The movie starts with Max Payne (Mark Wahlberg) struggling to surface in a frosted river while also narrating. The film then cuts to one week earlier, showing Max working as a clerk in the cold-case unit and his obsession with finding the fleeing killer who brutally murdered his wife, Michelle, and newborn daughter. Max then attends a party run by his snitch, Trevor Duncan, where he meets Natasha Sax (Olga Kurylenko) and her sister, Mona (Mila Kunis). Natasha and Max go back to his place where she demonstrates her desire to have sex and even offers to act as Max's deceased wife. An upset Max asks Natasha to leave and while she is walking in a alleyway and talking to her drug dealer on the phone, she is hunted, attacked and killed by a mysterious flying entity.

It´s the best sequence in a Melville film that doesn´t involve a chirping canary. Three men crouch on a rooftop, their faces barely visible through the gloom. They duck as a spotlight rotates. Two guards walk by below. Now we finally get our first close-ups of the men. If you don´t know who the star is, you can´t yet tell which one is our protagonist. One man leaps fro the roof and catches the top of a wall. The wall shakes under his weight, obviously a flimsy stage prop. He tosses a rope over the other side. A dog barks. The other two men jump. They climb down the rope. Next, they´re running through the woods and the opening credits roll.

With just a handful of crisp, concrete shots and not a word of dialogue, Melville demonstrates his famous economy of language. This is "muscular prose" a la Hemingway, all the flesh and fat flensed away until only the bones remain. Jump. Climb. Run.

Eventually, our lead character emerges. Gu(stave) Minda has finally escaped prison after serving ten years of his sentence. Why now, nobody quite knows. His foil, Inspector Blot (Paul Meurisse) doesn´t particularly care: he just wants Gu brought to justice by any means necessary. As you would expect from that dead simple set-up, "Le deuxième souffle" (1966) is a cat-and-mouse game between cop and crook, but the narrative unfolds in ways unique to Melville.

Gu is played by the great Lino Ventura, known mostly as a character actor in the 50s. He first appeared in Jacques Becker´s "Touchez pas au grisbi" (1954) which makes it little surprise that Melville, a huge fan of both the film and of Becker, cast him as the lead here. Ventura, a former wrestler, had a chiseled, weather-worn face that would have been tragically wasted in the pre-cinema age. He has always reminded me of Roy Scheider, in the sense that he brings an easy, instant credibility to every role he plays. He is thoroughly convincing as a gangster, a resistance fighter (in Melville´s "Army of Shadows") and even as Jean Valjean in "Les misérables" (1982).

Ventura´s stoic confidence grounds the film in a way that is essential to its success. Like most of Melville´s characters, Gu is defined by his wardrobe, his mannerisms and his "code of honor" rather than any psychological motivation. We have no access to his interior life. For a film that is, at least in part, a character study, this could be death for such an ill-defined character but it is Ventura´s physicality, his face, his body, his movements, that makes Gu a worthy object of our attention. Gu, as written, is not particularly interesting. Gu, as embodied by Ventura, is fascinating.

After his escape, Gu quickly reconnects with his loyal friend Alban (Michael Constantin) and his girlfriend Manouche (Christine Fabréga). Both characters are interesting, but Manouche is the one who really stands out. She is neither a buxom young beauty nor a scheming femme fatale. Fabréga was only 35 when the film was shot, but Manouche seems older, wearier and wiser. In other words, she is a worthy partner for her grizzled gangster lover, an equal rather than a mere plot device to test the male lead.

Inspector Blot is another character who commands our attention. He´s a bit of a cliché as an eccentric and overconfident investigator who always seems to be one step ahead of everyone else, but it´s the mix of confidence and cynicism that makes Meurisse´s performance so interesting. In an early scene after a bar shootout, Blot doesn´t even bother to ask anyone questions. He knows the two-bit thugs are going to deny everything, so he simply tells them what their false testimony is and gets on with his day.

Blot´s pursuit of Gu is dogged but elliptical. Blot (and Gu for that matter) drop out of the film for certain periods of time as different characters take center stage (a bit like "High and Low") for a while. In fact, it´s quite easy to forget about the inspector when we get deeply involved with Gu´s criminal plans, but Blot is always lurking somewhere around the perimeter waiting to act.

Description: Absolutely amazing! I never predicted that this very serious and thoughtful film could have been so great! This is a very difficult work of Mr. Wajda, here you will not see a bloody fight or an equestrian battle. Here, this is a very slow and philosophical story about false, double-faced, insincere and stupid life of actors. Their life is never true, it is all one endless play, false and puffy. All the heroes talk about unnamed actor who finally died on a train accident, and even his death became a show. Everything there is a show - love, death, tears, words, feelings. You feel a strange vapid, tasteless feel during the film but that is what Wajda exactly intended to achieve. This strange and unending boredom never leaves you, but this is a real feat to make a boredom look like a masterwork. I do recommend this movie for all who think that actors may be even a bit sincere. No, they cannot. This film proves it.
