As a visual narrative 66 scener fra America is reminiscent of a pile of postcards from a journey, which indeed is what the film is. It consists of a series of lengthy shots of a tableau nature, each appearing to be a more or less random cross section of American reality, but which in total invoke a highly emblematic picture of the USA. With the one travelling shot (through a car windscreen) and one pan (across a landscape) the tableau principle is only breached on two occasions; exceptions that prove the rule, so to speak. The images or postcards may be viewed as a number of interlaced chains of motifs, varying from ultra close up to super wide, include pictures of landscapes, highways and advertising hoardings, buildings seen from without, mostly with a fluttering Stars and Stripes somewhere in the shot, objects such as coins on a counter, refrigerator with a number of typical food products, a plate of food at a diner or a bottle of Wild Turkey, and finally, people who introduce themselves (and sometimes the content of their lives in rough-hewn form) facing the camera: for example, the New York cabbie or the celebrities Kim Larsen and Andy Warhol. The film actually consists of 75 shots but in some cases several shots combine in one scene, thus ending on sixty six. Each scene is delimited by the narrator; at the end of each shot he pins down the picture content, often by a simple indication of time or place, but in some cases more playfully, often shifting our perception in a surprising fashion. Similarly the sound close-ups in some scenes are intended to alter the viewer's immediate interpretation of the picture content, while the mood-creating or interpretive use of Erik Satie's Gnossiennes (No. 5) provides the final component of the film.

Long before Los Angeles's contribution to modern culture became widely recognized, British architectural historian Reyner Banham proclaimed it one of the world's great cities.
Banham's influential yet controversial book Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies (1971) saw beauty in the city's sprawling layout and car-based urbanism.
Shortly after the book's publication, the BBC documented Banham's vision of Los Angeles for an episode of its series One Pair of Eyes.

The documentary, Reyner Banham Loves Los Angeles (1972, 52 min.), takes the viewer on a tongue-in-cheek tour of the city's cultural landscape.
The trip includes stops at iconic landmarks such as Simon Rodia's Watts Towers and the Lovell "Health" House designed by Richard Neutra (a photograph of the latter is on view in the Getty Research Institute's current exhibition Julius Shulman, Modernity and the Metropolis), as well as mini-malls, drive-thrus, and strip clubs.
An entertaining and thoughtful examination of a metropolis in motion, the film documents a city situated at the divide between the modern era's clean lines and faith in progress—as captured in the work of architectural photographer Julius Shulman—and what has been described as Banham's "Pop Art" view, with its sparkle-front houses, Tiki huts, and jarring juxtapositions.

Reyner Banham (1922-1988) was a prolific architectural critic and writer best known for his 1960 theoretical treatise "Theory and Design in the First Machine Age", and his 1971 book "Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies" in which he categorized the Angelean experience into four ecological models (Surfurbia, Foothills, The Plains of Id, and Autopia) and explored the distinct architectural cultures of each ecology.

Melvyn Bragg, who returns to the series to present Francis Bacon, doesn't help the fence-sitters. In his introduction, he claims that Bacon is "widely held to be the greatest living painter in the world." Yet from the moment of their first filmed meeting, which takes place in a darkened storeroom at the Tate Gallery before a slideshow of various paintings (Bacon's and others), Bragg harasses and antagonizes his guest in a manner I find utterly offensive. He begins insidiously by showing the artist slides of works by Pollock and Rothko (both of whom Bacon is known to dislike), and hits his mark soon after: while showing Van Gogh's The Night Café (1888), Bragg quotes Vincent as having said he sees the café as a "place one can ruin oneself, run mad or commit a crime." Bacon then defends the "nightlife," playing right into the hands of his host. Later in the piece, the cameras follow Bacon on an evening tour of his favorite haunts, which include seedy London bars and casinos. Once the artist is thoroughly snoggered, Bragg closes in for the kill, striking far below the belt.

The most interesting, enlightening segment is the tour of Bacon's dark, cramped studio, encrusted with decades of paint, where he shares a small sampling of his reference photo collection. Images of people deformed by disease, wrestlers and bullfighters grappling, and humans caught in the contortions of motion (Muybridge) begin to illuminate his "muse." Here, the dialogue between the two men is at its least adversarial and most insightful.

