Lásky jedné plavovlásky (A Blonde in Love) (1965) - Miloš Forman

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059415/

A filandering young jazz player struggles to and finally seduces a simple factory girl for a one night stand; some time later, she comes to the capital of Prague in search of her lover but finds his bewildered parents. His mom rather rude, his dad confused and somewhat bashful...still they let her crash in (a small town girl in a big town like that!) until the beloved brat returns home from another of his nightly gigs...A funny film in that central European melancholy way, but warm and gut pinching for all those's who grew up in these times and longitudes. The atmosphere of a provincial Eastern European town on a Saturday night with an amateur jazz band playing, a trio of goofy military reservists having a night out and hoping to score with a local factory girl or two. Real life takes precedent over ideology: this indeed is 1965, it could have been Poland, Hungary even Yugoslavia (here it's the Checho-Slovakia: great beer, ice hockey and hearty dosage of sexuality)

Marketa Lazarová (1967) - František Vlácil

1461.3 MB | 2:38:43 | Czech with English s/t | XviD, 1050 Kb/s | 640x272

Voted the best Czech film ever made, Marketa Lazarová is a powerful and passionate medieval epic set in the mid-13th Century. Based on avant-garde writer Vladislav Vancura’s novel, it follows the rivalry between two warring clans, the Kozlíks and the Lazars, and the doomed love affair of Mikoláš Kozlík and Marketa Lazarová. Re-creating an authentic world and as reminiscent of Tarkovsky and Kurosawa as it is of the rich tapestry of Czech fiction, this ambitious and multi-layered film is the crowning achievement of Vlácil’s career and one of the undiscovered cornerstones of world cinema. This is the first-ever DVD release of Marketa Lazarová anywhere in the world. Second Run
Image
Image
In a survey of Czech film critics held in 1998, Marketa Lazarová was voted the best Czech film ever made. In the same year its director, František Vlácil, received a lifetime achievement award at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival. It therefore comes as something of a surprise that neither the film nor its director feature prominently in general histories of the cinema. Second Run
Image
František Vlácil (1924-99) was not a member of the famous Czech New Wave of the 1960s, nor a product of the Prague Film School (FAMU). He originally studied art and aesthetics in Brno before working in both puppet and documentary film. This was followed by a stint in the Czech Army Film Unit, where he made over 30 instructional films and documentaries. He first attracted international attention with his poetic documentary, Sklenená oblaka (Glass Skies, 1957), which was awarded a prize at the Venice Film Festival. His fiction debut, Pronásledování (Pursuit aka Persecution), was part of a two episode feature, Vstup zakázán (No Admittance, 1959). It was followed a year later by his feature debut, Holubice (The White Dove, 1960), which won further awards at Venice, for Vlácil and his cinematographer, Jan Curík. Second Run
Image
With Marketa Lazarová, Vlácil approached a novel by Vladislav Vancura, which was first published in 1931. Vancura, one of the leading Czech novelists, was a member of most of the experimental art movements of the period and was the first chair of the avant garde Devetsil group. He was also a prolific author of (unfilmed) screenplays, and had directed or co-directed five feature films in the 1930s. In his film work, he aimed to take cinema in new formal directions, experimenting with both sound and montage in such films as Na slunecní strane (On the Sunnyside, 1933) and Marijka nevernice (Faithless Marijka, 1934), the last of which featured acclaimed composer Bohuslav Martinu’s only film score. Vancura’s novels emphasised the poetic and experimental use of language. As a result, it presented obvious problems for film adaptation, although Jirí Menzel successfully brought two of Vancura’s other novels to the screen as comedies: Rozmarné léto (Capricious Summer, 1967) and Konec starych casu (The End of Old Times, 1989). Second Run

Image
While Marketa Lazarová was inspired by Vancura’s novel, it remains very different. A short text has been converted into a vast epic that bears comparison, in different ways with each, to Kurosawa’s Shichinin no Samurai (Seven Samurai, 1954) and Tarkovsky’s Andrei Roublëv (1966). It was also inspired by motifs from Vancura’s Obrazy z dejin národa ceského (Pictures from the History of the Czech Nation, 1939-40). And if Vancura’s original novel provided no historical clues and was designed to be autonomous, Vlácil’s film was set very specifically in the mid-13th century, a time he attempted to evoke with the utmost accuracy. Second Run
Image
Mikolás (Frantisek Velecky) and his brother Adam (Ivan Palúch) rob travellers for their tyrranical father Kozlík (Josef Kemr). During one of their "jobs" they end up with a young German hostage whose father escapes to return news of the kidnapping and robbery to the King. Kozlik prepares for the wrath of the King, and sends Mikolás to pressure his neighbour Lazar (Michal Kozuch) to join him in war. Persuasion fails, and in vengeance Mikolás abducts Lazar's daughter Marketa (Magda Vásáryová), just as she was about to join a convent. The King, meantime, dispatches an army and the religious Lazar will be called upon to join hands against Kozlik. Stripped-down, surreal, and relentlessly grimy account of the shift from Paganism to Christianity.

