O Auto da Compadecida – The Act of the Pitiful One (was written by Ariano Suassuna in the year 1959 (Suassuna is a well known and célèbre Brazilian author, born in João Pessoa, Paraíba, Northeast Brazil in 1927) and got this movie version in 2000. It’s a comedy about life in small town in Northeast region, centered in very funny and smart trump – João Grilo – and his friend Chicó, always questioning the authorities, having problems and finding brilliant and unthinkable solutions. For instance, in my opinion, the peak of the book (and the movie as well) happens when João Grilo, “dies” – or so he dreams - together with almost all cast of major actors. All of them are presented in a kind of Court of Law presided by Jesus Jesus ( incidentally: Jesus is played by Luís Melo, a very talented and sympathetic Afro-Brazilian actor ). The Devil presents his case: they have all (The Bishop, The Priest, The Cangaceiro, The Bakery Owner, His Wife and so forth) done terrible things and many mistakes and therefore, are about to go to hell. BUT, João Grilo has an appeal to make in a poem he knew from childhood: “Valei-me Nossa Senhora, Mãe de Deus… “; this means something like : “Help out here, Dear Mary, Mother of God…”. At this very moment a bright light brings to the Court, the “Compadecida”, the “Pitiful”, “Merciful” one.

She replies promptly to João Grilo’s request and point’s out the weaknesses of humans and the highest values of forgiveness. The Devil becomes upset but the final decision is that they deserve another chance. They cannot enter paradise – maybe only João Grilo… - but they are allowed to go back to Earth in order to try again, to rectify their mistakes.

It’s a real funny story and full of Brazilian values (both positive and negative ones). Hope you enjoy and maybe can teach me how to make the subtitle fit the rhythm of the movie. I’ve attached two: one I’ve made using SubRip (a very good OCR software to do so) and another I’ve grabbed from the web. Both are not synchronized yet. It’s the best I can do right now. If you could try and teach me, like João Grilo, I swear: sometimes I learn real fast!

PLOT

Chow plays a man who lives in a partly demolished house and who takes in a homeless boy (who is actually played by a girl, Xu Jiao).

As Chow’s character can’t afford to buy a toy for the child, he finds a makeshift toy in the garbage and brings it back to his “son”. The toy is actually an alien and other aliens are desperate to get it back.

Stephen Chow Sing-Chi, is a scriptwriter, film director and actor in many blockbuster movies in Hong Kong and is considered to be one of the finest Hong Kong screen comedians. He was responsible for many popular hits including “Shaolin Soccer” (2001) and “Kung Fu Hustle” (2004), which were both applauded in the West.

From the looks of the trailer, CJ7 seems to adopt alot of CGI, but judging by the wacky physical entertainment of Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle, may work quite well with Stephen’s brand of humour.

This movie balances just the right amounts of action and toungue-in-cheek humor, with great production values and a superb score by Jerry Goldsmith.

Our Man Flint is pure escapism and a good investment if you can find it. James Coburn is no longer with us, and like any great work of art Our Man Flint is even more valuable now that the artist has died.

Anwar (2007) - Manish Jha

Anwar is a Muslim who lives a middle-class lifestyle in Lucknow, India, along with his mom, brother, and Bhabhi, Suraiya. Anwar is doing a research on ancient Hindu Mandirs. They rent out a room to a poor widow and her attractive daughter, Mehru. Anwar falls in love with her. Anwar is certain of Mehru's love for him, but is shocked when he finds out that she has eloped with Udit, his Hindu friend, who is about to immigrate to America. He informs her mother, who in turn calls upon her nephew and other kith and kin, to locate Mehru. They do locate the couple abroad a bus, Udit is killed, while Mehru is beaten and ultimately hangs herself. A guilt-ridden Anwar takes shelter in an ancient Mandit in Dholpur and his bag, which contained drawings of Mandirs and notes on 'Lord Krishna', 'Devi Maa Meera', and 'Mehru'. This bag ends up with the Police and they believe that Anwar is a terrorist who is planning to detonate bombs in sacred Hindu temples. The place is surrounded by Police, politicians who are anxious to win the Hindu vote, the media, and a huge crowd who are here to see the show. Anwar contemplates his life and gets visits from 3 people. The first is an extremist Imam, who tells him to kill himself rather than surrender; the second is Police Superintendent Ashok Tiwari, who wants him to surrender quickly so that he can be with his ailing wife and young daughter; and the third is media-person, Anita, who wants a live interview so that she can establish her credibility with her boss. Set amongst post 9-11 scenario, amidst the craze for Valentine's day, Britney Spears, Osama Bin Laden, George W. Bush, and the American way of life, Anwar must now examine his options - the question is what will he ultimately decide?

IMDB comment: This isn't your typical Indian film when a girl and a boy fall in love through a series of songs, and the parents forbid it until during a teary dramatic speech they accept the fact they belong together, no. This story ventures out of the lives of certain people, of what would really happen not only the imagination of the producers or directors. I, myself am not a Bollywood fan because of its excess of love films, but this film was different, I'm sure anyone would love it. It makes you cry, smile, laugh, and surprised about the outcomes. Some of the actresses and actors who lost their popularity in the film businesses are sure to regain it after lots view this film. The music matched perfectly with this movie, it's melody was sweet and beautiful. I recommend everyone to see this!

Synopsis:

Matrubhoomi will come across as a shocker to those traditional Indian audiences who have grown up on the staple diet of sugar-coated romances and feel-good/sunshine/escapist cinema. You ought to have a strong stomach to absorb a film like Matrubhoomi.

The film explores a futuristic rural India wherein due to rampant female infanticide, women are practically extinct. The impact of the absence of women on men sees them finding alternative sources of release - pornography, homosexuality, bestiality, violence, the works. When a girl, Kalki (Tulip Joshi) is actually spied, she is promptly sold and married to five brothers. All five - and the father-in-law-exercise their conjugal rights in turn. She starts getting closer to the youngest brother (Sushant Singh), the only one who treats her like a human being, much to the chagrin of the father and other brothers.

One of the films featured in the most recent Human Rights Watch annual film festival, this is a somber, understated, yet relentlessly compelling documentary about the hundreds of unsolved murders of women that have occurred over the past 10 years in Cuidad Juarez, the Mexican border city across the Rio Grande from El Paso. Portillo, a veteran documentarist from Mexico who focuses her work on women, interviews surviving relatives and a woman who was raped by police and later shown photos of their apparent involvement in ritual sadistic sexual group rape-killings of women. Portillo also presents the chronology of the wave of murders, beginning in 1993, including televised comments by several government officials, an account of various suspects arrested and detained, and segments of an interview with a federally appointed criminal justice official heading a task force to seek suspects. She mixes this material effectively with footage of the streets of Juarez and still photos of a number of the deceased victims. It is known that many of the victims were young poor women who came to Juarez to work in the maquilladora factories. Detention of multiple suspects has not stopped the killings. Since the film was completed these crimes have continued and apparently no new arrests have been made. Several confessions have occurred but some of these are strongly rumored to have been made under torture. For the first time, just this year, an official federal count of the number of killings has been announced: 258, including 20 or more since 2001. What Portillo does not make clear is that roughly 90 of the killing fit the profile of young dark skinned girls who were raped and then killed. The rest -a majority - did not involve rape and the victims, all women, were of more varied characteristics. Suggested links of the crimes have been made to drug traffickers, human organ smugglers and sadistic cultists. Portillo strongly implies that high level government officials are duplicitous in the problem. This certainly seems likely in view of the fact that sites where bodies were found and other evidence was contaminated or discarded in virtually all cases, making reasonable forensic analysis impossible (you think they'd get it right after the first hundred or so); there has been no serious, sustained effort at any level to upgrade the sophistication of investigations; and local police implicated in some of the crimes have not been indicted to date. Although an American sexual criminal profiler suggested several years ago that someone from the U.S. could be a perpetrator of at least some of these crimes, there has been no followup on that idea. What about a motive? Border towns thrive on illicit activities that make money. The sheer volume of these cases, their steady occurrence over 10 years, the macabre nature of some of the killings - i.e., peculiar mutilations of the bodies, the implied connections to organized crime, and the confinement of the murders to a border city, makes one wonder about the possibility that some of these cases might represent an extreme form of "sex tourism": a business in which wealthy sexual sadists from the U.S. or elsewhere might be entering Juarez and paying high fees to witness or take part in group rape/murders.

'Heat' is a parody of 'Sunset Boulevard'. The McKenzie Break is an unusual POW escape drama in that the would-be escapees are German prisoners, held in a Scottish camp. When a Luftwaffe pilot is murdered in the compound, British major Ian Hendrey investigates. He suspects that the killing is tied in with a complex escape plan, engineered by German commander Helmut Griem. Before the inevitable break, the prisoners form into the sort of separate factions and pressure groups that fomented the Nazi upheaval in Germany in the first place. Based on a novel by Sidney Shelley, The McKenzie Break was actually filmed in Ireland rather than Scotland.

