Brute Force (1947) - Jules Dassin

BRUTE FORCE This intense, powerful drama stars Burt Lancaster as Collins, a prisoner who's got to find a way out, and Hume Cronyn as the sadistic Captain Munsey, who delights in torturing the inmates. Cronyn is masterful -- cast wonderfully out of character, his slick, soft delivery takes on a skin-crawling menace. Lancaster is appropriately hard and driven, but the fact that he's breaking out to be by his dying girlfriend's side seems facile. The weakest elements of this film are the flashbacks to how his cellmates got locked up. (It seems obvious these scenes are contrived to introduce women into an otherwise all-male cast.) It turns out none of them are really bad guys except Lancaster, who appears to be some kind of gangster. We aren't given much insight into his character; we know he's smart and a leader, but he's clearly got a tendency toward violence. Ultimately, however, it's not about how they got there, but who they are when they get there. It's about what pushes a man past his breaking point and what happens after that. Weaknesses aside, this is a worthwhile, thought-provoking film with excellent performances all around.

Shortly after arriving in a new lakeside house in Vermont that once belonged to Norman's scientist father, her daughter Caitlin leaves home to go away to college. One day when Claire is working in the garden she hears loud sobbing coming from over the fence. It turns out to be her neighbor, Mary Feur (Miranda Otto). She seems terrified and Claire is very concerned, thinking that her husband is beating her. Norman tells her not to worry. Claire wakes in the middle of the night, and looks out of the window. She sees Mary's husband Warren (James Remar) dragging what looks like a body bag out into the boot of his car. By the time Claire had woken Norman, there was nothing left to see.

Synecdoche New York (2008) - Charlie Kaufman

The story is that all of a sudden trucks "come to life" in a town called Lunar and want to kill all humans. Lunar is a small town where Ray (Timothy Busfield) comes to live with his son Logan (Brandon Fletcher) after his wife has been brutally murdered in a drive by shooting in Detroit. Ray thought that Lunar would be a safe place for his son to grow up. Hope (Brenda Bakke) also came back to Lunar after going through a nasty divorce. She owns a small hiking tour company which is where the rest of the cast comes from - save a couple of red necked truck drivers (Aidan Devine and Rick Skene) and one ex-military cook (Victor Cowie).

The title of this documentary on Rainer Maria Fassbinder is just slightly changed from the title of a film that director made in 1976, entitled "Ich Will Doch Nur, Dass Ihr Mich Liebt" (I Only Want You to Love Me). The Wunderkind of postwar German filmmaking died at age 36, in 1982, after making over 50 films in his short fifteen year career. He tended to produce resolutely experimental films using members of his theatrical troupe, the "Anti-Theater." Hanna Schygulla, frequently the female lead in his films, speaks about the man and his character as a director, as do others who were members of his extended filmmaking family. This is the first attempt to produce a documentary of the audacious, controversial director since his death.

Dead Man (1995) - Jim Jarmusch

Dead Man is the story of a young man's journey, both physically and spiritually, into very unfamiliar terrain. William Blake travels to the extreme western frontiers of America sometime in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Lost and badly wounded, he encounters a very odd, outcast Native American, named "Nobody," who believes Blake is actually the dead English poet of the same name. The story, with Nobody's help, leads William Blake through situations that are in turn comical and violent. Contrary to his nature, circumstances transform Blake into a hunted outlaw, a killer, and a man whose physical existence is slowly slipping away. Thrown into a world that is cruel and chaotic, his eyes are opened to the fragility that defines the realm of the living. It is as though he passes through the surface of a mirror, and emerges into a previously-unknown world that exists on the other side.

In the Pacific Northwest wilderness, two hunters are tracked and viciously murdered by Aaron Hallum (Benicio del Toro). In the wilderness of British Columbia, L.T. Bonham (Tommy Lee Jones), a former special operations instructor, is approached and asked to apprehend Hallum, his former student who has "gone renegade" after suffering severe battle stress from his time in Kosovo. Bonham is assisted by an FBI task force, led by an agent-in-charge Abby Durrell (Connie Nielsen). Despite the continuing presence of the FBI and local authorities, the search begins and ends as a personal battle between Bonham and Hallum, who contends that the murdered hunters were in fact "sweepers" (assassins who kill other assassins who get out of line).

It is where Manoel de Oliveira grew up and lived in his young adulthood. It shows striking imagery and visual style. It is sweet, and just plain gorgeous to look at.

Germany democracy was faced with a hard challenge in 1977.
Germany in Autumn mixes documentary footage, along with standard movie scenes, to give the audience the mood of Germany during the late 1970s. The movie covers the two month time period during 1977 when a chairman of the German CBI (Martin Schleier) was kidnapped, and later murdered, by the left-wing terrorists known as the RAF-Rote Armee Fraktion (Red Army Faction). 

