Review:
The End of America details the ten steps a country takes when it slides toward fascism. It's not a "lefty"tot tome, rather a historical look at trends in once-functioning democracies from modern history that are being repeated in our country today. It gives any reader (or viewer of the lecture) a much-needed history lesson and constitutional refresher. Most importantly, it puts the recent gradual loss of civil liberties in the U.S. in a historical context. The average American might not be alarmed at AT&T selling our private information to the Bush administration, but when this action is seen as part of a larger series of erosions and events, a pattern emerges with unfortunate consequences that become disturbingly clear.

Naomi Wolf is a crack pot! She would say that because of Obama, we have regained our liberties taken by the Bush. But if Bush had taken over the car companies, banks and health care like Obama has, she would be calling Bush the greatest fascist since Benito Mussolini.
i find your comment to be just what she speaks about in the film, stifling dissent or twisting facts to suit an agenda.
she is not saying anything whatsoever about obama having reversed what bush and co. created which was a dismantling of our constitution and corporations gaining more power. (which you seem to agree with by way of your comment "we have regained our liberties".) she never once mentions anything at all relative to that. i do not recall obama even being mentioned in the entire film.
she is saying the american public needs to stand up and say we want our basic liberties and constitutional rights restored that were removed by the likes of the patriot act.
why do you feel that you have to misconstrue/misrepresent the intent of what she is saying? she is simply speaking her mind and stating facts about historical events. how you ever got any of that from this movie (if you watched it at all or read her book) is beyond me.
as the review above sites, it is an historical lecture on past and current events, and how similar they are.
Have you ever heard Wolf in a debate? In specific, a debate with someone who has counter beliefs? I give her admiration for at least debating with people who disagree. I never watch debates, but listen, so my eyes will not influence what is being said or how it is said. In my opinion, her 'beliefs' and 'opinions' never bear any resemblence to reality.
Wolf flourishes in the left's echo chamber. She is rarely embraced by any other groups because they don't value her accusations. One could now write the same book as she has replacing Obama's name everywhere Bush's name was and it would work. You could even make a greater case for fascism with the government now owning many large car companies, banks, lending institutions, credit bureaus and so on.
Wolf distrusts big business but embraces big government, but only when this government is controlled by the left. Sure she will come out now and again attacking leftist, but it will never show up on the Huffington Post. It ends up on the state controlled media of Russia Today.
The relationship between the state and the individual will never be understood by Wolf. The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen. This has been true since the beginning of governance. The problem with today's society is every time they ask for a restoration of liberties and freedoms, they ask expect those who only give a larger government to grant there wishes. Fascism has never come a government that is small, it only comes from governments who can't control their growth and need for power.
My personal problem with Wolf, besides her conflicting beliefs, it how she deals with the 'what if's' applied to reality. If given the chance to go back in time before 9/11 and be able to interrogate KSM and possibly stop 9/11, Afghanistan and possible Iraq wars from happening by waterboarding KSM, she would refuse. She would refuse based upon the belief that it is wrong to torture, even to save innocent lives. The military still uses waterboarding to this day to train their soldiers, but does she of the left try and end this practice? No!
I could go on and on, but at some point you have to agree to disagree. I will always pay close attention to the people who have a proctologist view of America, like the late Howard Zinn, and balance it out with the other side to gain a perspective on real history.

Hey, Andy, it doesn't sound like you watched the film, or read the book. You may think you don't need to, having listened to Wolf in TV debates, but if you had, you'd know that, regarding torture, she argues both that it doesn't work and is unconstitutional, in addition to it being morally unconscionable.
She censures Bush because his administration took numerous and significant steps to close down the open society and demonstrably undermined the US constitution. She doesn't mention Obama, of course, because both the book and the film were produced before he took office. Yet, her argument does conclude with the observation that once these steps to close down an open society have been taken, it has, historically, proved difficult to reverse them: the executive is always disinclined to relinquish power.
(She doesn't address 'big government' because it is neither a significant step in closing down an open society, nor is it unconstitutional. Ditto, federal income tax.)
JayVee, I will not support contribute to her in anyway. I have listened to her too many times to remember. None of the debates I have heard from her were ever on TV. CSPAN and the other news networks rarely put on debates that are worth watching. I have listened to her on radio debates and debates that were organized by groups that later podcast the event.
Yes I know she is against torture. That is why I wrote that given the chance to stop an act of terrorism by waterboarding that would save thousands or millions of lives, she would sacrifice the innocent. Furthermore, since she believes that waterboarding is torture, why does she not campaign our government from using it on soldiers during training?
As far as coming out with an addendum to her book covering Obama's so called slide towards fascism, she won't. Right now, Obama has failed on almost every promise he made in putting an end to practices of the Bush administration. So much for that hope and change.
I don't want to make too large of an assumption of your statement, "'big government' because it is neither a significant step in closing down an open society,". I assume you are in your 20's. Need I say more? At that age, I thought I had a grasp of history too. Than I met some incredible people who either directly of had family members who survived concentration camps, gulags, killing fields, cultural revolutions, Islamic revolutions and more. Every one of the had one thing in common, a big government that wanted to control every action of the individual. These people changed my outlook on history that were incorrectly told by my professors.
As far as a big government being unconstitutional, I never even implied that.
As this is a post about the film 'End of America' and you clearly haven't seen the film, there is nothing more to be said here.
i agree with JayVee. you have not a leg to stand on given you have seemingly not read the book or seen the film. and i for one find your reference to waterboarding our own mis-guided too. yes, they train our troops to undergo this because it is a tactic that others have use against us. not because it is a good thing or more importantly that it works and gets results. if you had watched the film you would see intelligence and military individuals who will attest to the fact that information gained under such torture is useless and serves no purpose and worst of all only gets the result sought, not the truth.
i will also state that i am 57, no need for you to assume i am too young to understand, and i was taught by my post world war 2 parents the lessons of the concentration camps of their era which were a result, if you had watched the film you would see, of the things she speaks of and points out as historical fact.
if you had watched the film, and done so with an open mind, what would you have to say about all the historical references she makes use of to show how it was the bush administration that led us down this path, and she makes no mention of obama. this is not a film about obama in any respect. it has no bearing on a discussion about the film or the book.
but since you mention it, the things that have taken place under obama are a result of having to repair the disaster of an economy that was created during 8 years under bush. if you will recall, after clinton we had no debt and were doing quite well in that respect.
so i ask you as one example, is the department of homeland security an exercise in increasing government or downsizing government? and then an even more important question, has it helped to serve a purpose, does it work? if you take the katrina disaster as an example of the HS dept and its ability to function, the answer is a resounding no. another bush fiasco.
people like yourself always talk about big and small government, yet you refuse to see how bush was responsible for something you continue to nonsensically rail against. an increase in government.
also, from what i have read, there would have been no need to waterboard anyone if the bushies had simply read the daily status reports given to them, been vigilant, and not gone on vacation all summer to bike ride and cut brush.
the bottom line is that this film is basically a lesson, or recanting of history. that is all. something that can not be denied. it is a fim about the history of foreign oppressive governments that came before our time, the bushies, and the record of their constitutional abuses that we must now suffer as a result of bush emulating them.
so, Andy from Beaverton, one last question. when you are at the age of retirement will you collect your social security or will you leave it? after all, it is a "socialist" program and we would not want you to participate in such an un-American thing.
