Bulcsu and his mates do their job, albeit halfheartedly, and inspect tickets. A rival group of inspectors, all slick and polished, compete with them for better placement and perks. Bulcsu and his cronies cannot compete on the job, but find ways to get even after hours. Then, as always, there appears a beautiful, mysterious young woman, Sofie with whom Bulcsu falls instantly in love. And, as always, there is danger--here, in the form of a shadowy killer who appears out of nowhere and pushes unsuspecting passengers under the relentless wheels of oncoming trains. Because Bulcsu never goes home, he becomes a suspect in these slayings. Having fallen for Sofie, Bulcsu finds that life once again has meaning. But, with the authorities and a killer at his heels, there is only one way out: he himself must apprehend the man in the shadows, the demon who haunts this underworld.

Ein Lied von Liebe und Tod (Gloomy Sunday ) (1999) -Rolf Schübel

Image

Budapest in the thirties. The restaurant owner Laszlo hires the pianist András to play in his restaurant. Both men fall in love with the beautiful waitress Ilona who inspires András to his only composition. His song of Gloomy Sunday is, at first, loved and then feared, for its melancholic melody triggers off a chain of suicides. The fragile balance of the erotic ménage à trois is sent off kilter when the German Hans goes and falls in love with Ilona as well.

Description:
In this surrealistic movie from the director of My 20th Century, the French police seek help from Simon, a visionary living in Budapest to solve a murder case. Whilst in Paris, Simon falls in love with Jeanne, although they do not speak each other's language. When Jeanne leaves for a couple of days, Peter, another visionary, calls Simon for a duel: They both have to spend three days buried alive. Will Simon ever meet his love again? (...)

Hungarian wizard, summoned to France to help police, meets various disciples: Simon is a real magician with great mental powers to perceive reality and influence people. He answers a summons to the French police reluctantly, in exchange for cash. In Paris he meets a female interpreter and a black policeman named Paul who both practically worship him, and crowds recognize him everywhere, but he's primarily interested in a young woman named Jeanne whom he sees from afar and helps avoid harassment for her street questionnaire on public religious views. Simon easily solves a murder investigation with an insight into the dead man's favorite houseplant. Simon tracks Jeanne who is friendly to him but puzzled, especially when he seems to answer her questions randomly; it takes a while for her to realize that Simon doesn't speak French. A stage magician named Peter, who has long considered Simon to be his nemesis, invites Simon to join him in a stunt of surviving burial for three days. Simon casually agrees, and falls into a trance the night before the trick just to practice. Paul and the interpreter beg Simon to not go, but Simon is buried with Peter. Peter survives with his techniques and equipment, but Simon, who insisted on being simply covered with dirt, is unearthed dead by Paul. Nonetheless, Simon is soon seen again by Jeanne.