Description: Kino on Video, with Filmmuseum Müenchen, has done the right thing for film history in issuing three DVDs billed as "Gay-Themed Films of the German Silent Era." They vary in artistry, but as documents of society and its values, their value is immeasurable. Richard Oswald's Different from the Others (1919) may be the oldest "gay movie" of feature length in existence. Carl Theodor Dreyer's Michael (1924) offers a look at a rare silent work of one of the cinema's leading directors. And William Dieterle's Sex in Chains (1928) has a candid story of prison love, a subject that would be taboo for years to come.
Different from the Others is the most rewarding of the three new old relics of Weimarian queer cinema. Michael and Sex in Chains portray homosexuality circuitously, through art and incarceration, respectively. Different from the Others, as the name implies, addresses same-sex love with the head-on commitment of a speeding bus. The result is a template of a century's worth of gay stereotyping, politics, family relations, history, relationships, and medicine.
Different from the Others is an altogether fascinating spectacle. By way of latent pride, we're introduced to Leonardo, Tchaikovsky, and Wilde. We see a gay bar populated by swishing men and butch women. As concert pianist Paul Körner, thin and pale Conrad Veidt assumes effeminate poses suggesting one of nature's intermediary sexes, but the point of his essential nature is not lost. Just as his romance with a student catches fire, he is threatened with blackmail. Germany's notorious anti-gay Paragraph 175 promises to ruin him.
It's a pity that Different from the Others doesn't survive in total. Huge chunks of narrative are supplied by modern intertitles and still photos. Considering that Different from the Others was banned soon after its release, and the Nazis believed they had destroyed all existing prints and negatives, the survival of any footage is something of a miracle. Indeed, Oswald's 1927 remake, The Laws of Love, is believed to be entirely lost.
Of course Different from the Others heaves under passé acting styles and over-applied make-up, but its unveiling of ill-fated love amidst intolerance is all too plausible and contemporary. But even that asset can't compete with its unimpeachable historic value. Any movie that features psychologist and early gay liberationist Magnus Hirschfeld playing himself and propagandizing on history, sexual orientation, and gender roles deserves the highest priority for restoration and preservation. Different from the Others' outrage at political and social injustice is as confrontational and compassionate as anything produced on film in the intervening decades.
Adapted from a 1902 novel and the myth of Jupiter and Ganymede, Michael is foremost a pretty movie, lit with great care to create a silvery aura of long-ago exoticism. Visual artist Zoret (Benjamin Christensen) adores his protégé Michael (Walter Slezak), but complications arise when the Princess Zamikoff (Nora Gregor) comes between them. Michael is a movie of few incidents, languid and tableauesque. It has an admirable engagement with art and creativity, while the homosexual content is subdued. In fact, according to the arid but informative commentary of film historian Casper Tybjerg, some choose not to see any erotic subtext. That strikes me as silly. If the Master's obsession with Michael isn't carnal, the plot veers into meaninglessness. The presence of the Countess works only in the context of her compromising an already charged relationship between the two men.
Michael was directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, a man guaranteed a place in the film pantheon with The Passion of Joan of Arc. Unlike that masterpiece, Michael is not altogether satisfying dramatically. It relies on being visually sumptuous, while the characters remain distant. But it is the progenitor of a familiar genre of shame — the unrequited gay love story in which someone fatally crashes upon the rocky shores of passion. The survivor lands safely in heterosexualand, thereby reminding us of the sorry condition of the lavender male in movie history.
Sex in Chains (1928) was directed by and starred William Dieterle, who later made his name in Hollywood directing The Life of Emile Zola, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Portrait of Jennie. Sex in Chains is far removed from the rose-color sensibility of Production Code Hollywood; it dared to confront prison homosexuality. In fact, we're told so in the first intertitle, so we may gird ourselves for a dose of realism. Not that Sex in Chains couldn't have benefitted from higher production values. Though four years younger, it is visually more crude and less adventurous than the shimmering Michael. The acting, too, has too many moments of bug-eyed melodrama, and the score by Pasquale Perris is stultifying and generic. At times Sex in Chains looks amateurish, but then it surprises with a lyrical close-up or jump cut.
Sex in Chains is a braver and more honest prison movie than so many that came in its wake. It had the guts to treat what Midnight Express wouldn't touch 50 years later: that men behind bars have sex with each other and even fall in love. Life may be miserable for those on the outside, too. Lovely Mary Johnson as the wife of inmate Dieterle has her own case of sexual deprivation as she surrenders to the advances of her kindly but unappealing boss.
Sex in ChainsSex in Chains (such a lurid title!) is worth seeing because of its content, not its artistry. The restoration is watchable, but print scratches remain and faces are occasionally washed out to the point of being unidentifiable. But like Different from the Others and Michael, it could so easily have been dust by now. The once censured Sex in Chains was another unlikely survivor of World War II, and for that we may give thanks.

Description: It's difficult to make an accurate assessment of this film because it's incomplete. In fact, it's far from complete. Still, from the pieces of what is left we can see that "Passenger" may well have turned out to be a masterpiece. Like Jean Vigo, Andrzej Munk was considered a cinematic genius who died too soon (in a car crash in 1961). Munk is less well known than Vigo but he is still important, especially in the development of Polish film. "Passenger" is the story of a German woman on a cruise-liner who catches a glimpse of who she believes to be a Jewish girl she was in charge of at a concentration camp during the war. She recounts to her husband in flashback the story of how she tried to protect the girl from her vicious captors. Later on though, in another flashback, we see what really happened: the woman was not the girl's protector, but a sadist who relished her position of authority and her control over the lives of the prisoners she guarded. The cruise-liner scenes are all done using still shots with a narrator (or, the "restorer" of the film) trying to decipher how exactly Munk intended to piece the film together, while the flashback scenes are actual moving images, shot in fine black and white widescreen compositions. As the "narrator" tries to understand the film, what it would have become, so do we as viewers. In this way the film itself becomes perhaps even more labyrinthine than it would have been had Munk completed it, and we have an added level of mystery that is as frustrating as it is exciting. The incomplete film entices us to guess how it would have turned out, and while its certainly not a substitute for the completed film, this fragmented "Passenger" is brilliant and tantalizing nonetheless.

THE MISSOURI BREAKS is another vivid anti-western from Penn. Like LITTLE BIG MAN, this film takes a hard look at what life was like in the wild West, keeping the characters real and the story intense. Marlon Brando gives an unnerving performance as the insane bounty hunter, and Nicholson is sympathetic as the young but wearied cattle rustler who is in love with his enemy's daughter. The production overcame many difficulties with weather and locations to create an entertaining Hollywood epic.

I am filming Chechen children in Ingushetia, in the family of Xhadizhat Gataeva, which now consists of 75 orphans for whom Xhadizhat has vowed to act as mother. She has brought them together from the ruins of a devastated Grozny. All of their parents were killed by the Russians.

Beauty and Terror Abide for People Caught in War

The acrid fog of war is palpable in Pirjo Honkasalo's magnificent documentary, "The 3 Rooms of Melancholia," one of the saddest films ever made. The movie, which opens today in New York, is evidence that when a director-cinematographer with a poet's vision photographs the material world, ordinary human faces and landscapes can leave impressions that transcend any words that might describe them.
As the film journeys from a boys' military school on an island outside St. Petersburg, Russia, to Grozny, the ruined capital city of Chechnya, to an orphanage just over the Chechen border in the republic of Ingushetia, a sullen mist hangs over everything. That haze becomes a profound metaphor for the unknown into which humanity anxiously peers, searching for beauty but often finding terror.
Beauty and terror are the inextricable polarities of Ms. Honkasalo's meditation on people caught up in war. Over the rolling pastoral landscape of Ingushetia, the rumble of combat just across the mountains groans in the distance like an unseen, gathering storm. At the thud of a distant explosion, a horse pricks up its ears and turns its head; inside an orphanage, a child recently rescued from Grozny hears the sounds, stares into the void and bottles up his fear. But the pictures of horses, shepherds and grazing livestock, and of children's immobile faces, also evoke the continuity of nature and the persistence of hope; life will go on.
A brooding score by the Finnish composer Sanna Salmenkallio infuses these images with an ineffable sorrow. The somber mood is echoed by the filmmaker's view of European history, expressed in the production notes. "Justice does not prevail, life does," writes Ms. Honkasalo, best known for her documentaries "The Trilogy of the Sacred and the Satanic" and "Fire-Eater." "It rises out of chaos in an ascending spiral, briefly appears to have a structure, and descends in the curve of a downward spiral toward fresh chaos."
"The 3 Rooms of Melancholia" is divided into chapters titled "Longing," "Breathing" and "Remembering." In the first, we visit a military academy in Kronstadt, an island near St. Petersburg in the Gulf of Finland, where several hundred young, mostly preadolescent cadets endure months of rigorous training. This is tomorrow's Russian army, which may or may not be dispatched to the killing fields of Chechyna where some of the fathers of these soldiers-in-training lost their lives.
A narrator introduces several boys and sketches their family backgrounds in the starkest terms. These tales suggest that a significant portion of Russia's future army will be made up of orphaned and discarded children, many the progeny of alcoholics, prostitutes and broken homes. Much of their training is devoted to endless drills in which they tramp through the snow in formation in modified goose step; the tiniest errors of dress and body language are coldly scrutinized and corrected. Even the boys' play is militarized; a snowball fight is organized as a war game.
Part 2, "Breathing," goes to Grozny, a city reduced to rubble. Some residents, however, have remained. A woman living near the top of a bombed-out high-rise hoists a bucket of water many stories through a window. Another lies gravely ill from water contaminated by oil, her three scared, weeping children clinging to her. Stray dogs scavenge the ruins.
A brave Chechen woman, Hadizhat Gataeva, knocks on the apartment door where the poisoned woman lives and gently pries her children away from their mother so they can be transported to safety across the border.
The last part of the film visits the orphanage where the children are sheltered and fed and where the adults gather to chant prayers. The narrator again sketches only the barest details of their histories. We meet Aslan, an 11-year-old boy who was found in a cardboard box, who lost much of his memory (he believes he's Chechen but may be Russian) after being sexually abused by Russian soldiers. Another boy, Adam, nearly died when his mother tried to throw him off a ninth-floor balcony after her husband was killed in the first Chechen war. Milana, 19, was raped by three Russian soldiers when she was only 12.
Although tears are shed in "The 3 Rooms of Melancholia," the film mostly lets its images speak for themselves. More affecting than any displays of emotion is the prevailing attitude of stoicism and endurance in the face of suffering. The film is a requiem for the living as well as for the dead.

