A businessman facially scarred in a laboratory fire receives psychotherapy from a psychiatrist, and obtains an amazingly lifelike mask from the doctor. Soon after being fitted for the mask, he seduces his wife and succeeds. But his wife claims she was aware all along who he was and believed that both were just masquerading together as most couples usually do in different ways. Strangely enough, his personality seemingly begins to change after he puts on the mask as if the mask has influenced his personality. His new identity does not enable him to reintegrate into society after all. A subplot is inserted in fragments. A good-natured young woman, the right side of whose face is disfigured, has been hurt by others' inquisitive eyes and insults, and has been shunned by men. This film is Francois Ozon's debut, which made him one of the most promising young directors of Europe. Here we have a story, which can be treated as taken as modern 'The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie' by Luis Bunuel. Here a typical French family alters in the most disturbing way. The whole madness starts when father brings home a lab rat. Next the son at the dinner stands and declaims that since that moment he is a gay. Then his sister jumps out of the window trying to commit a suicide...And so on. And the story keeps going till the unusual end, which contains one of the most bizarre sequences in modern European cinema. Acting is at very high level, and so is the directing. Dialogs are pretty witty and memorable. It is difficult to name a genre of this movie, but the closest is - black comedy.

'Woman In The Dunes' is a superb film adaptation of a fascinating novel by Kobo Abe. Abe was heavily influenced by Kafka and wrote several very strange and unforgettable books, but this was his masterpiece. He scripted the movie himself, and the director Hiroshi Teshigahara obviously "got" the material, so the film is also a masterpiece. It includes some of the most striking visual imagery I've ever seen, and I would have to say this movie is among the very best I've watched. Yes, it's THAT good. The two leads (Eija Okada and Kyoko Kishida) both give superb performances and there are some genuinely erotic (though not explicit) scenes between them. Okada plays an insect collector on holiday who finds himself stranded overnight in the country. Kishida is a local woman who agrees to lodge him for the night. However she lives in most unusual circumstances - in a shack surrounded by sand dunes which continually invade her home. To say anything more about what happens would be to spoil the extraordinary movie that follows. You can read it as an allegory or take it as a filmed nightmare, it's up to you, but believe me you won't EVER forget 'Woman In The Dunes'!

This early Hideo Gosha jidai-geki that was released by Criterion opens quite abruptly with a ronin named Gennosuke being hunted down for having killed his clan's counsellor. We're at 1857, on the brink of the Meiji reformation that saw Japan opening to the west after years of seclusion and the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The central plot revolves around the struggle between the old and new in a country on the verge of change. Although short in duration (clocking in at 85 minutes), the story never lets up with numerous twists and a fast pace. A series of events will find Gennosuke and a prospector he meets along the way searching for gold in a mountain, until they get caught up in another clan's schemes. Nothing is what it seems though, and therein lies the beauty of Sword of the Beast. As the story progresses both forwards and backwards (with glimpses in Gennosuke's past in the form of flashbacks), the characters' motives are fully fleshed out and this provides the extra dramatic oomph that pushes Sword of the Beast above "merely OK" territory. Behind all the swordfighting (and there's enough of it to be enjoyed here, certainly not Lone Wolf and Cub though), Gosha has a story to communicate.

With beautiful natural exteriors photographed in stark black and white, confident directing from Gosha, very good swordfighting scenes from actors who know their trade and decent performances all around, Sword of the Beast should appeal to all jidai-geki fans. It's neither as monolithic and tragic as Masaki Kobayashi's work from the same time nor as lyrical as Kurosawa's, but it stands somewhere in the middle, stripped to the essentials with a focus on story and theme.

This is a six minute montage of images of architectural spaces from Tarkovsky's films, intercut with other architectural images which are similar, but clearly not from any Tarkovsky movies. The non-intertextual images are filmed in a Tarkovskian style, making it hard to distinguish the documentary from Tarkovsky's fictional world. This is an apt gesture given how closely intertwined the autobiographical was to Tarkovsky's art. At the end of the short we see the following intertitle, "In this house the great film director Andrei Tarkovsky spent his childhood and adolescence, Zamoskvorechye, 1st Schipkovsky Lane, 1997."

Opération `Béton` (1954) - Jean-Luc Godard

Godard's first movie, and his only film of this kind (in my knowledge). Apparently it is shot at the construction site of Barrage Grande-Dixence, Kanton Wallis, Switzerland, and it is supposed to be a documentary about how this structure was built.