NOTES: gently mystical film based on legend may baffle or delight: This film is artistic and mysterious, with a meditative pace and some truly hypnotic scenes. I liked the recurring movements through a large railway switchyard set to classical music, a motif which seemed to symbolize the parallel destinies of many characters and how our mystical protagonist can switch between them with insightful ease. Enjoyable too were the understated moments when Simon, whom the director did not want to make too obvious in his real magical abilities, can just gaze at people and by a subtle gesture change their behavior. Simon uses this remarkable ability with aloof hesitation, as if to make clear that he is operating from a different plane of reality and regrets interfering with human will. Like a truly old soul, Simon functions in tune with the universe, able to perceive powers that others miss and push them with the gentlest of touches. To solve the crime, he simply naps until awakened by sunlight on his face to greet the consciousness of the giant potted palm, thus realizing that with some sensitive lab equipment the plant will function as a reliable detector for the murderer. Simon’s methods are in total contrast to those of his nemesis Peter, the egotistical stage magician who is loud, vain, and anything but subtle.
As the movie progresses with increasing illogic, it becomes both important and confounding to know the fundamental allegory. The Biblical legend of Simon Magus is that of a first century Gnostic sorceror around whom a religion formed called Simonianism. Followers believed that Simon was, like Christ, God in human form. After Jesus’ death, Peter and Simon often confronted each other, with one heresy being that Simon tried to buy healing powers of the Holy Spirit from the apostles. For this sin, Simon is called the first heretic by the Catholic church. Simon Magus died by different accounts all having to do with his false faith – some say Simon could levitate but he fell to his death when Peter called upon the true God to expose him, others that Simon died while trying to imitate Jesus and rise again after having been buried for three days. This last reference is clearly the film’s ending, but the metaphor seems ambivalent at best, anti-church at worst, since the Peter character is such a nasty fellow and Simon doesn’t stay dead, but is indirectly seen to crawl out of the ground and return to his Jeanne in time for their appointed rendezvous. The implication is that the Gnosticism of Simon Magus was the true occult power, known to only the chosen (Gnostics generally believed in the abilities of the individual to know God directly, mystically, without the need for any church). Peter’s resurrection in the film is an endurance feat only, patterned after Houdini, while Simon’s magic is real, born of pagan earth and nature. Like Mary Magdalene, Jeanne becomes the first, the favorite, and a woman no less, to see the savior return. Since Simon rescued Jeanne from a metaphorical stoning at the film’s start, their strange relationship parallels the mysteries of Jesus and Mary (though scholarship reveals that the prostitute was probably not the same Mary as Magdalene, and the church has simply enjoyed marginalizing a wise seeker who would’ve become the Gnostic thirteenth apostle). Other incidents also revise the Simon legend to align him more with the true Christ, such as when it is the police who pay Simon for knowledge and not the other way around. The Holy Spirit thus purchased comes through sunlight and a plant, which is surely more reference to pagan Gnostism (obsessing over whether a love of nature is sinful or holy is a generally Gnostic concern).
The film may suffer a bit from a lack of clarity in its hugely symbolic material, but the director’s intentions to elevate the mystical views of life cannot be doubted, as she was celebrated for her debut in the sprawling dream logic of "My 20th Century" (1989), and is less known for the fantastical time-travelling meditations on a Virgin Mary figure who also helps a policeman in the gorgeous "Magic Hunter" (1994). The director must be well tuned into the zeitgeist which called for a re-evaluation of the Gnostic legend of Simon, since the same year saw another "Simon Magus" (1999) film from another esoteric indie director, the British Ben Hopkins. "Simon the Magician" is dir./writer Ildiko Enyedi, stars Peter Andorai (Simon), Julie Delarme (Jeanne), Peter Halasz (Peter), Hubert Kounde (Paul), Mari Nagy (Interpreter), aka "Simon Magus". For an older Hollywood vision of the Simon character, check out the cheesy "The Silver Chalice" (1954)

The film is the filmed version of Pál Závada's novel of the same title, which was first published in 1997 and soon became a bestseller. The story takes place during World War I and afterwards in a small town in south-eastern Hungary. It tells about the unhappy marriage between a young man, Ondris, who is a member of the Slovak minority of the town, and his wife Jadviga. She can't return his devotion towards her and starts a love affair with Franci, a lawyer. The film tells the history of this unhappy relationship between a passionate country man and his equally passionate, but much more erudite wife who wants something more from life but can't get it. There is also some historic background: the breakup of the Hapsburg monarchy, the independence movement of the Hungarian Slovaks, led in the story by a ridiculous priest, etc. But this only remains the backdrop for the story of an unhappy "ménage à trois".

Music Box (1989) - Costa Gavras

DVDRip DIVX

Runtime:124 min
Country:USA
Language:English Hungarian
Color:Color

Description:Hungarian immigrant Mike Laszlo has done well for himself since arriving in the USA nearly 50 years ago. He is particularly proud of his daughter, Ann, a successful lawyer. Following the release of some secret WWII records by the Russians, Mike finds himself accused of being a notorious war criminal. He's convinced it's a communist plot to discredit him and insists that Ann defend him in court. The courtroom scenes and dialogues are truly remarkable in their restraint, and give the viewer just enough background as is needed about the atrocities of Arrow Cross in Hungary between 1944 and 1945. Specially the testimony of one Mr. Bodai is awesome, that of man so much ravaged by horror that his delivery is almost a monotone, with little emotional difference between responding a "yes" and a "no".But it is Jessica Lange that outshines everyone else in performance, may be one of her best ever.