Melancholia and the infinite sadness: Meditative Chechnya doc sidesteps the realities of war

Gaining invaluable political cover from both the war in Iraq and the actions of a Chechen extremist minority, the Russian government's brutal military campaign against the oil-rich Caucasian province's separatist insurgency has found an ideological home in Bush's vaguely conceived war on terror. Deliberately paced and suffused with mysticism, Finnish director Pirjo Honkasalo's documentary mood piece The 3 Rooms of Melancholia takes a tripartite look at the consequences of Putin's dirty war for children on both sides of the conflict.
Distanced in more ways than one, the movie opens thousands of miles away on the "fortress island" of Kronstadt, site of a Russian military school for kids as young as nine. The brief second segment takes place in the Chechen capital of Grozny, where a woman named Hadizhat collects the children of dead and dying parents. Some of her orphans appear in the landscape-fixated third section, residents of refugee camps located in the nearby autonomous republic of Ingushetia.
Willfully esoteric, 3 Rooms proceeds in the hushed tones of a guided tour through a medieval cathedral—even the academy's military instructors are surprisingly muted (anyone hoping to see a D.I. go all Lee Ermey on the cadets will leave disappointed). Sparse narration dispassionately sketches the horrific circumstances of the kids' lives (nearly all, cadets and refugees alike, were orphaned by the war). Aside from the stark black-and-white of the middle section, the whole movie's rendered in somber Rembrandt hues. By the nearly wordless final third, dominated by a mysterious religious rite that parallels an earlier academy chapel service (one of many subtle rhymes between segments), the funereal mood has imperceptibly morphed into an animistic trance.
War is hell, violence begets violence, hatred is passed on to future generations, etc., etc. Each section is more aestheticized than the last, a strategy not without its virtues; one shudders at the thought of this subject—orphaned children in wartime—falling into the wrong hands. Nevertheless 3 Rooms relies excessively on languid shots of kids' blank-slate faces, and despite frequent sidelong references to past atrocities, frustratingly little here grapples with the day-to-day realities of life in Chechnya and the surrounding areas. The most politically resonant moments are context-free bits of nightmare logic: "The oil wells will kill you," one character says; another shot lingers on a sign in a school corridor that reads, "Don't gossip near a phone. A talking head is treasure for a spy"—an injection of Stalin-era paranoia that feels all too timely.
Such poetic asides notwithstanding, Honkasalo's self-consciously high-art approach seems likely, at least for American audiences, to render an already remote conflict even stranger and more exotic. Production on 3 Rooms came to a premature halt in the fall of 2003, when the war began spilling over into Ingushetia, but that sense of danger and chaos is systematically excluded from the finished film. This is the kind of movie that attracts adjectives like "rarefied" and "meditative." It's beautifully shot and was made with undeniable intelligence (and at some physical risk to the filmmakers). Still, is it unfair to ask if meditation is really an adequate response to war? To suggest that the contemplation of natural beauty here is but an escape from the vicissitudes of human history? Given the sheer number of poorly crafted political docs that have sprung up like weeds over the past couple years, the lack of bleeding-heart sentiment and liberal preachiness comes as a relief. But given the current geopolitical stakes, 3 Rooms also feels like a retreat.

Description:
Plot
The plot is driven by Stirlitz's (ultimately successful) attempts at thwarting negotiations between SS General Karl Wolff, representing Walter Schellenberg and Heinrich Himmler, and American intelligence operative Allen Dulles in Bern, Switzerland during the final months of World War II. The Dulles portrayed in the show, acting without the authorization of the President, is interested in reaching a peace agreement with Nazi Germany that would leave many Nazi institutions in place in order to prevent the rise of "Bolshevism" in Germany and Northern Italy. The negotiations are conducted in secret and behind the back of Hitler and, more importantly for Stirlitz, the Soviet Union. The tension isn't easy since right from the very beginning of the series, Obergruppenführer Ernst Kaltenbrunner opens up an investigation on Stirlitz, led in part by Stirlitz's role in delaying the German atomic research program and his otherwise almost-too-impeccable record of loyalty and devotion to Hitler, even as other German officers had begun to grumble in private about the leadership. There is one scene in the third episode where Stirlitz attends a funeral and sees Kaltenbrunner there, not knowing that Kaltenbrunner is the very man who opened the investigation against him. A man next to Stirlitz fearfully utters Kaltenbrunner's name to him, portraying a powerful climactic moment.
Near the end of the 12-part miniseries, Ernst Kaltenbrunner and Martin Bormann both get together and send the Gestapo to arrest Karl Wolff for his negotiations with the Allies. However, Wolff is saved in the nick of time when Schellenberg intervenes. Upon the arrival of Wolff's plane, Schellenberg stops the Gestapo forces from capturing Wolff and allows for the negotiations to take place.

Seventeen Moments of Spring (1973) ("Семнадцать мгновений весны" in Russian), also Seventeen Instants of Spring is a Soviet TV miniseries. It was filmed at Gorky Film Studio, directed by Tatiana Lioznova and based on the series of books by the novelist Yulian Semyonov. It is divided into 12 episodes, with each part being 70 minutes and the whole series being 840 minutes long.
The series is about the life of Soviet spy Maksim Isaev operating in Nazi Germany under the name Max Otto von Stirlitz, played by the Soviet actor Vyacheslav Tikhonov. Other leading roles were played by Leonid Bronevoy, Oleg Tabakov, Yuri Vizbor, Evgeni Evstigneev, Rostislav Plyatt, Vasily Lanovoy, and Mikhail Zharkovsky.

Historical background
The negotiations between Dulles and Wolff did take place in reality on March 8, 1945, codenamed both Operation Sunrise and Operation Crossword ("Sunrise Crossword" in the film) and Soviet agents supplied information on them to the USSR. One of them was Kim Philby. Another agent of the Soviet Military Intelligence, dubbed as "a fantastic source, who received the first-class information from Germany" by Allen Dulles, was Rudolph Rassler, working in Switzerland during secret negotiations.
Inventing the image of Isaev-Stirlitz, Yulian Semyonov worked with the biographies of well-known Soviet intelligence officers: Lev Manevich, Nikolai Kuznetsov, Sandor Radó. But no one of them became a prototype of the film's main character. Stirlitz is the collective image, in which the author embodied all the best features of the intelligence officer.
Stirlitz is sometimes referred to as a Russian James Bond, even if the comparison is not entirely warranted. Although the show contains some relatively unbelievable elements (i.e. a Russian passing for a German for twenty years) and it may even have served a somewhat similar ideological role as the James Bond films did in the West, Seventeen Moments of Spring is based, even if only loosely, on actual historical events. Moreover, the show also strives for a much more realistic version of foreign espionage than the James Bond films do, with Stirlitz carefully playing on rivalries within the SD and SS, cautiously seeking out friendly contacts, prudently developing alibis for his covert activities and very rarely resorting to force or gadgetry. It also notable that one hardly gets the impression that many of the Nazis were all the incarnation of evil: while there the show does remind the viewer of the horror of Nazi death camp through use of some original footage, one nonetheless finds it hard not to take something of a liking for Mueller and some of Stirlitz' other adversaries.
The music for the movie was written by Armenian-born composer Mikael Tariverdiev.
The series was immensely popular in the Soviet Union and it originated many popular phrases as well as an entire genre of anecdotes, the latter having seemingly taken a life of its own. The show is still frequently aired on Russian television. Plans were discussed to build a monument to Stirlitz in the city of Gorokhovets, his birth place in the series.
A Polish television series with a very similar theme, More Than Life at Stake (Polish: Stawka większa niż życie) (with Captain Kloss being the analogous character to Stirlitz) was made in 1967-1968.