Spalovac mrtvol | The Cremator (Full DVD (1968) - Juraj Herz

This film of Juraj Herj, like Morgiana, has a decidedly gothic feel. Karl Kopfrkingl, the owner of a modern crematorium gets creepier by the minute. At the beginning of the film at a family outing we see a snow leopard, peacock, tiger, snake, and a lion - Karl makes a comment that "cages are for mute persons." Later at a fair everyone else seems to be having a wonderful time; Karl looks quite glum. But when they enter a "chamber of horrors" exhibit, he's quite happy and intrigued while everyone else is shocked (it reminds me of one of Charles Addams' cartoons with everyone in a movie theatre crying, except for one man who seems positively overjoyed by the cinema situation.

In a sense, Karl lives for dying - or at least lives to compassionately cremate as many people as he can, releasing and purifying their souls for another life. He seems to have a bit of an obsession with Tibetan Buddhism, carrying with him a tome on the Dalia Lama's palace and Buddhist customs.

Description:
March 15, 1939: Germany invades Czechoslovakia. Czech pilots flee to England, joining the RAF. After the war, back home, they are put in labor camps, suspected of anti-Communist ideas. This film cuts between a post-war camp where Franta is a prisoner and England during the war, where Franta is like a big brother to Karel, a very young pilot. On maneuvers, Karel crash lands by the rural home of Susan, an English woman whose husband is MIA. She spends one night with Karel, and he thinks he's found the love of his life. It's complicated by Susan's attraction to Franta. How will the three handle innocence, Eros, friendship, and the heat of battle? When war ends, what then?

Young Czech helmer Jan Sverak's distinctive gift, shown in "Kolya," for juggling Bohemian charm with deep-rooted emotion succeeds on the much larger stage of "Dark Blue World," thanks to another well-textured script by his father, Zdenek Sverak, and performances which play to the front row rather than the gallery. An intimate dramedy of two Czech pilots in Britain's Royal Air Force who fall for the same woman during WWII, pic is full of engaging characters and big-heartedness beneath the aerial dogfights and more serious message of what Communism later did to these heroes. Strikingly shot in widescreen, this quality mainstream entertainment lacks the simplicity and cuteness that made the Academy Award-winning "Kolya" such an international success, but with the right positioning and marketing could fly reasonably high beyond home turf, especially in Europe. Pic opened in Prague May 16 and is being touted for a North American preem at the Toronto fest this fall.

From "Wings" to "The Right Stuff," the Deep Blue Yonder has provided a favorite arena in the movies for characters to work out their terrestrial conflicts and personal aspirations. "Dark Blue World" takes the idea one step further by framing the wartime drama as a series of memory flashbacks from the dark, early days of Czech communism in 1950. As Lt. Franta Slama (Ondrej Vetchy) recuperates in the grim hospital of Mirov Prison, packed with political prisoners, he recalls the heady, final days of freedom just prior to the German invasion of Czechoslovakia in '39.

Franta was then a carefree flyer at Olomouc Airfield, with a young rookie pilot, Karel (Krystof Hadek), assigned to his care. On the day German troops march into the country, Franta is more interested in getting it on with a cute blonde who's promised to the local stationmaster.

When German troops commandeer the airfield, Franta quietly knuckles down to working under his new overlords, but soon he and Karel set about escaping to freedom. Pic rapidly switches to a rural training center in England, 1940, where the duo and other Czechs stumble through language lessons, partake in strategy exercises on bicycles equipped with wings, and generally hang out together as they await the call to action. Among their group are a piano-playing lothario, Machaty (Oldrich Kaiser), a gross Moravian, Sysel, and a kid with a perpetual stammer.

Played in a naturalistic manner by the main cast, with dialogue realistically sliding between Czech and English, these scenes establish an easy friendship born of a common background that's been uprooted and planted in a foreign land. The elder Sverak's strong script is very even-handed here, with the Czechs as well as the Brits coming in for good-natured ribbing.

A half-hour into the pic, the action gets under way, with a dogfight vs. some German planes that leads to an immediate casualty in the group. (Pic isn't soft-centered in suddenly dispatching its characters.) In tandem with Ondrej Soukup's broad, aspirational score, these aerial sequences pack as big a punch as anything in larger-budgeted productions. Helmer never allows the f/x to take precedence over the personalities involved -- even finding time for shafts of humor between the drama -- and, more than in any other movie, conveys the visceral feel of being peppered with gunfire while cooped up in a claustrophobic cockpit.

After such lengthy preparation, the human conflict clicks into gear when Karel, shot down over England, stumbles onto the rural home of Susan (Tara Fitzgerald), wife of an absent sailor. Their brief encounter, and her much longer one with the older Franta, tests the friendship between the lovestruck kid and his superior officer, as the pair's fates become entwined in later missions.

