Plot
The film takes place in contemporary Agra, India. Sita (Nandita Das), is frustrated with her marriage which was arranged by her parents. Her husband, Jatin (Javed Jaffrey) is also frustrated since he is in love with another woman who does not wish to marry him. He neglects Sita and is unfaithful to her.

The story revolves around Sita's life within Jatin's extended family, and her friendship with Radha (Shabana Azmi), who is married to Jatin's brother Ashok (Kulbhushan Kharbanda). Ashok is equally unhappy with his marriage as Radha is unable to have children. Ashok then decides to embrace the life of an ascetic, so he refuses to have sexual contact with Radha. Feeling abandoned within this family structure, Sita and Radha turn to each other for love and affection, forcing them to leave the family.

India - a Nation obsessed with cricket - and it is not very often one comes across anyone who loathes cricket as much as farmer Anwar Khan, who feels that it is a waste of time watching some grown men playing, not only getting paid, but costing the nation millions of lost work hours. His family, especially his wife, Saida, does not quite agree with him. As a matter of fact, she broke water when watching a cricket match with a TV set perched on a branch of a tree with almost the entire village in attendance. This is how Iqbal was born, followed by the birth of his sister, Khadija. Iqbal, though deaf and dumb, shared his mother's and sister's passion for cricket, he would tend to the buffaloes, who though all female, had been named after male cricketers, including Kapil Dev. While tending to them, he would stop and watch youngsters being trained by the renowned Guruji. When Guruji finds out about Iqbal's interest in the game, he recruits him, but lets him go when a dispute flares up between his top pupil, Kamal, and Iqbal. A disheartened Iqbal finds a new mentor, in the form of alcoholic farmhand, Mohit, who reluctantly decides to tutor Iqbal, so much so that Iqbal qualifies to play in the Andhra Pradesh team for a Ranjee trophy match. The match is won, and a way is cleared for Iqbal to find a place in the Indian team. Then all chaos breaks lose when Anwar refuses to let Iqbal indulge anymore in this waste of time, and asks him to go to the farm and help him. But Mohit is able to convince him to change his mind, only to find out that Guruji, who favors his star pupil Kamal, for a place in the Indian cricket team, and will do his utmost to foil any attempt by Mohit to promote Iqbal

Anwar (2007) - Manish Jha

Anwar is a Muslim who lives a middle-class lifestyle in Lucknow, India, along with his mom, brother, and Bhabhi, Suraiya. Anwar is doing a research on ancient Hindu Mandirs. They rent out a room to a poor widow and her attractive daughter, Mehru. Anwar falls in love with her. Anwar is certain of Mehru's love for him, but is shocked when he finds out that she has eloped with Udit, his Hindu friend, who is about to immigrate to America. He informs her mother, who in turn calls upon her nephew and other kith and kin, to locate Mehru. They do locate the couple abroad a bus, Udit is killed, while Mehru is beaten and ultimately hangs herself. A guilt-ridden Anwar takes shelter in an ancient Mandit in Dholpur and his bag, which contained drawings of Mandirs and notes on 'Lord Krishna', 'Devi Maa Meera', and 'Mehru'. This bag ends up with the Police and they believe that Anwar is a terrorist who is planning to detonate bombs in sacred Hindu temples. The place is surrounded by Police, politicians who are anxious to win the Hindu vote, the media, and a huge crowd who are here to see the show. Anwar contemplates his life and gets visits from 3 people. The first is an extremist Imam, who tells him to kill himself rather than surrender; the second is Police Superintendent Ashok Tiwari, who wants him to surrender quickly so that he can be with his ailing wife and young daughter; and the third is media-person, Anita, who wants a live interview so that she can establish her credibility with her boss. Set amongst post 9-11 scenario, amidst the craze for Valentine's day, Britney Spears, Osama Bin Laden, George W. Bush, and the American way of life, Anwar must now examine his options - the question is what will he ultimately decide?

IMDB comment: This isn't your typical Indian film when a girl and a boy fall in love through a series of songs, and the parents forbid it until during a teary dramatic speech they accept the fact they belong together, no. This story ventures out of the lives of certain people, of what would really happen not only the imagination of the producers or directors. I, myself am not a Bollywood fan because of its excess of love films, but this film was different, I'm sure anyone would love it. It makes you cry, smile, laugh, and surprised about the outcomes. Some of the actresses and actors who lost their popularity in the film businesses are sure to regain it after lots view this film. The music matched perfectly with this movie, it's melody was sweet and beautiful. I recommend everyone to see this!

The film explores a futuristic rural India wherein due to rampant female infanticide, women are practically extinct. The impact of the absence of women on men sees them finding alternative sources of release - pornography, homosexuality, bestiality, violence, the works. When a girl, Kalki (Tulip Joshi) is actually spied, she is promptly sold and married to five brothers. All five - and the father-in-law-exercise their conjugal rights in turn. She starts getting closer to the youngest brother (Sushant Singh), the only one who treats her like a human being, much to the chagrin of the father and other brothers.