Soundtrack
The main soundtrack to the movie, titled "Mgnovenia" (or "Moments"), was composed by Mikael Tariverdiev and performed by Joseph Kobzon.

Trivia
* The person responsible for extras casting was Jewish and was casting a lot of his friends and relatives in tiny parts. As a result, when the military consultant (from the KGB) saw the chosen actors, he said that most of the guards at Nazi headquarters looked like soldiers of Israeli army, not elite SS soldiers, and demanded that they change them to more appropriate looking actors. As a result, the roles of SS guards were played by military cadets of the frontier-guards schools from Tallinn (Estonia) and Riga (Latvia), who, being tall, blonde and blue-eyed looked more like real SS soldiers.
* The two songs by Édith Piaf, that Stierlitz and Schlag listen to while driving to the border, were actually recorded in the '60s.
* According to Leonid Bronevoy, his tailored uniform shirt was several sizes too small for him, the shirt collar cutting into his neck, making the actor jerk his head. When asked by the film director Tatyana Lioznova on the matter, unwilling to make blame the tailor, the actor said that this was his own way of being nervous. Lioznova then suggested that this should have been featured in the movie in the tensest of scenes.

1. It is 12 February 1945. Standartenfuhrer von Stirlitz, an operative in the SD, the Nazi political intelligence agency, is at a private home on the shore of a lake which he uses for secret rendezvous. He is waiting for an informer to arrive. He hears a nightingale sing and feels sorry for the bird, because he knows that it will freeze to death.
Stirlitz is really a Soviet agent, Colonel Maksim Maksimovich Isaev, who has infiltrated the SD.
Before the Soviets broke through into Cracow in January 1945, the Gestapo had mined the town, intending to destroy it. However, for some reason, the town survived intact. Kaltenbrunner, the Chief of the Reich Security Services, confronts Kruger, Chief of the Gestapo Eastern Department, who had been responsible for destroying Cracow. Kruger bravely accepts full responsibility for the failure, but says he kept Stirlitz--who was in Cracow at the time--fully informed of the details of the operation. After Kruger leaves, Kaltenbrunner orders a review of all the files on Stirlitz.
Stirlitz's informant, Klaus, an agent-provocateur, shows up at the lake-side house and plays a tape of a conversation he had with Pastor Fritz Schlag, a pacifist clergyman the Nazis are trying to entrap. On the tape, Klaus is playing the part of a Communist to whom the Pastor agrees to give refuge. The Pastor also promises help others in the anti-Nazi underground.
The Gestapo has asked to borrow Klaus for a week. Two Russians "pianists" (radio operators) had been caught redhanded in Cologne transmitting a radio message. So far the Russians have said nothing, and the Gestapo hopes Klaus can help. Stirlitz says that Klaus deserves a vacation first. He has Klaus write a note to the effect that he's exhuasted and at the end of his rope and needs a break. Stirlitz then gives Klaus some money and tells him to go to the casinos in Innsbruck.
Klaus and Stirlitz stand together on the edge of the lake. As the Allied bombers fly overhead, Stirlitz shoots Klaus in the temple. The body falls into the water, and Stirlitz tosses the gun in afterward, making it look like suicide.
Kaltenbrenner asks Gestapo Chief Heinrich Müller to discreetly look into Stirlitz for the following reasons: (1) Stirlitz was partly responsible for the failure of the Cracow operation; (2) Stirlitz had been investigating the disappearance of a V2 rocket, but never found it; (3) Stirlitz is in charge of a number of questions relating to the development of the atomic weapon, but has not yet recorded any successes in this area; (4) Stirlitz has not been able to track down a roving Bolshevik transmitter which remains active in Berlin; and (5) while everyone else has criticisms to make about the German war effort and military leaders, only Stirlitz never makes any negative comments.

2. In a meeting in his secret bunker, Hitler rules out a political settlement of the war. The military leaders, however, are more inclinded toward negotiations.
At his home in Babelsburg, not far from Potsdam, Stirlitz tunes into a Moscow radio station, playing old Russian songs. Then the announcer reads a long list of frequencies on which the station can be heard. It is really a coded message for Stirlitz. He uses his copy of Montaigne to decode the message which says that SS and SD officers have been appearing in Stockholm and Switzerland trying to make contact with Allied intelligence agents, particularly members of the staff of Allen Dulles. Stirlitz is ordered to find out if these SS and SD people are acting on orders from Berlin and if so, whose orders in particular.
Goering returns from a trip to the front and reports to Hitler that things there are in complete chaos. "The eyes of the soldiers are quite dazed, and I saw drunken officers. The Bolshevik offensive is striking fear into the army." Hitler angrily refutes him and orders him to never visit the front again.
Later that day, SS chief Himmler comes to visit Goering. Himmler says that Hitler's lost his guts, is incapable of taking decisions and must be replaced. Himmler suggests that Goering become President with Himmler as Chancellor. Goering says, "That's impossible." And fearing that there's a tape recorder in Himmler's brief case, Goering continues in a whisper, "One man will have to be both President and Chancellor."

3. To help himself think, Stirlitz drove around at dangerously high speeds in his Horch automobile. According to Stirliz, flirting with danger facilitated clear thinking.
Stirlitz then drops in on his radio operators, Erwin and Kathe. Kathe is pregnant and Stirlitz is a little worried because, as a gynecologist told him, during labor women cry out in their native tongue, which in Kathe's case is her Ryazan dialect of Russian. Stirlitz suggests evacuating them to Sweden, but they refuse, saying they don't want to leave him alone.
Stirlitz and Erwin then drive out to the woods around Rahnsdorf and set up the radio. They transmit a message back to Moscow, in which Stirlitz says that, with Moscow's permission, he will approach Himmler with some of the information Moscow has given him. Then Himmler, Stirlitz supposes, will put the suspects under observation.
When Moscow receives this message, they immediately give the order that in the next scheduled secret broadcast to Erwin, Stirlitz must be told not to undertake his plan. Moscow knows something about Himmler that Stirlitz doesn't.
Himmler had risen to an almost unassailable position of power, mainly by compiling compromising material on the other Nazi leaders--Hess masturbating, Goebbels dallying with skinny ballerinas of unpure blood, rumors that Bormann was homosexual.
The idea of a negotiated peace with the western Allies was first suggested to Himmler in 1942 by Walter Schellenberg, his deputy for the political intelligence department. The Nazis were so powerful, they could dictate peace terms, Schellenberg said. After all, Bismark always sought out peace when he was at the peak of his glory. Himmler responded that as long as Hitler relied on that idiot Ribbentrop for advice on foreign policy, peace was out of the question.
Then in January 1945--on Bormann's suggestion--Hitler named Himmler commander and chief of the Eastern Front, the so-called Army Group Vistula. Himmler, of course, is dismayed and decides he must start fighting for himself--arrange a peace with the West and then joint action against the Bolsheviks. He had reason to believe that the commmander-in-chief of the troops in Italy, Field Marshal Kesselring, would not object to negotiations with the West. Italy bordered Switzerland, and Switzerland was where you could find Allen Dulles, head of American security.
After dropping off Erwin, Stirlitz is driving home. He is stopped by two motorcycle guards who are searching the area for the rogue radio transmitter. This type of patrol might be able to catch a babe in the woods, but not an experienced operative such as Stirlitz. He offers to let the guards search his car, but they let him pass. Stirlitz thinks it will also be a good idea for him to check out what Albert Speer, Germany's chief industrialist, is up to.

4. Stirlitz always liked to help people who had been arrested on insufficient evidence or on unimportant matters. He would "recruit" then as informers for his SD work and get them released from concentration camps after only a short stay. So it was with Paster Schlag, who not only condemned Nazis, but was also willing to help the underground.
Müller calls Obersturmbannfuhrer Eismann to his office and says he's been ordered on a wild goose chase, that is, the investigation of Stirlitz. Müller admires Stirlitz, who's always calm and does his work without getting hysterical or overzealous. Eismann says he's known Stirlitz for eight years--they were in Smolensk together--and he can vouch for Stirlitz's loyalty. Müller tells Eismann to draw up a favorable report on Stirlitz and to particularly praise his work with Paster Schlag.
Müller then orders another staffer, Obersturmbannfuhrer Holthoff, to look over Stirlitz's work concerning the retaliation weapon--that is, atomic weapon--and the physicist Runge and to let Müller know if anything looks fishy.
Himmler sends Obergruppenfuhrer Karl Wolff, a trusted SS veteran, an a secret mission to Switzerland, to establish contact with Allen Dulles. Himmler and Schellenberg then meet to concoct ways of protecting themselves if this treachery is found out. Firstly, they can blame Kesselring, who, technically, is Wolff's superior. Also, they plan to send some of their own men to tail Wolff, so they can claim they claim that they themselves were working to expose the traitor. For this job, Schellenberg plans to use Stirlitz and the Pastor.