Heavily resembles communist propaganda films, with workers and machines working against a classical music background backed up by a bold "narrateur" obviously touched by the image of man breaking nature at humongous scales.

However, I think it is a pretty rare piece, and if nothing else, I guess it is interesting to see where Godard was coming from later on in his career.

When the girls aren't making out, they share makeup secrets and raid each other's closets. However, Helen's daring nymphomaniac side clashes with Jessica's conservative straight side, and the couple is forced to face some real challenges, one of which is Jessica's hilarious Scarsdale-based matchmaker mother (Tovah Feldshuh).

Description: The story takes place in a future where the world is covered by a new ice age. Review:
This is a reasonably brisk paced and entertaining action thriller. There's a similar story to Spike Lee's critical hit, Inside Man, only Chaos was made two years ago, and is as yet awaiting its release. This may give an indication to the fact the film is not really a bankable product. This is not down to quality, because this is by no means a bad film, it's just what you might call a marketing nightmare, as a theatrical release anyway. It's a "thinks it's cleverer than it is" thriller starring two martial arts stars, but without martial arts. In fact this isn't action all the way as you might expect with Jason Statham and Wesley Snipes as two of the headliners. Eventually this will find a release, but probably DTV.

Chaos is an enjoyable flick though. We have Ryan Phillipe and Jason Statham teaming up to investigate a bank heist. As the title suggests, this film is about Chaos, or the Chaos theory, whereby seemingly random acts are in fact connected. Wesley Snipes co-stars as the bank robber in question. The cast are good. Phillipe shares lead duties with Statham, and handles the film well. His character is pretty two dimensional but he does it convincingly and handles the action well too. Statham, delivering another strange accent, supposedly American, is despite his accent, charismatic. It's Wesley Snipes though who stands out, actually enjoying himself after a string of sub-standard, lazy performances in his DTV action vehicles and also in Blade Trinity

Review:
It's alleged that many kung fu films were written as they went along. Certainly many independent HK and Taiwanese productions have a thrown together feel to them so it's certainly possible but that would force the producers to shoot the film mostly in sequence. Shaw productions generally have the sense that there is some sort of script before they start filming. Here we have a Shaw oddity directed by an obscure one time director at Shaw who seems to have worked in the very same cheap independent productions mentioned above. Well here we have it, a high energy but story wise shapeless film that really does seem like it's from another studio.

A young man, Tieh, is sent by his dying father to live with a kung fu colleague in town. Entering the town, Tieh disrupts a snake-oil medicine scam and runs into a rascally drunk who fights him. Finally finding his father's friend, Tieh makes the discovery that the guy is running the snake-oil medical scam and a fraudulent hospital with his Tibetian (!) gang. Tieh becomes an underling in the gang but is unable to do any of the bad deeds his bosses demand. Accidentally overhearing a drug smuggling scheme, Tieh is beaten, thrown into a lake and left for dead. Rescued by the rascally drunk's god daughter (played by Kara Hui) he gets a job with a grocer and befriends a waiter at a bad restaurant but the Tibetian gang is on his tail again. Tieh ends up sheltered by a Shaolin temple, learns a little kung fu there and more from the drunk's wife, a master of the famed Leper's Fist!

Sound a little all over the place? Well, it is, but fortunately the film is fast paced with lots of fight scenes and a decent sense of humor. The advertising makes it seem that Kara Hui, who's great here, plays the title "Tigress" but she's really a supporting character. The "Tigress", from the best I can tell, is the crazy wife who is afflicted with boils and skin growths. The actress who plays her is quite funny. The character cleans dishes at the Shaolin temple so I assume that's where the title comes from. The fights are sometimes sped up and generally don't make fighting sense unlike other Shaw films. Lots of odd poses and movements. One of the villains wears sunglasses and has what seems to be an American Indian outfit on with a braided pony tail wig. At one point Tieh starts dancing like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever.

Review:
Actually, the title "Lightning Kung Fu" is a bit misleading. There is kung fu, but majority of fighting is swordplay.
Most kung fu movies from the 80s can be either really good or really cheesy. This one is unique since the hero isn't really a hero. The constable is so determined that he doesn't hesitate to kill. So, you get a very jaded portrayal here. However, during his mission, his outlook changes as his allies start to fall by the wayside.
The action scenes in this are really great to watch. There's one scene where an ambush in the dark leaves the constable battling enemies in pitch black! (it was a little difficult to see too). The sword fighting looks authentic and the clanging of blade against blade gets addicting after awhile. The constable's sword looks wicked cool too!! Unlike some cheesy martial arts movies, this one is more serious: you've got fighting, dialogue, then more fighting! Bad guys don't come one on one, they attack at once.