Description:

Meenakshi Iyer comes from a devout Hindu Brahmin family, purely vegetarian, who not only abstain from meat, but also food from restaurants, is the only child, married to Subramaniam Iyer from Tamil Nadu, has just given birth to a young son, Santhanam, and is visiting her mom. It is then they receive news that her mother-in-law is ill and wants Meenakshi back home in Calcutta. The parents arrange to drop her and her son off at the bus-stand, where they are introduced to a young photographer named Raja Chowdhury. Meenakshi's parents ask Raja to look after her, to which he agrees. The bus starts off, taking it's passengers through scenic hillside. The bus driver comes across a sign that the regular road is closed and he decides to take another route. After a few hours the bus comes to a stop as there is a line-up of vehicles ahead. The passengers are told that there has been a terrorist attack on a train resulting in the death of about 200 people. The region, predominately Hindu, believe that the attack was carried out by Muslims and there is retaliation by Hindu extremists. Curfew has to be imposed by the police to prevent further riots and casualties. It is then that a Police Jeep containing Police Officer Raj Arora drives by, asking all passengers to board their respective vehicles, as the area is under curfew. The passengers comply, shut the door, and wait for the traffic to clear. It is now dark and the silence is broken by men with fire-lit torches asking the driver to open the door of the bus, which he does. A group of extremists ask the passengers to identify themselves, and prove to them that they are Hindus, some have to take their pants off. Meenakshi identifies Raja as her husband, Mani. A Jew loudly claims that there are only two Muslims and points to Iqbal Ahmed Khan and his wife Najma. Iqbal is taken off the bus, a visibly upset Najma follows him, and they are killed. It is then the truth unfolds that Raja is not the young man's name but he is Jehangir - a Muslim. An upset Meenakshi must now come to terms with her Brahmin background, which prevents her from coming into contact, drinking water, sharing food, with even a non-Brahmin, leave alone a Muslim, especially now that she has identified him as her "husband" to protect him from being killed. The question remains will this "marriage" last or will Jehangir be discovered before they reach Calcutta.

An Incredible Masterpiece

There are films which we see by accident and which we won't never forget. One of these films is Aparna Sens MR. AND MRS.IYER by one of the greatest Indian women filmmakers. At the first sight I wasn't sure at all, especially at the beginning (a collage of news on different cases of political violence). But some minutes later at the first part of the film - a forty minutes long bus travel through an incredible beautiful landscape, Aparna Sen proofs her cinematic brilliance. It is not only like she says the "little India" including a Jew, Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims - but as well a masterfully play with time. All persons are connected with each other like musical themes. I just want to mention one little moment which demonstrates Sens sensibility. There is the young Tamil mother ( played by Konkona Sen Sharma) who is a bit troubled by her baby. Behind her there is a young probably fresh married couple kissing each other hidden under a blanket. One glance of her to them tells everything about her longings and not fulfilled dreams, the dream of a young woman who never have lived romantic love. The other one is when a young girl plays on her guitar a song which is about "Don't say a word". There is an old Muslim who complaint about the noisy young people before, but when his old wife is talking to him, he answered, he repeats almost like singing and probably in a very dreamy mood the same text of the young girl's song. In all respect, these two moments have the quality of the interactions between people in the films of Americas greatest film director John Ford or the genius of Japanese cinema Yasujiro Ozu. It is cinematic poetry in its purest form. And that are only a few moments from this outstanding masterpiece. In the last years, MR. AND MRS. IYER is with a recent masterpiece AMU by Shonali Bose one of the greatest films in the last years - and not only in India. And Aparna Sens masterpiece belongs to the great Road Movies in the history of cinema and evokes in the first third of the film another masterpiece of the Road movies called MR. THANK YOU by Hiroshi Shimizu. Beside all that this film is shot in wonderful images and extremely well played by Konkona Sen Sharma (one of the finest young actresses in international cinema) and by Rahul Bose as the liberal open-minded Muslim Raja. Almost all other characters you can't forget. Off-course this film deals with violence motivated by religious fanaticism and intolerance. But Sen needs only a few moments of violence to show that. Beside this signs of a very violent world, Sen put against some beautiful moments which I would like to call the cinematic idea of paradise. And indeed- this films belongs to my personal paradises of cinema - together with Ozus EARLY SUMMER, Dang Nhat Minhs.

"Ardh Satya" is one of the finest film ever made in Indian Cinema. Directed by the great director Govind Nihalani, this one is the most successful Hard Hitting Parallel Cinema which also turned out to be a Commercial Success. The film tells the Real-life Scenario of Mumbai Police of the 70s. Unlike any Police of other cities in India, Mumbai Police encompasses a Different system altogether. Govind Nihalani creates a very practical Outlay with real life approach of Mumbai Police Environment.

Amongst various Police officers & colleagues, the film describes the story of Anand Velankar, a young hot-blooded Cop coming from a poor family. His father is a harsh Police Constable. Anand himself suffers from his father's ideologies & incidences of his father's Atrocities on his mother. Anand's approach towards immediate action against crime, is an inert craving for his own Job satisfaction. The film is here revolved in a Plot wherein Anand's constant efforts against crime are trampled by his seniors.This leads to frustrations, as he cannot achieve the desired Job-satisfaction. Resulting from the frustrations, his anger is expressed in excessive violence in the remand rooms & bars, also turning him to an alcoholic.

The Spirit within him is still alive, as he constantly fights the system. He is aware of the system of the Metro, where the Police & Politicians are a inertly associated by far end. His compromise towards unethical practice is negative. Finally he gets suspended.

The Direction is a master piece & thoroughly hard core. One of the best memorable scenes is when Anand breaks in the Underworld gangster Rama Shetty's house to arrest him, followed by short conversation which is fantastic. At many scenes, the film has Hair-raising moments.

The Practical approach of Script is a major Punch. Alcoholism, Corruption, Political Influence, Courage, Deceptions all are integral part of Mumbai police even today. Those aspects are dealt brilliantly. - IMDB Comment