5. The next morning, Stirlitz drives to Erwin and Kathe's to learn Moscow's response to his message. But during the night, Allied bombers hit their neighborhood, and Erwin and Kathe's house has been reduced to rubble. No one there knows if they survived. Stirlitz helps a woman with a baby pull a pram through the rubble.
Kathe, who received two head wounds, is in the hospital giving birth to a boy. And, sure enough, during labor she screams out in Russian. The doctor tells the midwife to call the Gestapo.
Stirlitz composes a note to Himmler, telling him about his "suspicions" that someone is trying to arrange contact with the Allies, a crime which is punishable by death.

6. Stirlitz is in the reception area, waiting for his appointment with Himmler. Schellenberg enters and says he has to talk with Stirlitz right away. Schellenberg tells the secretary to reschedule Stirlitz's appointment for later in the day, and Schellengerg and Stirlitz then retire to Schellenberg's office.
Kathe feeds her healthy newborn son in the hospital. A man claiming to be from the insurance company comes to visit her. He tells her that Erwin died in the bombing and asks some insurance-related questions, including the names and addresses of any relatives. She gives the name of Erwin's uncle, Franz Paakenen, living in Stockholm. The man then hands Kathe a photograph of some suitcases found in the neighborhood's rubble and asks if any of them are hers. One of the cases in the photograph is obviously the one in which Erwin kept his wireless radio. Kathe, of course, says she recognizes none of the cases. When he leaves, the man, who is actually a Gestapo agent, immediately sends the photograph to be tested for Kathe's fingerprints. The Gestapo has already tested the wireless radio and found three sets of fingerprints on it.
While Allied bombs rain down outside, Eismann sits in his office and tries to puzzle out why Stirlitz has fallen into disrepute. He reviews the file on this peacenik pastor Schlage, who had been denouced by two of his parishoners for making pacifist sermons. The intelligence authorities found him interesting because in 1933 he had taken two trips abroad--to Great Britain and to Switzerland--to take part in pacifist conferences. He also met ex-Chancellor Bruning, who had since emigrated and was now living in Switzerland.
Eismann decides to listen to a recording of Stirlitz's interrogation of the Pastor, which took place on 29 September 1944. On the recording, Stirlitz tries to convince the Pastor of the correctness of National Socialism, but the Pastor isn't buying it. The Pastor opposes the violence of the regime, but he himself would never use violence to oppose it (bombs, assassination, etc.) because that would make him as bad as the Nazi. Stirlitz asks, as a hypothetical, what the Pastor would do if the anti-Nazi underground asked him to act as a go-between, taking a letter to, say, Britain, Russia, Sweden, or Switzerland. The Pastor says he would undertake such a mission as long as it leads to good and involves only upright means.

7. Schellenberg tells Stirlitz about his plans for Stirlitz and the Pastor concerning Wolff. Stirlitz feels the violent urge to immediately burn his memo to Himmler which is in his briefcase. Stirlitz knows that he barely avoided disaster.
Later, Bormann receives an anonymous letter from someone in the SD who says he has information on traitors who are trying to make contact with the West. If Bormann is interested, he is instructed to go to the front of the Neues Tor hotel next to the Natural History Museum tomorrow at 1 PM.
Eismann listens to more of the tape of the Pastor and Stirlitz. Stirlitz tells the Pastor that he will release him from prison if the Pastor agrees that, whenever Stirlitz may want it, he will talk to scientists, party workers, journalists, etc., and report to Stirlitz on the degree of good or evil he finds in them. The Pastor is suspicious that it is a provocation.
Hitler sends an order for Kruger in Prague, directing him to destroy all transport, communications, industrial enterprises, etc., in the face of the enemy advance. Kaltenbrunner tells Müller to make sure that Kruger doesn't screw up like he did last time.
8. It was Stirlitz who sent the anonymous note to Bormann. Before leaving for the rendezvous, Stirlitz has his secretary send a note to Klaus arranging a meeting at the Natural History Museum, which is right next to the Neues Tor Hotel. This gives Stirlitz an excuse to be there and also provides him with an alibi for Klaus's death, which nobody knows about yet.
As Stirlitz drives to the hotel, he notices someone following him. He speeds up and loses the pursuer.
Stirlitz goes into the Natural History museum and pretends to study the exhibits, while really looking out the window at the front of the Neues Tor Hotel. The museum is empty except for a female teacher giving a tour to some school children. Bormann does not show up. He wanted to be there, but got trapped attending an interminable speech by Hitler.
Stirlitz reports to Schellenberg that he was followed, either by criminals or Müller's men. Schellenberg phones Müller who confirms that his agents were following Stirlitz, but says it was an accident...they were looking for some South American who drives a Horch. But that is a lie. Müller is keeping Stirlitz under surveillance. Even the school teacher in the museum was a spy working for Müller.

9. Wolff's agents in Switzerland manage to make contact with Dulles's agents. Wolff himself is invited for a second meeting. The subject of the meeting is the interest both sides have in preventing establishment of a Communist state in northern Italy.
With no way of contacting Moscow, Stirlitz has to puzzle out a way to contact Soviet citizens in Switzerland. He goes to visit Professor Pleischner former Vice-Chancellor of Kiel University. Pleischner spent some time in detention in Dachau for his anti-Fascist sentiments. Upon his release, a broken man, his brother got him a post working in the Ancient Greece section of the Pergamon Museum. Pleischner is stunned when Stirlitz tells him he's really working for Soviet intelligence. Stirlitz proves it with a letter Pleischner's brother wrote to Stirlitz before his death. Pleischner promises to aid Stirlitz if needed. But, Pleischner adds, if he is caught and tortured, he will reveal everything.

10. Late at night, Stirlitz visits Pastor Shlag. Although the Pastor denies it, Stirlitz says he knows that the Pastor was giving refuge to a Communist (Klaus). He then surprises the Pastor with the information that Klaus was really a Nazi agent. Stirlitz tells the Pastor he's got an assignment for him, whether he likes it or not. The Pastor is to go to Switzerland and establish contacts with respected church leaders and other pacifists there. The Pastor should tell them that while there are Nazis willing to discuss peace, Himmler's representatives are provocateurs and not to be trusted. The Pastor's sister will be arrested as soon as he enters Switzerland, but Stirlitz promises that she will be safe.
The "insurance agent" returns to visit Kathe in the hospital. By this time, Kathe has guessed that he really works for the Gestapo. He suggests that she call her uncle in Stockholm for assistance. He also says the insurance company can start to pay out some benefits, but he needs the names of two people who can vouch for her. She mentions Fritz Nusch, a retired general in Rahnsdorf whose radio Erwin used to fix, and a Frau Eichelbrenner in Potsdam. The insurance agent also says that Kathe's landlord has identified some suitcases as hers. He will bring them tomorrow so she can open them. As he leaves, the agent tells the nurse to call him immediately in case Kathe calls anyone or has any visitors.
Stirlitz is greatly shaken when he sees Erwin's wireless case being carried down a corridor and into the office of Sturmbannfuhrer Rolff. With no time to think and relying totally on instinct, Stirlitz calmly strides into Rolff's office and casually asks about the case. Rolff tells Stirlitz about Kathe and says they haven't quite decided on how to proceed with her. Stirlitz advises that they bring her in for questioning tomorrow and that Rolff not inform their superiors just yet, because the bosses often just muck things up when they get involved. Stirlitz starts to leave, but then, as if suddenly remembering, he says what he really came for was to borrow some of Rolff's Swedish sleeping pills. People always remember only the end of the conversation, Stirlitz thinks; and if anyone asks why Stirlitz came, Rolff will say it was for sleeping pills.
Stirlitz goes to Schellenberg's office and complains. It was Stirlitz who's been looking for the underground transmitter for eight months, and now it lands up on Rolff's desk even though, as Stirlitz says, "Rolff understands as much about wireless messages as I do about lesbianism!" Stirlitz demands the right to do the first interrogation of Kathe, and Schellenberg agrees.
Stirlitz shows up at the hospital and, talking Nazi tough, gruffly tells Kathe that her subversive underground activities have been uncovered and she is to accompany him to headquarters for interrogation. Kathe is thrilled to see Stirlitz, but, naturally, masks this joy. As they walk through the hospital corridor, Stirlitz is able to whisper instructions to Kathe. She is to say that she was just the radio-operator and that only Erwin knew the codes. He also shows her the photo of some advisor from the Foreign Ministry who died last week; Kathe is to identify this advisor as her contact.
Some hours later, Müller is furious when he learns that Kathe has disappeared from the hosptial. Then Schellenberg phones and tells Müller that Stirlitz has "turned" Kathe--she now agrees to work for the Nazis.
Müller listens to the tape of Stilitz's interrogation of Kathe. Müller is impressed with Stirlitz's masterful combination of threats and reassurances which apparently convinced Kathe to betray the Soviets. On the tape, Kathe makes only one condition--that she never wind up in the hands of the Soviets, who will surely execute her as a traitor.
Later, while there is an air raid and everyone else is down in the shelters, Stirlitz sneaks into the security office telephone exchange. Using one of the hotlines, he calls Bormann. Disguising his voice, Stirlitz arranges to meet Bormann in front of the Neues Tor hotel later that night.