He even gave them names: Rocky because he's "solid and cool as granite rock"; Colt, because he's "fast and free, a spirit of a young wild horse"; and Tum Tum because ambition begins and ends with his tummy". But one day, an old "friend" of Grandpa's, Hugo Snyder, is heard from again. He's being hassled by the FBI, and the boys' father happens to be an FBI officer. So Snyder figures if he kidnaps the father's kids, it will ease the tension, none of his own men are suitable for the task, so he hires three dim and incredibly incompetent surfers to do the deed. The boys treat them to a night of Ninja moves and hilarious gags, ala Home Alone. But the boys soon get captured by Snyder, and what is more, they (especially Colt) becomes doubtful of their grandfather, until Grandpa bursts into action and fights Snyder.

Having just been abandoned by his girlfriend, René decides dieting is the only way to win back her love. The portly actor proceeds to reevaluate his old lifestyle in order to meet his goal of shedding pounds, and in the process, he gets a chance to revise his personality and examine his life from an entirely different point of view. It should be noted that over the course of filming, Lefrançois did actually lose nearly 70 pounds. René was in competition at the 2002 Locarno International Film Festival.

Awesome film!! My wife and I saw it in Florida at the Lauderdale Film Festival. The most amazing story of redemption I've ever seen. It was mysterious and romantic and hilarious. The ending took my breath away. Apparently the writer/director David Wall also played the lead role of Father Jonathan Keene. We thought he was great, my wife thought he looked like a young Robert Redford. Wall's wife in real life played the role of Marjorie Worthington. She was perfect, very classy lady. Apparently their daughter plays the title role of Noelle. What a hauntingly beautiful little girl. This movie will stay with you. Can't wait for it to open as I want to take my parents and our kids. I imagine there may be some controversy among religious folks over this one as Wall plays a Catholic priest but I applaud him for his courage in portraying a priest as a real human being, as a man grappling with his faith. We think this one will be a classic.

Germany in Autumn does not have a plot per se; it mixes documentary footage, along with standard movie scenes, to give the audience the mood of Germany during the late 1970s. The movie covers the two month time period during 1977 when a businessman was kidnapped, and later murdered, by the left-wing terrorists known as the RAF-Rote Armee Fraktion (Red Army Faction). When the kidnapping effort and a plane hijacking effort failed, the three most prominent leaders of the RAF, Andreas Baader, Gudrun Enslin, and Jean-Carl Raspe, all committed suicide in prison. It has become an article of faith within the left-wing community that these three were actually murdered by the state. The movie has several vignettes, including an extended set of scenes with the famous director Rainer Werner Fassbinder discussing his feelings about Germany's political situation at the time. Fassbinder's scenes almost seem to be candid documentary footage, but aren't. Other scenes include documentary footage of the joint funeral of Baader, Enslin, and Raspe.

An intense plot and a totally unexpected ending make up this film, which features characters who are vulnerable, innocent and ordinary, but who become ruthless and callous, worrying only about protecting their financial resources. Rock Haven (2007) David Lewis

Brady is a shy, introspective 18 year old spending the summer before going away to college in a small coast town in Northern California. He is there with his widowed mother, who is a devout Christian in the process of establishing a religious school for the local pastor. Brady spends most of his time either reading the bible or staring off at the waves crashing on shore, until he meets a neighbor's free- spirited visiting son, 19 year old Clifford. While we later find out that Brady had some early inklings that he was somewhat attracted to other boys, he never before felt drawn to anyone as he feels to Clifford, and the other boy makes it clear that the feeling is mutual. Sensing his apprehensions and inexperience, Clifford lets their relationship develop slowly over the course of the summer, and, although he kids Brady about being a "nerd" in many of his interests, is careful not to express a conflict with his religious upbringing and convictions.

