Made when he was only 24, famed Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami's first feature is a remarkably self-assured debut. Its youthful protagonist, Qassem (Hassan Darabi), is a budding juvenile delinquent and devoted soccer fan who will do anything, including swindling his elementary school classmates and stealing from his parents, to travel the 400 hundred miles from his tiny village to Tehran so he can watch his favorite team play an important match. The Traveler makes plain that Kiarostami's genius for portraying the complex inner lives of children without resorting to excessive cuteness or cheap sentimentality was present at the beginning of his filmmaking career, and Darabi is an inspired choice as a lead actor. His sensitive eyes betray the tough exterior he displays in his hometown, and when he reaches Tehran, that toughness seems to melt into the natural curiosity of youth. Beautifully shot in black and white, The Traveler contains many of the seeds that would flower in later films like Through the Olive Trees and The Wind Will Carry Us.

The Taste of The Cherry is the story of the last day in the life of Mister Badii. He is going to Teheran, where he wants to find somebody to bury him, after he has killed himself. It is an easy job, just shovel some earth on him, and besides, it is well paid. First he wants to persuade a young soldier who does not say much, feels more and more uncomfortable and then runs away. The second man he talks to is a seminarist, who gives a lecture about suicide and guilt but does not help either. The third guy is an old teacher, who will do the job, but who tries to persuade Badii that it is not a good thing to do. Iranian filmmaker Jafar Pinahi's debut feature The White Balloon (writer: Abbas Kiarostami) tells the story of Razieh (Aida Mohammadkhani), a seven-year-old girl intent on buying a new goldfish in time for Tehran's annual New Year's Day festivities (in Iranian culture, the goldfish is a symbol of life). Upon badgering her mother into giving her a 500-toman banknote, Razieh heads off
to the marketplace alone; it is her first real experience away from her parents' watchful eyes, and the excitement and wonder she feels is palpable. Told in real time, the film's sensitive portrayal of Razieh's wide-eyed misadventures superbly conveys the impact which an otherwise unremarkable chain of events can indelibly leave upon the life of a child. Her struggle to prove her independence is dramatically undercut when she loses the banknote not once but twice, but her spirit and ingenuity nevertheless remain indefatigable.

Another short film produced by Kiarostami while heading the film department of the Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults. Punished for having smashed a window with his ball, a child has to stand in the school hallway. When school lets out, he heads home but finds his way blocked by a football game. He manages to get through, but then follows a bumpy road that takes him to the outskirts of the city.

Hamsarayan (The Chorus) - Abbas Kiarostami

A deaf old man wearing a hearing aid is walking in the streets of Rasht. When the surroundings get too noisy, he turns off his sound. Unfortunately, when he returns home, he doesn’t hear his granddaughter, home from school, vainly ringing the doorbell. A chorus of children gathers to penetrate the old man's silence.

This is one of Abbas Kiarostami's finest short works. With the minimum of elements and every pound of sensibility and grace he could afford, the Iranian master shot a precious and brief manifest of some things really worth in life. You can see Víctor Erice's "The spirit of the beehive" (1973) - shot ten year before, and surely well known by Kiarostami -and maybe some curious Raymond Depardon's children in between the warm frames of this tiny piece that everyone who wants to be a director must see. The metaphor is clear and simple: we need human "touch" to be human. Don't miss it and if you have the opportunity to see it, please recommend it. ( Author: postcefalu from Spain from IMDB)

The hot, dry, dusty wind clogging your face, the bitter brutal sun streaming down the faces and bodies of workers surrounding the digging, sifting, and moving of dirt, and the massive machines clanging in the back ground, create the visual focal point of the story. Life is what we're all a part of, whether good or bad, we must succeed in the most positive way we know how or it can take us over in grief and despair, as it has with one man. This man wants to rid himself of the world, but in a twist, he wants to make sure his body lays resting in a peaceful and good place. His journey has him searching for just that person who'll help him with his final plans.

Mr. Badii (Homayan Ershadi) is a man whose quest leads him to many revelations about people and life while in his search for someone to help properly assist him in his demise from the world. Mosafer (1974) - Abbas Kiarostami

Kiarostami's first feature (made some 15 years before he became the darling of the film festival circuit) tells the story of a troublesome, amoral 10 year old boy (Hassan Darabi), living in a small town in Iran, who wishes to go to Tehran to see Iran's national football team play an important match. To achieve that, he steals money from friends and neighbors through a series of scams. After a number of adventures, he finally reaches Tehran stadium at the time of the match, but there, and without giving totally away the ending, he ends up getting some sort of comeuppance (as usual by Kiarostami, there is a great final shot). One of the remarkable things of the movie is how driven is the boy in reaching his objective, never thinking how what he is doing will affect other people, even those that are closer to him. Also fascinating is the film look at Iranian football culture during the 70s (which wasn't very different to football culture in other countries at the time). Kiarostami has a very fine hand in telling a story sensitively, and he avoids the pretentiousness he showed in later films, after he has been acclaimed by European critics.

hrough the Olive Trees (Zire darakhatan zeyton) is a 1994 film directed and written by Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami, set in earthquake-ravaged Northern Iran.

It is the final part of Kiarostami's Earthquake Trilogy, and the plot revolves around the production of the second episode, Life, and Nothing More..., which itself was a revisitation of the first film, Where Is the Friend's Home?. Like many of Kiarostami's films, it is filmed in a simplistic, naturalistic way, while also being a complex study of the link between art and life, constantly blurring the boundaries between fiction and reality.