But all too soon, Bragg whisks his victim away to a café for more talk over red wine. When asked to comment on some negative adjectives used to describe his paintings, Bacon manages to reply, "If you read the newspapers, if you look at television, if you know what's going on in the world, what could I do that competes with the horrors going on?" and sufficiently deflects his inquisitor, as one imagines he has done, similarly, hundreds of times throughout his long career.

Bacon's iconography relies on grotesque and deformed figures, often captured writhing in pain or terror, set in stark, surrealistic surroundings. Unsettling to be sure, but there is something important to face in these images: mortality, torture, and suffering, all the stuff of life we hope to avoid even in death, but it's there. What compels this artist to paint these images? Even after this viewing, I don't know. But I will continue to be haunted by them, and perhaps in some terrible hour, I will understand.

A little drunk on its own arcane exotica as a gambling movie, Rounders is a film that takes us inside a world of high-stakes card players but falls short on such essentials as character development, relationships, that sort of thing. Still, it is a real curiosity, written by a couple of guys (David Levien and Brian Koppelman) who appear to know something about the dark underbelly of card hustling for fun and profit. Matt Damon stars as a reluctant law student who can't put aside his subterranean career of playing poker and blackjack for big money. After he loses his post-grad nest egg to a weird Russian kingpin (John Malkovich)--and also loses his disgusted girlfriend (Gretchen Mol) in the process--Damon's character turns to an unreliable old buddy (Edward Norton) for a dangerous game of sharking wherever there happens to be a game underway: frat boys, cops, bad dudes, you name it. Damon's charm and intelligence bring some oomph to the curiously flat proceedings, and while his hushed, soul-bearing scenes with Martin Landau (as a law professor who takes a shine to the kid) seem gratuitous, they're still nice to watch. Behind all this is director John Dahl (Red Rock West), who is not exactly at the top of his game here but who brings his distinctive toughness to the crime-noir tone.

Synopsis: John Dahl directed this exploration of New York private clubs devoted to high-stakes poker, with first-person narration from the film's central figure, law student Mike McDermott (Matt Damon), who loses his entire savings to Russian club owner Teddy KGB (John Malkovich). Mike then turns away from cards, devoting his attentions to his law studies and his live-in girlfriend Jo (Gretchen Mol), who's concerned when Mike's former gambling buddy Worm (Edward Norton) is released from prison. She has good reason to worry, since it takes Worm only a matter of minutes to draw Mike back into poker action. When she learns Mike has returned to the poker clubs, she moves out, and Mike begins to lose interest in his studies. Worm has a pre-prison debt, and the threatening Grama (Michael Rispoli) wants the money. Mike not only indulges the irresponsible Worm, he gets involved in Worm's debts. When Grama demands 15,000 on a five-day deadline, the two buddies go into high gear with a non-stop, no-sleep gambling binge that spirals downward toward an ultimate confrontation with Teddy KGB. Darkened club interiors and New York nights are captured by the cinematography of Jean Yves Escoffier, who moved from French films (the 1991 Les Amants du Pont Neuf) to American movies with the reflective surfaces of Excess Baggage (1997) and the patina of pathos found in Harmony Korine's experimental Gummo (1997). Shown at the 1998 Venice Film Festival and the 1998 Montreal Film Festival.

Pumpkin and Honey Bunny are two thieves who, while dining at a coffee shop, decide that the best thing to do is to rob it. Vincent and Jules, two hit men working for mob kingpin Marcellus Wallace, are sent to retrieve a very special and very mysterious briefcase for their boss. Vincent later must also show Mrs. Wallace a good time while her husband is out. Butch Coolidge is an aging prizefighter who is being paid to "take a dive", but instead, accidentally kills him opponent, and tries to flee town, but not before getting his dead father's lucky golden watch. These four seemingly unrelated stories are interwoven together in a non-linear fashion.