Upset by the soldiers and resources wasted in recapturing escaped Allied prisoners of war (POWs), the German High Command concentrates the most-determined and successful of these prisoners to a new, high-security prisoner of war camp that the commandant, Colonel von Luger (Hannes Messemer), proclaims escape-proof. The film opens as the Gestapo deliver to the camp the most dangerous prisoner of all, "Big X", Squadron Leader Roger Bartlett (Richard Attenborough), warning him that he will be shot should he ever again escape. Locked up with "every escape artist in Germany", Bartlett immediately plans the greatest escape attempted—a tunnel system for exfiltrating 250 prisoners of war. The first escape attempt, conceived whilst in the cooler, is by USAAF Capt. Virgil Hilts (McQueen) and RAF Flying Officer Archibald Ives (Angus Lennie); they are caught and returned to the cooler. Later, when the three Americans in camp (Hendley, Hilts, and Goff) are celebrating American Independence Day with the other (mainly British) POWs, the guards discover tunnel "Tom". Because of that, the depressed Ives climbs the barbed wire fence to escape, while in view of the tower guards. Hilts notices and runs to stop him, but is too late as Ives is machine-gunned dead on the wire.

The film opens with a middle-aged, yet still athletic James Bond making his way through an armed camp in order to rescue a girl who has been kidnapped. After infiltrating a house and killing the kidnappers, Bond lets his guard down, forgetting that the girl might have been subject to the Stockholm syndrome (in which a kidnapped person comes to identify with his/her kidnappers) and is stabbed to death by her. Or so it seems. In fact, the attack on the camp is nothing more than a field training exercise using blank ammunition and fake knives, and one Bond fails because he ends up "dead" (a previous "fake" mission saw his legs get blown off by a land mine). A new M is now in office, one who sees little use for the 00-section. In fact, Bond has spent most of his recent time teaching, rather than doing, a fact he points out with some resentment.

Arthur Russell's music is the very product of its time and space, NY in the 70-80's, and the very product of a country man meeting the most free and creative art scenes. You'd find all of this in his art, sweet melancholy, great tension, sensuality, sound researches (what he brings out of his cello is just amazing), and ultimately an incredible sense of groove in his proto-disco gems.
This documentary tells the life of this great artist through the vision of people who lived around him, or worked with him, his parents, his ever loving boy-friend (a very moving character), the likes of Allen Ginsberg, Philip Glass, label owners, musicans, etc...

I'm a great fan of Arthur Russell and when I saw this DVD just released, I jumped on it. If you like it, buy it, but you'll soon want to get yourself Arthur Russell's albums anyways !

`Maybe, Maybe Not' is one of the most odd movies I've ever seen. I liked it. I think I liked it because it is so completely different than all the American movies I'm used to seeing. In the beginning, the main character, Axel, decides to randomly have sex with some girl in the bathroom of his workplace. A woman in the next stall recognizes the key chain that dropped from one of the fornicating couple's clothes. She peeks over the stall to find her boyfriend of three years mindlessly humping another woman. She kicks him out of their apartment and throughout the rest of the movie he struggles with where to live. Initially he calls old girlfriends who all readily turn him away. Then he ends up at a `men's group' with a lot of gay guys. After that, he gets drunk at a party and goes home to sleep at one of their houses. This is when the gender preference battle begins. A lot of stereotypes were defied in this movie and I found that extremely refreshing. For example, it is commonly thought in American society that gay men are promiscuous, however in this movie, no homosexual sex is shown. There is one man-to-man kiss in the club and in another scene homosexual activity is inferred while watching slides but not directly shown on the screen. There are, however, two comparatively graphic heterosexual scenes. Another stereotype defied was the `effeminate gay men' stereotype. The main gay character, Norbert, didn't act effeminate at all, not even in drag. My favorite part of the movie however perpetuated and made fun of an existing stereotype - the stupid Stallone-loving straight guy. The guys in the movie theater were very intriguing. I thought they added welcome comic relief to an otherwise tense and dark movie.

Although wildly popular, it is also blamed for increased crime and unemployment. Christian A. The sub-committee decides to view excerpts from a "typical" day of Tunnelvision broadcasting. OK... this movie so far has been slated by critics and board-posters alike (although playing devil's advocate you could suggest that critics are often people who didn't make it for themselves as film-makers, and board posters are often people who didn't make it for themselves as critics) so I wanted to sit in Guy's corner with the magic sponge to perhaps reach maybe a couple of the people who've decided not to see the film based on how everybody seems to be looking down their collective nose of approval at it.