Sverak's sheer technical finesse, and ability to spin on a dime between comedy and tragedy, the personal and the historical, makes "Deep Blue World" succeed where other similarly themed movies, from "Battle of Britain" to "The Blue Max," seem heavy-handed by comparison. Although the script further ups the stakes by moving backwards and forwards between the '50s and '40s, the movie has a seamless emotional line that doesn't make the time shifts annoying.

Taking a typically Czech approach in which all characters are shown to be complicit in each other's fates, and made up of equal parts good and bad, even supporting roles -- such as a former Nazi doctor (Hans-Jorg Assmann) in the Czech prison -- emerge as damaged but essentially sympathetic goods. In a good example of the script's pungent economy, the doc inspects one prisoner's wounds after an interrogation and murmurs, "Nazis, Communists ... the blows are the same."

Pic's neatly worked out final reels, which go for a prolonged shrug of the shoulders rather than physical confrontations, are extremely moving.

The heart and soul of the movie resides in the perf of the experienced Vetchy (the gravedigger in "Kolya"), whose easygoing, twinkly-eyed charm avoids any one-dimensional macho posturing. In a relatively small role, Fitzgerald radiates a mature, no-nonsense presence as the lonesome wife, meshing easily with her Czech co-stars, and newcomer Hadek is restrained in the potentially sulky part of Karel. Among the strong supports, Kaiser shines as Machaty, a cynical, seen-it-all womanizer with a melancholic center.

Almost entirely shot in the Czech Republic, apart from some sea scenes done in South Africa and some pickup shots of the White Cliffs of Dover, the movie features a couple of rather un-English landscapes but is generally well fabricated, with a lived-in look to Jan Vlasak's production design and Vera Mirova's costumes. Though much is packed into the running time, there's little sense of dramatic overcrowding, thanks to Sverak's skill at transitions.

A final historical note says all the pilots were finally released from prison in '51, but were only fully rehabilitated 40 years later.

Neco z Alenky (Alice) (1988) - Jan Svankmajer

Rating: 7.6/10
Runtime: 94*
Language: English
Country: Czechoslovakia
Color: Colour
IMDb Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095715/

This adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland mixes animation and live action to create a dreamlike world, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's simply a kid's film. Young Alice (Kristyna Kohoutová, spoken by Camilla Power) watches a stuffed and mounted rabbit come to life in her playroom and follows it through a magical drawer into a strange world that resembles a 19th-century toy store come to life, with a few specimens from a natural history museum thrown in. Czech animator Jan Svankmajer retains the familiar story elements but tweaks them with bizarre imagery brought to herky-jerky life with his spasmodic style of stop-motion animation. The caterpillar becomes a sock puppet with dentures, while other crazy creatures materialise as creepy skull-headed beings that bleed sawdust. Throughout the tale Svankmajer returns to punctuating close-ups of Alice's lips telling the story, just to remind us that this is a tale told. In the best surrealist tradition Svankmajer uses familiar objects in unfamiliar ways, giving a fantasy quality to the banal (and the not so banal) while tipping the dream logic to the edge of nightmare. While the imagery remains more unsettling than genuinely disturbing, younger children will certainly be happier with Disney's brightly coloured animated classic Alice in Wonderland. Older children and adults will better appreciate Svankmajer's sly visual wit and unusual animation style.

Ostre sledované vlaky ( Closely Watched Trains) (1966) - Jirí Menzel's

Runtime:
93 min
Country:
Czechoslovakia
Language:
Czech | German
Color:

Jiri Menzel's Closely Watched Trains, the winner the 1967 Oscar Award for Best Foreign-Language Picture, is a lyrical tragicomedy about the attempts of a naive apprentice train-dispatcher at sexual initiation. The (anti) hero of this wry yet tender Czech film is a shy, scared youngster who comes from a long line of patsies and fools.

The first film to be directed by Jiri Menzel is based on the well-known ironic novel by Bohumil Hrabal, who collaborated with Menzel on the scenario. Born in 1914, Hrabal, one of the most popular Czech writers, was older than Menzel by 24 years, but he reportedly liked the film better than his novel.

Set during the German Occupation, most of the narrative takes place at a village railway station. It's a modest sort of film that shows human concern and compassion for its characters, without judging them. A sophisticated, elliptical folk tale, Closely Watched Trains contains many quirky moments that reflect small-town passion. One sequence, in which an assistant stationmaster rubber-stamps a female telegrapher, is particularly funny.

Marking a turning point in history of Czech cinema, Closely Watched Trains could not have been made after the Soviet invasion of August 21, 1968, which ended the liberal climate that had prevailed in Czech arts and letters in the 1960s.

Menzel not only co-wrote and directed, but also played in the movie the pivotal role of the doctor. In l974, Menzel recanted his political beliefs, which enabled him to work, but he resumed his initial political activism in l989.

Among his other movies are: Capricious Summer (1968), Larks on a String (1969), Those Wonderful Men with a Crank (1978), and the international hit My Sweet Little Village (1986).