11. Bormann's car pulls up in front of the hotel. Stirlitz, wearing glasses, a false moustache, and a hat pulled down over his eyes, gets into the back with Bormann. Bormann orders his chauffeur to drive around and rolls up the partition between the front and back seats so that he and Stirlitz can confer in private.
The next day, Himmler reviews the telephone logs and is furious when he sees that someone called Bormann's bunker on the hotline. They take fingerprints off the telephone that was used and discover that the same fingerprints were on Kathe's wireless set. Himmler and Müller decide to secretly gather fingerprints from all the SD staff. They also haul in Bormann's driver, who is forced to admit that Bormann met with a stranger the night before. The chauffeur is shown hundreds of photos, including Stirlitz's, but is unable to identify any of them. Himmler wants the chauffeur killed, but doesn't want to say so explicitly, so he leaves it up to Müller to decide. Müller knows that Himmler is merely setting him up as a scapegoat if needed, so he decides to let the chauffeur live.
Himmler knows that Bormann's archives are to be evacuated soon. He orders his agent Sturmbannfuhrer Otto Skorzeny to steal those archives.
Stirlitz takes a train to the Swiss border to arrange the details for the Pastor's crossing. Besides Stirlitz, there are only two other passengers on the train--a Swedish professor and a general returning to the Italian front after a convalescence. The general strikes up a conversation with Stirlitz, openly ridicules Hitler and acknowledges that Germany's defeat is certain.
At the border station, Stirlitz gets out. He stays on the platform and watches as the train pulls out again, carrying the general and the Swedish professor. Actually, the Swedish professor is really Pleishner, on his way to Berne carrying a secret report for Moscow from Stirlitz, including an urgent request for a new contact.
Back in Berlin, a convoy of 26 trucks begins its evacuation of Bormann's archive. Skorzeny's men, in civilian clothes, block the road with a truck. But instead of stopping, the convoy opens fire on Skorzeny's truck. The lead truck in the convoy smashes into Skorzeny's truck and shoves it off the road and into a ditch. A chase and gun fight ensue. Half of the convoy escapes, but, after a pitched battle, Skorzeny's men manage to seize the other 13 trucks. The sacks and zinc cases from the trucks are driven to the aerodrome, and the drivers who took them there are then killed to ensure secrecy.
Schellenberg has an informant in Dulles's household who reports that Dulles had a meeting with a priest. During the conversation, Dulles says the world will curse Hitler, not for the ovens of Maidanek and Auschwitz, but for spurring the unprecedented development of Soviet Russia with his invasion.
At the border, Stirlitz easily arranges things for the Pastor's crossing. When the lieutenant at the border crossing receives a coded message, he is to leave a car with the keys in it at the train station and some Swiss skis at a predesignated spot.
Pleischner, in Berne, is giddy with his new-found freedom. In a restaurant, he has a fit of hysterics and shouts out repeatedly, "Hitler's a scoundrel! A cad! A vulture! A vampire!".
Pleischner then goes to the address of the secret apartment as he was instructed to do by Stirlitz. He knocks on the door and gives the password. Then, without waiting for the counter-sign, he enters and hands over Stirliltz's secret coded report. Unfortunately, the tall man he handed the report to was not Moscow's agent (who's been exposed and arrested), but a Nazi agent.

12. Kathe and her son, whom she named Vladimir, are moved to a Gestapo apartment. She has two minders, a talkative young woman named Barbara and a shell-shocked demobililzed soldier, Helmuth.
Himmler had hoped to find among Bormann's archive information on how Party funds had been transferred to foreign banks; but no luck. However, he did find Stirlitz's report to Bormann. It was unsigned, so Himmler didn't know who wrote it; but it proved that treachery was afoot in the SD. Himmler gives the paper to Schellenberg and tells him to investigate.
Back in Berne, the tall man gently pumps Pleischner for information. Pleischner tells him where he's staying, that he came from Berlin and that he has to signal his safe arrival by sending a postcard back to Berlin with a particular stamp on it--the conquest of Mont Blanc. Pleischner hasn't been able to find the stamp, so the tall man obligingly says he'll find it. The tall man also convinces Pleischner to leave his false Swedish passport with him for a day. When Pleischer leaves, the Nazis keep him under surveillance.
When Stirlitz returns home late at night, he finds Holthoff there, sitting in the darkness. He's switched off the electricity, so the hidden listening devices won't work. Holthoff says that in reviewing Stirlitz's file he has come to realize that, wittingly or unwittingly, Stirlitz has been working to undermind the German effort to develop atomic weapons. Stirlitz had the physicist Runge shipped off to a concentration camp based on the analysis of his work made by only ten other physicists, all of whom, while loyal to Hitler, stood to gain from Runge's fall. Why had Stirlitz not consulted with 100s of physicists, as had Holthoff? And, as it turns out, Runge's line of research had been correct after all. So, basically, Stirlitz delayed progress on atomic weapons. Holthoff suggests that he, Stirlitz, and Runge all escape to the West...Stirlitz is the best man to organize it. Once again relying on his keen instincts, Stirlitz clubs Holthoff over the head with a bottle of cognac, knocking him out cold.
Müller was in his office. He had just been informed about the secret message Pleischner delivered to the conspirators' apartment in Berne. It appears to be in the same code used by that pianist (radio operator) Kathe. He decides that more direct means are to be applied against her. He doesn't believe that she knows nothing about the code. He's also thinking about Stirlitz. It was Müller who sent Holthoff to see Stirlitz with that bit of play-acting and provocation. If Stirlitz reports on Holthoff, then Müller will know that Stirlitz is loyal. If not, they he will know that Stirlitz is a traitor.
Stirlitz bursts into Müller's office, dragging the beaten and bloodied Holthoff. Stirlitz denounces Holthoff as either insane or a traitor. The dazed Holthoff asks for some water, and Stirlitz gives him a glass. Stirlitz writes a short report on the matter, then dashes off to see the Pastor and work on his plot to disrupt Himmler's peace feelers.
Müller no longer suspects Stirlitz, but sends the waterglass to be tested just so he can complete his file of SD personnel fingerprints. Later that night, Müller is awaken with shocking news: Stirlitz's fingerprints match those on the hotline telephone and on Kathe's wireless set.
In Switzerland, Wolff meets with Dulles. As a sign of good faith, Wolff says he can prevent the destruction of all the architectural wonders and works of art as the Fuhrer has ordered. Wolff produces a list of paintings by Titian, Botticelli, El Greco, and others which he has in safekeeping and says he can hand over. Dulles wants to know what they're worth. When Wolff says over a hundred million dollars, Dulles agrees to continue negotiations. They start to work out the membership of the future German cabinet. Wolff would be given the Ministry of Interior, but no portfolio is set aside for Himmler. Wolff does not include this latter piece of information in his report back to Himmler.

13. Sterlitz is in his Horch with the Pastor, speeding toward the border. They listen to Edith Piaf on the radio. Sterlitz predicts immortality for the chanteuse. They arrive at the border, and in the light of the full moon, Sterlitz watches as the Pastor skis off into the woods on the other side of the border. Stirlitz hasn't slept for 48 hours. He naps for 20 minutes then speeds back to Berlin, hoping to somehow rescue Kathe.
Meanwhile, back in Berlin, Müller's men are combing the city in a search for Stirlitz, but he seems to have vanished into thin air. Nor can they find the Pastor's sister, Frau Anna and her children. At 8 o'clock in the morning, Rolff arrives at Kathe's apartment. The baby is crying, wanting to be fed. Even Helmuth says the baby should be fed right away, but Rolff orders that the baby be ignored until he talks with Kathe. Rolff demands to know the name of Kathe's local intelligence chief. Kathe says she doesn't know it. Rolff says she's lying. He opens the window, letting in a frosty blast of air. Rolff then takes the baby, strips him naked, and threatens that, unless Kathe tells him what he wants to know, he will put the infant Vladimir on the window sill in the freezing air for three or four minutes, certainly killing the baby. The baby wails. Kathe howls like a helpless animal.
In Switzerland, Pastor Shlag establishes contact with church people, warning them that Wolff's negotiations are not sincere and saying he wants to help the Allies get in touch with those who helped him leave Germany and who genuinely want to talk peace.
General Airey from England and General Lemnitzer from America, disguised as Irish businessmen, cross into Switzerland and meet with Dulles to work out a joint Anglo-American position in the negotiations with Wolff, which have been dubbed Operation Crossword. They no longer talk of the Anglo-Soviet-American allies, but only of the Anglo-American allies.
Kaltenbrunner receives a message from Kruger saying that he is getting ready to destroy Prague as ordered. To help him in this matter he has recruited a Colonel Berg from military intelligence as well as a Russian named Grishanchikov, whom Stirlitz has recommended highly. Kaltenbrunner forwards the information to Müller.
Müller passes word to Berne that Pleischner is to be arrested. Completely unaware of the danger he is in, Pleischner is happily enjoying his freedom. He is early for his appointment at the secret apartment, so he stops in a cafe for ice cream. The tall, blue-eyed man enters the cafe along with an olive-skinned man. They don't notice Pleischner, who recognizes the olive-skinned man as a fanatic Gestapo agent who yelled at him during one of his yearly interviews, demanding unquestioningly obedience to the Fuhrer. The tall man and the olive-skinned fellow leave. Shaken, Pleischner goes outside. The tall man, already back in the secret apartment, waves down to Pleischner, beckoning him to come up. It is only then that Pleischner notices what he forgot to look for two days agao: a flower pot in the apartment window...the alarm signal, the signal that the secret apartment has been compromised; apparently the Russian agent managed to put it up before his capture. Pleischner realizes that he is being followed. He steps into the entrance of the apartment building complex and decides he will escape through the courtyard; but the door leading into the courtyard is locked.
Before going to the Reich Security Office, Stirlitz sits on a bench in the open air to collect his thought. He closes his eyes and fondly remembers his wife, Sashenka, and his son, Sasha, whom he hasn't seen in years.

