Plot Summary: New Iberia Lt. Dave Robicheaux is trying to link the murder of a local hooker to New Orleans mobster Julie (Baby Feet) Balboni-back in his home parish as co- producer of Hollywood director Michael Goldman's Civil War film-when sizzled/psychic movie-star Elrod Sykes, pulled over for drunk driving, starts babbling about a corpse he found in the Atchafalaya Swamp-the corpse of a black man Dave had seen murdered 35 years before.
Synopsis: A detective tracking a serial killer who preys on young women finds his investigation complicated by a glamorous Hollywood starlet and a ruthless crime kingpin in director Bertrand Tavernier's adaptation of the James Lee Burke novel In the Electric Mist with Confederate Dead. Jerzy Kromolowski, Mary Olson-Kromolowski, and Tommy Lee Jones collaborate on the screenplay for the film, which stars Jones, John Goodman, Peter Sarsgaard, Ned Beatty, and Tom Sizemore.
Robicheaux (Tommy Lee Jones) is an alcoholic detective in south Louisiana that is set in his ways of upholding the law and supporting his family. An old high school acquaintance of Robicheaux is the rich and sleazy ‘Baby Feet’ Balboni (John Goodman), who is also a movie producer with a new project in town. One day, Robicheaux pulls over the film’s star Elrod Sykes (Peter Sarsgaard) for speeding and drunk driving and learns that the actor saw a decayed corpse in the marsh where production of the film was taking place. Curious, Robicheaux investigates and learns that it is the body of a murder man he saw shot as a small boy. As he searches for more clues, the mystery becomes more and more complicated with him even being visited by a ghost (Levon Helm), who was a general in the Confederate army.
Director Bertrand Tavernier captures the atmosphere of southern Louisiana well throughout the film, and though so of the accents are heavy-handed, the depiction is pretty standard. The script by Jerzy and Mary Olson Kromolowski is just too much, too much subplot that bogs the film down making it seem like more than a two hour film. The story seems to be fateful to the novel.
Tommy Lee Jones is a good cast to play the complex Robicheaux, who is a likeable despite all his flaws and unethical nature. John Goodman has fun and is over the top playing the corrupt Balboni, which even includes the confident actor strutting around in his swimming trunks. The talent Peter Sarsgaard and Kelly McDonald do what they can with their thin supporting roles as popular movie stars in town for filming