In 1935, inmates at the Cold Mountain Correctional Facility call Death Row "The Green Mile" because of the dark green linoleum that tiles the floor. Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) is the head guard on the Green Mile when a new inmate is brought into his custody: John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), convicted of the sadistic murder of two young girls. Despite his size and the fearsome crimes for which he's serving time, Coffey seems to be a kind and well-mannered person who behaves more like an innocent child than a hardened criminal. Soon Edgecomb and two of his fellow guards, Howell (David Morse) and Stanton Barry Pepper), notice something odd about Coffey: he's able to perform what seem to be miracles of healing among his fellow inmates, leading them to wonder just what sort of person he could be, and if he could have committed the crimes with which he was charged. The Green Mile also stars James Cromwell as the warden; Michael Jeter, Sam Rockwell, and Graham Greene as inmates awaiting dates with the electric chair; and Harry Dean Stanton as a clever trustee.

Mike (Mos Def) is working at a declining VHS rental store called Be Kind Rewind in Passaic, New Jersey. Mike's best friend Jerry (Jack Black) accompanies Mike while he works at the video store. Mike is fascinated by the story that Fats Waller, the legendary jazz musician, was born in the very store (according to the store's owner, Mr. Fletcher). Fletcher (Danny Glover) is informed by Passaic town officials that his store is scheduled to be demolished and replaced with a new building complex, unless he can raise funds to renovate his building. Mr. Fletcher decides to get ideas on how to increase business by spying on a successful chain of DVD rental stores. He puts Mike in charge of Be Kind Rewind while he is away. While leaving by train he writes a last-minute instruction on the window: "Keep Jerry out". Mike sees this in mirror image, and needs some time to decipher it.

The story deals with the sensationalism of tabloid news and the political climate of panic over Red Army Faction terrorism in the 1970s Federal Republic of Germany. The main character, Katharina Blum, is an innocent housekeeper whose life is ruined by an invasive tabloid reporter and a police investigation when the man with whom she has just fallen in love turns out to be wanted by the police because of a bank robbery. Later it turns out that he "only" emptied a safe and deserted. Ultimately she shoots the reporter, after she invited him to her house for an interview. The book's fictional tabloid paper, Die ZEITUNG (The Newspaper), is modeled on the actual German Bild-Zeitung.

The plot is centered around two underachieving pot smokers - Silas P. Silas (Method Man) and Jamal King (Redman). A struggling young writer takes to following strangers around the streets of London, ostensibly to find inspiration for his new novel. Initially, he sets strict rules for himself regarding whom he should follow and for how long, but quickly discards them as he becomes addicted. He is spotted whilst following a well-manicured young man dressed in a dark suit. He introduces himself as "Cobb", and the young man gives his name as "Bill". Cobb asks the young man if he works for the police, before revealing that his appearance is a ruse. He is in fact a professional thief. Cobb invites the young man to help him in various burglaries. The material gains from these crimes seem to be of secondary importance to Cobb, who takes pleasure in rifling through the personal items in his victim's flats. He explains that his true passion is using the shock of robbery to make them re-examine their lives.

When he arrives to open up the store, he realizes that the shutters outside will not open because someone jammed gum in the locks. With the shutters down, the store appears closed, so he writes "I assure you; we're open" in shoe polish on a large bed sheet and hangs it in front of the store.

The film centers around Shuya Nanahara (Tatsuya Fujiwara), a charismatic young boy living in Kanagawa Prefecture. After his mother abandons him and his father commits suicide, he becomes disillusioned with life. The rest of his classmates are similarly disillusioned, and have little respect for authority. Shuya's best friend, Yoshitoki "Nobu" Kuninobu (Yukihiro Kotani), attacks their ench (principal) Kitano (Takeshi Kitano), but runs away before he can be identified. Noriko Nakagawa (Aki Maeda), a sweet, reserved young girl who happens to witness the incident, hides the knife that Nobu has just attacked Kitano with. Kitano, frustrated, resigns.