14. Müller is taken aback when he is informed that Stirlitz has arrived at the Reich Security Office and is calmly strolling down the corridors, greeting everyone casually. Müller takes Stirlitz down to a cell in the basement and asks him about his role in the affair with the physicist Runge.
Meanwhile, Rolff is giving Kathe one last chance to confess before he puts baby Vladimir out into the freezing cold. Kathe doesn't talk. Rolff rips the blanket off the baby and opens the window. Two gunshots ring out--Helmuth has killed Rolff and Barbara. Back at the Reich Security Office, Müller seems satisfied with the explanation about Runge, but asks about Stirlitz's fingerprints on the hotline phone. Stirlitz admits that he called Bormann, but says he can't reveal the nature of their conversation unless Bormann himself is present. Müller then confronts Stirlitz with the fingerprints from Kathe and Erwin's radio set. Stirlitz is stumped at finding an excuse. Müller then shows Stirlitz the secret coded message they got from Pleischner in Berne. Without saying anything, Stirlitz knows that things look bad for him.
In Berne, Pleischner, unable to escape into the courtyard, rushes up the stairs of the apartment building, ringing doorbells, hoping to find refuge somewhere. No one opens their door for him. He finally reaches the top floor, with the two agents who were following him climbing up toward him. The tall man opens the door of the secret apartment and beckons to Pleischner. With nowhere else to go, Pleischner leaps out the window and plunges to his death.

15. Müller is summoned to the apartment where Rolff's and Barbara's bodies have been found. A neighbor reports seeing Helmuth, Kathe, and the baby leave and get on a bus heading west. Müller orders his men to check all along the bus route as well as stake out Stirlitz's apartment and the train stations.
In his cell, Sterlitz remembers that he was near Erwin and Kathe's bombed-out house after the air raid and that he helped a woman with a pram. He can claim that it was when he was helping people in the rubble that his fingerprints got on the radio case. He tells a guard to call Müller immediately.
Helmuth knocks on the door of an infants' home. The woman at the door says the children are being fed and he'll have to return in a half hour. Kathe is hiding in the cellar of a nearby destroyed building.
Müller learns that Helmuth's wife left him two months ago and that his four-month-old daughter is in an infants's home. Müller and some detectives set off for the home.
Helmuth, a peasant by birth, was a happy and patriotic German soldier at the beginning of the war. But that changed in Russian. He and other soldiers were ordered to kill Russian hostages, including women and children. After that, Helmuth became remorseful and morose. Then his wife, tired of married life, ran off with someone else and, like a common tart, dropped their baby off at the infants' home.
Helmuth returns to the infants' home and says he's being sent back to the front soon and wants to take his daughter, Ursula, for a stroll through the garden before then. The matron hands over the baby. Helmuth takes his daughter over to Kathe in the cellar. He says he'll wait on the street for the bus and hurry back to get Kathe and the babies when he sees it coming. But before the bus comes, Helmuth sees two black Gestapo cars speeding toward him. His first impulse is to run to Kathe, but he knows this will just attract attention and lead the Gestapo straight to Kathe and his daughter. He reasons, however, that if he shoots, Kathe will know what happened and will take care of his daughter for him, saving her from evil Gestapo guys like Rolff. So Helmuth steps into the street and fires his pistol at the Gestapo cars. He is cut down by machine gun fire, but not before he kills one of the detectives.
One of the men searching through the documents captured from Bormann's archive tells Schellenberg that he's found something interesting. It says that on Day-X Kaltenbrunner, Pohl, and Schellenberg are to be isolated, an euphemism for 'killed'. Müller's name was originally on the list, but crossed out. The document also lists other lower-ranking SS and SD officers who are to be eliminated, including Stirlitz. It was only because of an oversight on the part of Bormann's staff that Stirlitz's name remained on the list, but Schellenberg didn't know this; and this saved Stirlitz from being "isolated" by Schellenberg.
In his cell, Stirlitz tells Müller that he no doubt touched Kathe's case when moving about in the rubble of her neighborhood. Müller is dubious, but says he'll check it out.
When Kathe heard the shooting on the street, she looked out the cellar entrance and saw Helmuth writhing on the ground. She found a manhole coverin the cellar and climbed down through it with the two sleeping babies. She stood there, perched precariously on the ladder above the rushing sewer water and clutching the children, as two detectives searched the cellar above her.

16. Müller checks with policemen who were on duty near Kathe's house on the day of the bombing and confirms Stirlitz's alibi. Stirlitz is released. Müller then asks him where Pastor Shlag is. Stirlitz, not answering directly, says he knows that Müller was ordered to try and implicate Stirlitz in some scheme and also arrested Bormann's chauffeur on orders from above. Stirlitz says he has to go meet Bormann at the museum again. Müller tells him to take along a tape recorder. Müller reminds Stirlitz that Bormann controls vast amounts of wealth hidden in foreign banks. Money that could be used to secure a comfortable retirement for Müller and Stirlitz, and which will fund the return of National Socialism in approximately 1965.
In Berne, the Pastor meets with an Italian on Dulles's staff. The Italian says the Allies won't talk with the Pastor unless they know exactly for whom he is speaking and what their political platform is. The Pastor assures the Italian that they're not Communists, but more than this he does not reveal. But the Italian senses that the Pastor knows something of Dulles's negotiations with Wolff.
After the detectives left the cellar, Kathe dragged herself out of the manhole and, carrying the two babies, made her way out onto the street and onto a bus, where she promptly fell asleep. Sometime later, she is awakened by the bus driver and a policeman, who tell her there's an air raid. They lead Kathe down into an air raid shelter. A woman gives her clean diapers for the babies. Kathe feeds the children, then, when the air raid ends, leaves them in the care of a young woman for a moment as goes out to look for a phone. A police officer tells her he can use the phone in his office. She dials Stirlitz's number. She does not notice that her picture and description are on the police officer's desk; nor does the police officer recognize her.
In Stirlitz's office, Stirlitz and Müller are listening to the recording of Stirlitz's conversation with Bormann. Bormann wants Stirlitz to get a recording of Wolff admitting that he is acting as Himmler's representative in the negotiations with the West. Bormann wants to compromise Himmler in Hitler's eyes, Dulles in Stalin's eyes, and Wolff in Himmler's.
Just then, the telephone rings. It's Kathe calling. In front of Müller, Stirlitz pretends that it's Bormann calling to summon him to another meeting. Kathe tells Stirlitz where she is and asks him to come get her.