Schleier had been kidnapped in an effort to secure the release of the orginal leaders of the RAF, also known as the Baader-Meinhof gang. When the kidnapping effort and a plane hijacking in Tunis, Algier failed, the three most prominent leaders of the RAF, Andreas Baader, Gudrun Enslin, and Jean-Carl Raspe, all committed suicide in prison. It has become an article of faith within the left-wing community that these three were actually murdered by the state. This belief has been hardened by the fact that they had killed themselves with guns, which they had kept in their prison cells. All three had been guarded under highest security and it has never been cleared how the guns came to be in their cells.

The movie has several vignettes, including an extended set of scenes with the famous director Rainer Werner Fassbinder discussing his feelings about Germany's political situation at the time. Scenes include documentary footage of the joint funeral of Baader, Enslin, and Raspe.

Saladin, ruler of the kingdoms surrounding the Latin state of Jerusalem, is brought to attack the Christians in the Holy Land by sacking a convoy of Muslim pilgrims, a group which included his sister. In a short campaign against odds, Jerusalem is taken and almost the entire Middle East is in Muslim hands. Crusade is called again in Europe, and the combined forces of the French king, German emperor, and English king form the 3rd Crusade, under the leadership of Richard the Lionheart of England. Although Accre is taken by the Crusaders, Saladin succeeds in preventing the recapture of Jerusalem, and in the end negotiations between himself and Richard (who Saladin admires as the only honorable leader) leave the Holy Land in Muslim hands.

A remake of the classic Spencer Tracy film A Guy Named Joe, Always stars Richard Dreyfuss as a Forest Service pilot who takes great risks with his own life to douse wildfires from a plane. After promising his frightened fiancée (Holly Hunter) to keep his feet on the ground and go into teaching, Dreyfuss's character is killed during one last flight. But his spirit wanders restlessly, hopelessly attached to and possessive of Hunter, who can't see or hear him. Then the real conflict begins: a trainee pilot (Brad Johnson), a likable doofus, begins wooing a not-unappreciative Hunter--and it becomes Dreyfuss's heavenly mandate to accept, and even assist in, their budding romance. The trouble with the film is a certain airlessness, a hyper-inventiveness in every scene and sequence that screams of Spielberg's self-education in Hollywood classicism. Unlike the masters he is constantly quoting and emulating in Always, he forgets to back off and let the movie breathe on its own sometimes, which would better serve his clockwork orchestration of suspense and comedy elsewhere. Still, there are lovely passages in this film, such as the unforgettable look on Dreyfuss's face a half-second before fate claims him. John Goodman contributes good supporting work, and Audrey Hepburn makes her final screen appearance as an angel.

Lonely, middle-aged widow and cleaning lady Emmi Kurowski (Brigitte Mira) goes into an unknown bar during a rainstorm and meets Ali (El Hedi ben Salem), a Moroccan auto mechanic over twenty years her junior. These two "outsiders" like each other immediately, fall in love, and marry. That sends shockwaves through Emmi's family and neighbours, as well as Ali's co-workers and bar buddies. Emmi and Ali's relationship is threatened not only by hostile outside forces, but by problems in themselves which they need to confront if they hope to find lasting happiness together.

Rainer Werner Fassbinder not only directed Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (Angst essen Seele auf), but also scripted the film, designed the sets, and produced. Brigitte Mira heads the cast as a lonely German cleaning woman, who enters into an affair with equally lonely, and much younger, Moroccan mechanic Ali. They marry, despite the shocked, bigoted reactions of those around them. This thinly disguised remake of Douglas Sirk's All That Heaven Allows (cult favorite Sirk was one of Fassbinder's personal heroes) won the international critic's prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

Shot in eye-popping childlike colors, and featuring once of Fassbinder's most ingenious soundtracks, Lola is a stylistic tour de force as well an homage to Josef von Sternberg's classic, The Blue Angel – and a diabolically clever satire of capitalism run amok. Epitomizing Germany's "Economic Miracle," Lola is a scheming but totally ingratiating survivor who has learned how to elevate herself in a world where everything, and everybody, is for sale. Although the film's credits list this as "BRD 3," it was actually shot second in the series, two years after The Marriage of Maria Braun and right before Veronika Voss.

Ten years after the war, West Germany's market economy is booming. Into an unnamed city that's rife with corruption comes a new building commissioner, Herr von Bohm, committed to progress but also upright. He's smitten by Marie-Louise, a single mother who's his landlady's daughter. Von Bohm does not realize she is also Lola, a singer at a bordello and the mistress of Schuckert, a local builder whose profits depend on von Bohm's projects. When von Bohm discovers Marie-Louise's real vocation and looks closely at Schuckert's work, will this social satire play out as a remake of "Blue Angel," a visit of Chekhov to West Germany, or an update of Jean Renoir's "Rules of the Game"?