The next year, as the students are nearing the end of their compulsory education, they embark on a class trip. On the bus the entire class is gassed, kidnapped, taken to an isolated island, and fitted with electronic collars. Once there, the students are shocked to find that they are inside an abandoned school, and that Kitano (along with the government) is behind the entire operation. Kitano informs them that they have been selected as participants in Battle Royale, a game created by the Millennial Educational Reform Act (better known as the Battle Royale Act) where the students must kill each other until only one is left. One class from the country per year is selected to participate in the program. If after three days a winner is not declared, the explosive collars attached to each student's neck will be detonated. The collars also prevent the students entering certain areas of the field of participation, the "danger zones," the idea being to force students to encounter one another. (These instructions are delivered by a cute, smiling girl via a video, who behaves like a kindergarten teacher and refers to herself as their "big sister".) After killing a student, Fumiyo Fujiyoshi, for whispering, Kitano also detonates Nobu's collar, killing him. One by one, each student leaves the school, having been provided with survival packs and a random weapon.

Over several years, we follow three households and their emotions in a barrio of Havana. Magalis is a nurse, rarely happy. Synopsis: Filmmaker Humberto Solas weaves together three stories of people struggling to find love and security on the margins of life in Havana in this poignant comedy-drama. At the time of production, this was the most expensive 2-hour television/cable movie ever made, with a budget of over $30 million. The film is based on The Life of General Villa which was shot in 1914. The actual contract that Pancho Villa signed with Frank N. Thayer and the Mutual Film Company on January 5, 1914 to film the Battle of Ojinaga still exists and is in a museum in Mexico City. The original film has been lost, but some unedited film reels of the battle, showing Pancho Villa and his army fighting Federal forces, as well as photographs and publicity stills taken from the original film still exist.

Synopsis: Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa (Antonio Banderas) finds himself without adequate funding to finance his war against the military-run government. He also finds himself at odds with the Americans because of the Hearst media empire's press campaign against him. To counter both of these threats, he sends emissaries to movie producers to convince them to pay to film his progress and the actual battles. Producer D.W. Griffith (Colm Feore) becomes interested and sends Frank Thayer (Eion Bailey) with a film crew to develop film reels.
Thayer becomes horrified and fascinated by the bandit. He finds an enigmatic individual that is both ghoulishly brutal and charmingly captivating. Assistant director Little Bill is married to a porn star who constantly humiliates him by having sex, frequently in public, with other men. At a New Year's Eve party marking the start of the 1980s, he shoots her and her lover and then turns the gun on himself in front of the guests. This marks a major turning point in the movie, as most of the characters' lives take a turn for the worse as the new decade begins.
The film moves from one character to another, showing their attempts to make lives for themselves in the adult film industry and their failures when they leave it. Jack's porno empire flounders after his main source of funding, Colonel James, is imprisoned for possession of child pornography. His new financier, Floyd Gondoli, insists on cutting costs by shooting on videotape, a format Jack detests. He also is unhappy with the lack of scripts and character development in the projects Gondoli expects him to churn out as quickly as possible. He tries to revitalize his career by having Rollergirl ride with him in a limousine while they search for random strangers to have sex with her in the back seat while a crew tapes it. When the man they choose recognizes Rollergirl as his former high school classmate Brandy and insults her, Jack severely beats him and leaves him bleeding and half-conscious and on the street.Leading lady Amber Waves, who took Eddie under her wing when he joined Jack's stable of actors, finds herself in a nasty custody battle with her former husband. The court determines she is an unfit mother due to her involvement in the porn industry, her prior criminal record, and her addiction to cocaine, leaving her distraught. Buck Swope marries fellow porn star Jessie St. Vincent, who shortly thereafter becomes pregnant. After being denied a bank loan to open a store specializing in stereo equipment, Buck stops at a donut shop and finds himself in the middle of a holdup. The clerk, thief, and a gun-wielding customer who tries to stop the robbery kill each other, and Buck escapes with the money the thief had stuffed in a paper bag. He uses it to finance his store and becomes a successful businessman. Now addicted to cocaine and methamphetamine, Dirk finds it increasingly difficult to achieve an erection and frequently falls into violent mood swings. He has a falling out with Jack during a film shoot, and he and Reed decide to pursue their dream of rock and roll stardom, a move supported by Scotty, a gay, nebbishy boom operator who adores and emulates Dirk.
Their addictions lead them to squander all their money, leaving them unable to pay the recording studio for their demo tapes. Dirk tries to prostitute himself with a man but is assaulted by a gang of thugs. Dirk, Reed, and their friend Todd attempt to scam Rahad Jackson by selling him a half-kilo of baking soda disguised as cocaine for $5,000, and Todd is killed in an ensuing gunfight. Frightened by his brush with death and weary of his wasteful existence, Dirk reconciles with Jack and returns to the adult film industry.

