Dr. Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive), an ardent young scientist, and his devoted assistant Fritz (Dwight Frye), a hunch-back, piece together a human body, the parts of which have been secretly collected from various sources. Frankenstein's consuming desire is to create human life through various electrical devices which he has perfected. Elizabeth (Mae Clarke), his fiancée, is worried to distraction over his peculiar actions. She cannot understand why he secludes himself in an abandoned watch tower, which he has equipped as a laboratory, and refuses to see anyone. She and her friend, Victor Moritz (John Boles), go to Dr. Waldman (Edward Van Sloan), his old medical professor, and ask Dr. Waldman's help in reclaiming the young scientist from his absorbing experiments. Elizabeth, intent on rescuing Frankenstein, arrives just as the eager young medico is making his final tests. They all watch Frankenstein and the hunchback as they raise the dead creature on an operating table, high into the room, toward an opening at the top of the laboratory. Then a terrific crash of thunder—the crackling of Frankenstein's electric machines—and the hand of Frankenstein's monster begins to move.

The 1820s. A sailing ship captained by Robert Walton is iced in in the Arctic. Suddenly the crew see two men pursuing each other across the ice on dog sleds. One of the men collapses and is brought aboard the ship. This proves to be Viktor Frankenstein who proceeds to tell Captain Walton his incredible story. From a young age, Viktor was obsessed with life and death. As a young man he went to Ingolstadt to study where his tutor Professor Waldman encouraged him to think beyond convention. And so Viktor stole dead bodies from graves and pieced them together. He then harnessed lightning from a storm to bring his creation to life. But upon seeing what he had created, Viktor was horrified. The creature ran away but was shunned by everybody it came across because of its hideous appearance. Hiding in the woods, it learned to speak and read from spying in on a family in a cottage. It then returned to Geneva to find its creator. But in its attempts to do so it accidentally killed Frankenstein’s younger brother William and then left evidence that had the maid hung for the murder. Frankenstein confronted his creation who promised to stop its reign of terror if he created a mate for it. But after starting, Frankenstein found that he could not go through with doing so again and burned his notes. The creature promised to take revenge on Frankenstein on his wedding night.