The film's biggest flaw in earning wide support is how unexpectedly complex it is. This has been described many times as as making the film "inaccessible" to the viewer. The film's chronology is relatively non-linear and the characters are used as not only a means of storytelling but as a device for showing us the subtle (or not so subtle) hints of bias we give things as we commit them to memory, IE. Ray Liotta's character brandishing a gun saying the words "fear me" is portrayed as both tragically pathetic (from Statham's POV) or interrogating and bold (from Liotta's POV). This is but one example of Ritchie's far more mature approach he has taken to film-making with Revolver, we have a storyline which is pretty archetypal (the strong but silent gritty anti-hero gets released from jail with a score to settle but gets drawn inadvertently into a world of corruption... I mean it's paint by numbers film noir here guys, all the way down to the vague poetic choice of diction and the gritty voice-overs) but then Guy has taken this framework to make a number of extremely philosophical and complex points.

Take the scene where Jason Statham's character runs afoul of a car. This throwaway sequence could have been emitted from the film and made no difference to the story whatsoever... but Ritchie is making point about how such little chance happenings such as receiving a phone call can make the difference between life and death.

So the final act of the movie is pretty mind boggling, I'd be taking the p*ss if I said I didn't spend the last 20 minutes or so of the film turning to my date going "uh... wtf?"... but that is the shoddiest reason to disregard a piece of art. It is far too easy to dislike something because you find it hard to understand. And even easier to say "well nobody else seemed to understand it so it must be a real turd of a film!". In my humble opinion, Revolver is a stylish, complex and mature piece of modern art which should be greeted with the same manner we would give the work of the Saatchi Brothers. If we choose this opportunity to collectively say "Ah sh*t, I wanted a film about a load of bleeding' cockney gangsters in-nit loll... Guy Ritchie is a tit!" then the day will come when film-makers are allowed only to make that which is expected of them by shallow, crappy people. Just because Guy made a name for himself with funny, cheeky cockney romps, doesn't mean he can't be deep without being "pretentious". Funny people can be thoughtful too.

The setting is Mexico at the time of the Revolution. Juan Miranda (Rod Steiger), by all appearances a poor campesino, is picked up by a stagecoach carrying a group of the wealthy Mexican upper class. The stagecoach driver, thinking it a great joke, lets him ride with these elite snobs who immediately treat Juan as if he were an animal, talking about him as if he were too unintelligent to understand their cruel taunts. Soon they drive past a group of poor Mexicans, mostly children, and as the stagecoach slows to climb a steep hill the driver orders them to help push. Guns suddenly appear and drivers are killed. They are bandits and Juan Miranda is their leader (and for many, their father). They set about robbing the rich passengers of everything they own including most of their clothing. Although we are not shown, it is suggested that Juan rapes the female who was aboard the carriage. All are bundled into an abandoned cart, tied together, and set rolling down the hill where they land in a pile of mud.

In Los Angeles, the street gangs unite and declare war to the police. Meanwhile, a father stops his car in a suburb and his daughter goes to an ice-cream truck to buy a vanilla ice-cream. She is murdered in cold blood by a member of one gang. The father follows the guy, kills him with many shots and runs to the Precinct 13. The policeman Bishop has just assumed the police station, which is not in operation but waiting to be closed on the next morning. With him, there are two women: the telephone operator and Leigh. A few moments before the arrival of the shocked father, a bus transporting three prisoners had stopped there and the escort policemen requested cells to lock the prisoners while waiting for a doctor for one of them that is ill. Suddenly the precinct is under siege and violent attack of street gangs.