Synopsis: "The Mechanic," which opened yesterday at the Victoria and other theaters, is about Arthur Bishop (Charles Bronson), a cool professional killer who lives in lonely splendor in the Hollywood hills, with a pool in his living room and an ache in his heart. Although Arthur is a genius at planning the accidental deaths of others (including an old associate, on whom a contract has been let), and although he spends a lot of time keeping fit (jogging, handball, karate, flying a plane), something is awfully wrong in Arthur's life.
He suffers such fits of acute anxiety that he sometimes faints, and he can make it with his call-girl friend only when she creates elaborate fantasies about his sex appeal. Arthur even looks funny: he has the face and physique of a man of 50 who takes immense care of himself, but his hair is of a blackness and a consistency that suggest that Arthur—for the sake of vanity—dunks it in pitch.
There are indications in Lewis John Carlino's screenplay that this effect is intentional, that "The Mechanic" is meant to be something more than the solemn, rather spurious action melodrama that Michael Winner, the director, has made of it.
The center of the film is the relationship between Arthur and the rich young punk Steve (Jan-Michael Vincent), whom Arthur takes on as his apprentice—with not too surprising results. However, while Carlino's screenplay suggests a fatal fatherson rivalry between the pair, and sort of hints at a latent homosexual bond, the film that Winner has directed is one of non-stop, mostly irrelevant physical spectacle, of complicated chases (in automobiles, on motorcycles), of shootouts, and of various explosions (buildings, cars, yachts). It's quite possible the same movie could have been put together by the special effects men and the stunt coordinators.
Because Winner, an Englishman whose first Hollywood-based film this is, is the sort of director who can never resist a flashy effect, no matter what it does to the point of the film, I found myself even mistrusting the décor in "The Mechanic."
Is that over-designed, over-decorated house of Arthur's really meant to be as failed-Playboy as it seems, or is it supposed to be chic? For that matter, is Arthur supposed to look grotesque, like an aging Hollywood agent, in his fancy bell-bottoms and leather jackets, or is this a mark of his hipness?

Born and raised in Caracas, Miranda was the son of a wealthy merchant from the Canary Islands, a province of Spain. He traveled throughout Europe, becoming a social sensation and garnering support for the independence of Spanish America. He had made friends with many important leaders and political figures throughout Europe, such as British Prime Minister William Pitt. Some claim he even had an affair with Catherine the Great of Russia, although this is improbable and unconfirmed (there was a large age difference). Miranda took part in military operations in the three continents: Africa, Europe and America, and played an important role in some of the great historical events of the time. In the American Revolutionary War, he commanded Spanish troops aiding American insurgents in Florida and Mississippi. While in the U.S. he met with George Washington, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton, among others. He had a home in London where he married a British lady and had two children. Earlier, in middle of the French Revolution, he served France as an important general. His name is engraved on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. His greatest contribution is probably in the independence struggle for the liberation of the colonies in Spanish America.

Synopsis: The Emerald Forest is based on a true story, as related by Los Angeles Times correspondent Leonard Greenwood. Powers Boothe stars as Bill Markham, a US engineer working on a dam project in the Amazonian jungles. Bill's young son, Tomme (played by director John Boorman's son Charley Boorman) is kidnapped in the rain forest by a tribe called "The Invisible People" because of their skills at camouflage - a group that has reportedly never experienced contact with Caucasians. The authorities give up the boy for lost, but Bill perseveres in searching for his son, for over 10 years. While fleeing for his life from The Fierce People - enemies of The Invisible People - he's rescued at the last minute by Tomme, now an adoptee of The Invisible People's chief. To Bill's frustration, Tomme initially refuses to join his biological dad and return to civilization, but when The Fierce People swing in and abduct all of the women in the Invisible People tribe, Tomme seeks his dad's help in rescuing them.