A Londoni férfi (The Man from London) (2007) - Béla Tarr

One night Maloin, a switchman at a seaside railway station situated by a ferry harbour, witnesses a terrible event. He is just watching the arrival of the last ferry at night from his control room on top of a high iron traverse from where he can see the whole bay. Suddenly he notices that the first of the disembarking passengers, a tall thin figure (a certain Brown as it will turn out later) leaves the harbour, but not on the usual route: after getting through customs, he goes around the dock and then withdraws into a dark corner, waiting. Opposite him, in front of the ship, another man soon appears and throws a suitcase towards the man on the shore. He goes and picks it up, then waits in an even darker corner for the other man to join him. When he arrives, however, they begin to quarrel and finally, in the course of the vehement fight, due to a hit that turns out to be fatal, the shorter one falls in the water and sinks, clutching the suitcase in his hand. Maloin is watching the scene, astonished. Finally, in a state of fear and shock, he opens the door of his control room, but the sharp and loud creaking sound disturbs and frightens away the murderer. Brown is forced to flee before being able to fish out the suitcase from the water. After the murderer disappears down one of the streets behind the harbour, Maloin cautiously climbs down from his cabin to the shore. When he realises that there is nothing he can do for the victim, he dredges up the suitcase. He takes it up to his control room and opens it: it is packed with money. He is dazzled. He does not go either to call the police or fetch the murderer; he just stares at the pile of money. He simply cannot believe his eyes. Then, after meticulously drying and counting the banknotes, he hides the suitcase in his closet and locks it. At dawn, when his colleague arrives, he acts as if nothing had happened. He returns home on his usual route. Nevertheless, this path is not the same anymore;

Latcho Drom (Safe Journey ) (1993) - Tony Gatlif

The film takes the viewer on a journey west, from India to Spain, with stops along the way, to dramatize Romany's nomadic culture. This journey takes place over a year's time, from summer through fall and winter to spring. Gatlif holds his camera on the elemental essentials of this life: water, the wheel, fire, beasts of burden and of sustenance, colorful clothes, jewelry, musical instruments, song, and dance. Throughout, via song and dance, young and old celebrate, embody, and teach the cultural values of family, journey, love, separateness, and persecution.

Szabadgyalog (The Outsider) (1981) - Béla Tarr

Self-absorbed and aimless, Andras lacks direction and purpose in his life. He quits his job at a nursing home to drift into a factory job; then he marries a woman he does not really love, though he has fathered a child by another. His only escape is through music, dancing, and drinking at the local tavern. Shot mostly in close-ups, the film instantly communicates a world of limited options and few opportunities. It captures the drama of modern life as it is lived, resulting in a moody and thought-provoking experience

Panelkapcsolat (The Prefab People) (1982) - Béla Tarr,

Suffering from economic hardships that slowly rip apart their once harmonious relationship, a married couple (Judit Pogany and Robert Koltai) struggle to keep everything together -- yet the husband becomes increasingly passive and the wife increasingly strident as time goes by. Their difficulties are created and portrayed by the spontaneous reactions of the actors themselves, following outlines of the story rather than the memorized lines of a scripted scenario. With minimal editing and direct sound that includes the noise of the camera, the black-and-white realism is rather bleak, reflecting the current state of their once caring relationship.Backtracking through their lives, Tarr illustrates how this couple have reached this point in their lives, and also why they are so argumentative and abusive towards each other. As usual, Tarr doesn't flinch from showing the raw emotion and unparalleled depression that beset many of his fellow countrymen during the 1980s, making this another worthy entry into his canon of films.