Somtum, the food, is a spicy treat. It's best shared with friends. You can all dip into the same plate of spicy, sweet and sour papaya salad with your forks, and daub up the juices with generous helpings of sticky rice.
And Somtum, the movie, is a lot of fun, too. And, yes, you should see it with friends, and marvel at this action-packed, oftentimes silly, but also very sweet tale.
Nathan Jones, the towering Australian strongman and former WWE wrestler, who's played a screaming, menacing madman in such films as Troy, Fearless and Tom Yum Goong, gets to play the face -- the good guy -- in Somtum. It must have been refreshing for him after being cast as the heel time after time.
He's Barney Emerald, a happy-go-lucky bloke who's having a night out in Pattaya, where he's charmed by a pretty woman who keeps urging him to "drink, drink, drink". Soon Barney is bleary-eyed and blacked out. Next thing he knows, he is in a police station with nothing but his trousers.
Given a token 50 baht by a soft-hearted cop (Dan Chupong, making a comic entrance), Barney catches a motorcycle to the tourist information center, which ends up being closed. With no place to go, he sits down on a nearby curb, and while he's there, a girl comes running by. She's Katen (Narawat Techarattanaprasert), an orphan street hustler and pickpocket. Soon some bad guys come looking for the girl, and the behemoth Barney can't help but get in the way. But the big guy is as timid as a mouse, and is pretty much useless in a fight. Backup comes in the form of Katen's friend Dokya (Sasisa Jindamanee), a pint-sized Muay Thai fireball who explodes in a wonderous fury of whupass.
The bad guys scattered to the wind, Katen and Dokya take the bruised, battered Barney to the local Buddhist temple, where he's given shelter and some clothing by the kindly monk. Thus begins Barney's start at rebuilding his life.
But first he tears things apart. On a visit to Dokya's mother's beachside somtum stall, Barney witlessly ingests a heaping mouthful of the chilli- and fishsauce-infused salad, mouse-turd peppers and all. It makes him lose his mind. Instead of the green Hulk, he turns red with rage, and in a desperate attempt to find some water to cool his mouth, he twists and turns like a tornado and lays waste to the stall.
Now apologetic, humble Barney has a mission -- to help rebuild the somtum stand. The girls decide he should learn Muay Thai and enter the ring at the local underground fight club.
Meanwhile, there are some nefarious foreigners (7-foot-tall Conan Stevens and a Frenchman - Philippe Wanet) hanging about with a special device that appears to be a laptop computer but can actually conceal contraband, like drugs, money or stolen diamonds. The device is keyed by a special crystal that makes Thai criminals get sparkles in their eyes.
How the two plotlines -- big, soft-hearted Barney and the stinking bad guys with their stolen diamonds -- come together is the magic of Somtum. Like some types of experimental spicy salad, the mix works fitfully at times, but is mostly fun.
Some guest appearances and feature fights keep it interesting. The girl boxer Sasisa, grown up since her appearance as a half-pint-sized Muay Thai fighter in Born to Fight is a wonder to behold, a lethal combination of flying knees, elbows and dimples.
In fact, Somtum is a Born to Fight reunion of sorts. Dan Chupong makes an appearance as a policeman and he mixes it up in a comical kitchen fight. Taekwando artist Kessarin "Nui" Ektawatkul, who played Chupong's sister in Born to Fight, shows up as a hilarious toothpick-chomping papaya vendor who pitches in to help Dokya out in a street fight.
There's some foreign wrestlers on hand, too, and they mix it up with Nathan toward the end of the movie. It's a unique mix - rasslin' piledrivers and Muay Thai kicks. Somehow, it works.
With action choreography by Panna Rittikrai (who also takes producer credit), I got the sense that the criticism leveled at some of his past films, about fighters hanging around in the background waiting for the protagonist to attack, has been duly noted. In Somtum, when a bad guy is put down on the ground, they stay down. Or if several people attack at once, they are dealt with in ways that at least seem plausible.

A decent entry in the martial world genre from director Sun Cheung.
We are introduced to the efforts of the Five Clans to eradicate the "evil" renegade clan. Not much is shown regarding this as the movie centers around the story of the "Proud Youth" who heroically rescues a Taoist nun from a rapist, she then nurses his wounds which angers the Taoist high priestess and the Youth's clan leader, his adopted father. They both refuse to listen to the nun or the youth about the circumstances. There's also a subplot regarding a warrior who is friend to a member of the "evil" clan which angers the leader of the Five Clans. A running theme in this movie is the clash between rigid social mores, pure friendship and moral righteousness. Anyway, it's filled with intrigue and plot twists.
The film is less stylized then other Sun Cheung films, it seems more like an offering from Yuen Chor who specialized in "martial world" movies. While filled with the requisite fantastic fighting techniques, crazy weapons and wire-fu, the action scenes show Sun Cheung's solid direction and editing. The fight scenes in his movies frequently seem more intense then the other Shaw directors.

Review:
Sun Chung is one of the lesser known of the Shaw stable of action directors. Many of his films are unknown outside of the local Chinatowns in the US. The only one that seems to have been dubbed was the excellent "Avenging Eagle". Fortunately as the Shaw library is finally being remastered and released on DVD we are getting to see Sun Chung's filmography.
This film is an entry in the "martial world clan" genre where various clans fight it out for control. Here one clan is accused of massacring another clan and is brought to trial at a tribunal of all the clans. Meanwhile two "lone wolf" assassins (played by Diavid Chiang and Ching Li) are sought out to do some behind the scenes intrigue. There are a number of characters in the story but they are all clearly defined and it's easy to follow the complicated plot.
The standouts are the artful yet strong direction from Sun Chung and the excellent battle scenes and martial art choreography from Tang Chia. The fights are really well shot and edited. The Shaw regulars do their usual good job acting and moving.