Amer Atrash, a Los Angeles fashion designer who took a karmic wrong turn 15 years ago tries to engineer redemption, with surprising results. The designer , perpetually on the verge of success, is undergoing a personal crisis in both his marriage and his business. Attributing his misfortune to bad karma from a wrongdoing committed fifteen years prior, he sets out to correct his mistake, and in doing so, experiences a spiritual awakening.

Synopsis: Philippe Caland, whose previous claim to fame was making a movie (“Hollywood Buddha”) about his inability to sell an earlier movie (“Dead Girl”), somehow persuaded a few respectable stars to sign on to his latest project, “Ripple Effect.” But there’s only so much they can do with his script, which starts with a not-very-original insight and takes too many shortcuts delivering it. Mr. Caland plays Amer, a fashion designer whose business is going badly and whose wife (Virginia Madsen) is sad and whiny. Amer decides that all this bad karma is emanating from a car accident 15 years earlier in which he struck a pedestrian, who ended up in a wheelchair.
So he seeks out the man (Forest Whitaker), whose hot wife (Minnie Driver) picks up men with her husband’s permission. Some hidden truths about the accident come out, as does Mr. Caland’s point, which is of the butterfly-flaps-its-wings variety: events and the people involved in them are linked to other events in cosmic ways, or something like that.
Mr. Whitaker gives a fully committed performance but is forced to spout a lot of airy semi-spiritual gunk. Ms. Driver has the film’s best moment, delivering a convincing tirade when she learns that her husband and the man who left him unable to walk have become friends.

Synopsis: The gritty underbelly of New York's complex, ethnically divided criminal world is exposed in this dark drama from director Abel Ferrara. Christopher Walken stars as Frank White, a drug lord who's just been released from a long stint in prison. Aware that feeding off of society's depravity has made him a wealthy man, Frank has become determined to give something back to the city, and he hatches a scheme to build a multimillion-dollar public hospital in one of Brooklyn's worst ghetto neighborhoods. Needing the assistance of his fellow criminals to pull it off, Frank and his adjutant Jimmy Jump (Laurence Fishburne) encounter a wall of resistance from every faction, including drug-trade partner Lance Wong (Joey Chin) and temperamental cop Dennis Gilley (David Caruso). Frank's do-gooder efforts ultimately result in a Mob war and in a bloody showdown between the city's various ethnic criminal actions. Ferrara followed King of New York with a similarly themed film that many critics considered his masterpiece, Bad Lieutenant (1992).

Just a personal note: One of the characters in this movie, an African American dude that plays a sidekick criminal of Lawrence Fishburne had his "big Hollywood break" in this movie. At the time that the film came out to the theaters New York Police Department arrested the actor and accused him of several hold ups at small grocery stores in the 8th Avenue and fashion District areas. I used to shop at night in one of the robbed stores... the character played a real life role, amazing, isn't it?

The sketches center around the core story of the dread pirate Yellowbeard's quest for a fabulous treasure, the map for which is tattooed on the head of his prissy son, who wants nothing to do with ships and pirate shenanigans. Fanfan la Tulipe enlists in the army of King Louis XV to escape being forced into marrying a peasant girl. The recruiting sergeant's daughter, Adeline, pretending to be a gypsy girl, has deceived Fanfan by foretelling that he will marry the King's daughter. It looks as if the false prophesy will come true when Fanfan saves the royal princess when her coach is attacked by bandits. Later, when he becomes tired of army exercises, Fanfan deserts and breaks into the royal palace, determined to see the King's daughter. He is captured and sentenced to death, but pardoned at the last minute. Aware that she is in love with Fanfan, the King summons Adeline to his palace and demands a small gesture of gratitude for sparing his life. Adeline refuses and flees. Furious, the King demands that she be recaptured. Only one man can save her - Fanfan la Tulipe!

On October 9th, 1963, at 10:39 pm, 260 million cubic meters of rock fell down from Mount Toc to the artificial lake formed by the Vajont dam, the higher dam in the world. The landslide formed a 250-meters wave and 50 million cubic meters of water completely destroied all the below towns, killing more than 2000 people. Planned by engineer Semenza, Vajont dam (263 meters) had to carry the electricity in all the houses of the country. Tina Merlin, a journalist from "L'Unitá", tried for years to denounce the danger to build a dam near the Mount Toc and expecially to denounce all the omissions by the corrupted politicians and workers in charge of the dam construction. They preferred to trust in old geologist Dal Piaz instead to hear engineer Semenza young son's alarming analysis. No one seemed to understand the high danger until that October fatal night.

Matias' son Percy (Julian Legaspi) is involved in an ongoing fishing dispute with 'poachers' in the waters off the village, but he gradually notices that his 'stepmother' has matured into a beautiful and desirable woman and he, too, observes and covets her while she sleeps. When Natalia discovers that her husband has carnal desires she is terrified and in her usual fashion, confesses to the priest Padre Esteban (Jorge Chiarella) who says it is her obligation to her husband and to God to consummate her marriage.
Enter Padre Santiago, a young handsome priest who comes to the town to replace the retiring Padre Esteban. Physically attracted to the new Padre Santiago, Natalia readdresses her concerns about her husband's advances to Padre Santiago in confession. Padre Santiago reassures her that her body is her own and she may say no if she wishes. This new-found confidence releases Natalia's emotional responses and before long she desires Santiago and they begin an affair despite Padre Santiago's extreme guilt at both breaking his own vow of abstinence and commiting adultery with the Mayor's wife.
Percy hears the town gossip of the possible affair, and after watching the two lovers in bed and warns his father of Natalia's indiscretion. Matias is enraged, throws Percy out of his home, and confronts Natalia and Santiago. During the confrontation Matias is devastated and pleads with Natalia to help him commit suicide and in the insuing rush of emotions Natalia does stab Matias. Both Natalia and her priest lover are convinced that what has happened is not wrong and they dispose of the corpse.
How the town, the church, the family, the couple, and the local police cope with this disintegration of all values is the complex way the movie ends.
The story is well written by Giovanna Pollarolo ('Ojos que no ven', 'Panteleon y las visitadores', 'Cuidad de M', et al) and sensitively directed by Luis Barrios. The level of acting is very fine, especially that of the tortured Paul Vega and the vulnerable Gianella Neyra. The love scenes are provocative with being vulgar and the religious mood of the town is beautifully felt. This is yet another fine Peruvian film, well worth wide attention.

The General is perhaps Buster Keaton's finest film and shows the great comic of the silent era at the height of his powers. Keaton's talent lay in his slapstick ability and his famous stoney face expression which he gave at moments of great confusion. Currently much of his work is being re-appreciated at the true extent of his comic genius re-evalued. Unfortunately for Keaton's career, after the introduction of sound, no one was interested in his comic abilities anymore.

Well the newly restored MK2 DVD (MK2, September 2004) will not disappoint. No more sepia tones and the image is as sharp as ever been available on DVD - tack onto that an original score by Joe Hisaishi. For Keaton fans this is the one! DVD Beaver

Buster Keaton plays Johnny Gray, a Southern railroad engineer who loves his train engine, The General, almost as much as he loves Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack). When the opening shots of the Civil War are fired at Fort Sumter, Johnny tries to enlist -- and he is deemed too useful as an engineer to be a soldier. All Johnny knows is that he's been rejected, and Annabelle, thinking him a coward, turns her back on him. When Northern spies steal the General (and, unwittingly, Annabelle), the story switches from drama and romance to adventure mixed with Keaton's trademark deadpan humor as he uses every means possible to catch up to the General, thwart the Yankees, and rescue his darling Annabelle -- for starters. As always, Keaton performs his own stunts, combining his prodigious dexterity, impeccable comic timing, and expressive body language to convey more emotion than the stars of any of the talkies that were soon to dominate cinema.