17. Stirlitz drives out to pick up Kathe. Stirlitz knows that he doesn't have much time because he knows his phone calls are recorded and Müller will soon learn that it was a woman who called, not Bormann. Stirlitz drives out to Schellenberg's house and tells him that Müller knows about Wolff's mission in Switzerland. Stirlitz volunteers to go to Berne to personally take charge of the situtation, and Schellenberg agrees.
Soon, Stirlitz and Kathe are driving across the border into Switzerland. Kathe, thinking of Erwin, bursts into tears. Stirlitz advises that she must think only of the future now. Kathe wisely replies, "Without a past, there can't be any future."
Once in Berne, Stirlitz meets with Pastor Shlag and reviews his information on the Dulles-Wolff meetings. Stirlitz sends off a secret message to Moscow telling them that perhaps Dulles has not been keeping the U.S. government fully informed about his negotiations with the SS, telling them instead that he is talking to Hitler's "opponents". Either the West is playing a double-game, or Dulles is about to betray the interests of the United States. Stirlitz recommends that the Soviet Union let the West know that it knows about the secret negotiations.
At a second meeting with the Pastor, Stirlitz says that the Pastor's sister and her children have been moved to safety. They are staying with a peasant family in the mountains, away from the Gestapo and all the bombings. Stirlitz produces a letter from the Pastor's sister and some photographs to prove it. The Pastor gives Stirlitz a transcript of negotitations between Dulles and Wolff which ex-Chancellor Brunning obtained. In the transcript, the discussion centers on working to get Kesselring to capitulate on the Western front and Vietinghoff to do the same in Italy.
Kathe and the babies get on a train for Paris.
In Moscow, Peoples Commissar for Foreign Affairs Molotov summons the British ambassador and hands him a stern note, saying that the Soviet Union is not at all pleased with the fact that the British and Americans are negotiating with the Nazis behind the USSR's back.
Bormann was actually happy when Stirlitz told him about Himmler's scheme to contact the West. He saw it as his chance to eliminate Himmler. He phoned Kaltenbrunner to have Wolff recalled to Berlin and arrested as soon as he got off the plane. Unfortunately for Bormann, Schellenberg got wind of this and showed up at the airport in his most impressive general's uniform. With Schellenberg there greeting Wolff, the Gestapo thugs did not dare to arrest him. Schellenberg wisked Wolff off to Himmler's where they get their alibi straight: Wolff had actually been sent to Berne to infiltrate and expose the rotten schemers like Pastor Shlag who were the real ones who wanted a deal with the West. They present this alibi to Hitler, who foolishly believes it.
Churchill lies to Stalin in an official response to Molotov's note. The British leader says that England and America were never trying to exclude the Soviet Union and that the negotiations with Wolff never concerned possible German capitulation. Stalin also writes a complaint to Roosevelt, in it, he notes one strange anomoly: The German are still fighting tooth-and-nail for every inch of land on the Eastern Front, but they surrender important towns on the Western Front without any resistance. To quote:
"The Germans are fighting desperately against the Russians for Zemlenice, an obscure station in Czechoslovakia, which they need just as much as a dead man needs a poultice, but they surrender without any resistance such important towns in the heart of Germany as Osnabruck, Mannheim, and Kassel. You will admit that this behavior on the part of the Germans is more than strange and unaccountable."
Schellenberg summons Stirlitz back to Berlin. Before he leaves Bern, Sterlitz meets with a new contact sent by Moscow. The contact says that Moscow, knowing the ticklish position he is in, does not insist that Stirlitz return to Berlin. But Stirlitz, knowing the potential might of the German army and German industry and aware of the West's double-dealing, feels that there may be terrible surprises to come; and so he decides to go back to Berlin. The contact also tells Stirlitz that he, Stirlitz, has been nominated as a Hero of the Soviet Union.
Driving back to Berlin, Stirlitz listens on the radio to German actress and singer Marika Rokk. She sings: "Seventeen moments of spring, will be captive in your heart....". Stirlitz stops his car and walks into the pine forest. He lingers there for a long time, relishing the feel of the earth.

SYNOPSIS
The divine Hercules is bored by his life on mount Olympus and asks father Zeus for a vacation on Earth. His request is denied, but by an accident with one of Zeus' lightning bolts he's thrown into New York. His inexperience with civilization and his arrogance lead into problems - until a college professor's daughter helps him to acclimatize. He starts to like living on earth and wants to stay for longer, even when father Zeus sends Nemesis to punish him.

This may on one hand actually well be the worst movie I've seen, on regular movie basis that is, because on the other hand it's also the funniest movie I've stumbled across since I saw "Monty Python and the quest for the holy grail".

I've always thought Arnold Schwarzenegger has been wooden in his acting, but none of his other movies even come close to the extreme amount of talent vacuum he possesses in this movie. I had a really hard time understanding whether he was supposed to resemble a retard or a tree, either way he did a fine job, since it all seemed perfectly natural. For him, that is. The character Hercules is anyway the most testosterone-filled man caught on camera. This guy has a constant urge of ripping off his shirt everytime he either has to do something or everytime he's bored. He even has the great ability of killing actors dressed as bears by lifting them up in the air and throwing them around, destroying cabs because he's angry and impressing ladies by ripping off his shirt in front of them. Now that's at least three dimensions! In one character! Kudos to the excellent scriptwriters who managed to write this amazing piece of art during their part-time job at Dairy Queen! Long live the underdog!

Then we have main supporting character Arnold Stang, an actor which has exactly two different looks: one of utter confusion, probably because he's wondering about what the hell he's doing in the movie in the first place and one look of not so utter confusion, which he often uses when Hercules flexes his muscles for him.

Besides these two main actors we have Zeus, played by someone named Ernest Graves, a man who does a great job of looking mad in every scene. Zeus meets a woman and becomes mad. Zeus talks to Hercules and gets... mad! Zeus get to know something about sabotage and he get's, wait, I got it on my tongue. Oh yeah now I know it, mad!

Then we have lots of characters played by actors I have no reason whatsoever of giving away the names of. But as far as characters go, the goddess of beauty is a really pug-ugly woman/dog/gorilla with a stuffed bra and all, Pluto has the incredible ability of turning out all the lights in a plastic version of New York, Atlas and Samson helps Hercules by throwing punches a few meters in front of bad guys, probably to stun them with their utter uselessness or possibly showing off their godly talents that doesn't even require them to hit people to hurt them. The old fool Samson is a part for himself, since he doesn't even seem understand he's from the Bible and has nothing to do with Greek mythology. But then again I have a feeling many people involved in this movie weren't quite sure of what they were doing.

Other intriguing parts here are that some of the scenes are so incredibly badly done and edited you actually can't understand what's happening. The fight in the stairs really had me puzzled about what was going on. After I saw it ten times in repeat I understood that there actually was a hidden door somewhere and that it actually made sense in a surreal "Hercules in New York" kind of way.

Then we have Olympus, not only home of the Gods but also home of the big evil city traffic, you can hear cars driving by and honking every second. This is maybe one of the director's more intriguing ideas, were he want's to show us that time doesn't stand still even in Olympus and that they actually have cars there. Wait a minute that doesn't make any sense. OK maybe it's supposed to be there just because no-one ever even thought about editing the sound and that reality works that way: what you don't alter is most likely to stay the way it is. Yeah, thats more like it.

I have only listed a few of the errors in this movie here, since I won't spend the entire day of writing this review but I think the fact that Arnold Scwarzenegger actually managed to not only have a movie career but also got elected as a senator has to rate as the biggest of the lot. Only in America folks. Only in America.

Be sure to watch this even if it may be on of the worst movies made. If there ever was a movie so bad it's funny, it has to be this one.

Just saw this movie today at the Seattle International Film Festival, and enjoyed it thoroughly.
Great writing and direction, excellent and believable interaction among the cast, and great comic timing as well.
This movie touches on themes that are universal-family and separation. As a result, I can see European, Asian, and American audiences all finding points of similarity between this film and their own lives.
If all that wasn't enough, this has the potential to be the best underground date movie of the year...somebody distribute this in the USA, please!

Finally: thank you Maria Blom! It really is a great film.

Xiu Xiu is a beautifully made movie in which Joan Chen combines sumptuous visual imagery, a beautiful,
delicate musical score, fine performances by her actors and a spare and intelligent script to produce a
simple, moving story of two lost lives.
The movement of the story from the dark confines of the tent Xiu Xiu and Lao Jin share to the almost limitless prairies and big skys of the Tibetan highlands follows the emotional pulse of the film. Expert camera work creates perspectives that sweep from the touchingly intimate to the overwhelmingly vast, exploring the characters from inside and out.
Wonderful, economical performances from newcomer Lu Lu and Tibetan stage veteran Lopsang give profound and touching insight into the extraordinariness of two ordinary people. Chen saves the story from descent into melodrama by a precise and thoughtful restraint that respects, observes, and never intrudes to seek to "explain" or apologize.
A film worth going out of one's way to see.

It is very hard to find this movie on the web; I was not able to find a decent avi version, so I ripped my dvd and made a very high quality avi and uploaded it.
I think this movie really deserve it.

God save the King - Tjenare Kungen (2005) Ulf Malmros

If you are familiar with Ulf Malmros' previous works, you know that a stylish movie about music and set in the 80s, is just up his alley. Malmros is without doubt Sweden's best director when it comes to using music to create mood.

For Tjenare Kungen, he has been given an historically big budget to buy tunes for. The result is - of course - as good as anyone could have hoped. With everything from Alphaville to Thåström, Tjenare Kungen swiftly transfers us back to 1984.

The entire movie is in fact an orgy in everything that made the 80s so special (?). A lot of time has been put into little - but oh so important - details like clothes and hair-cuts.

As with Smala Sussie, Ulf Malmros has once again found a bunch of very talented debutants. Josefin Neldén (Abra) and Cecilia Wallin (Millan) are both extremely believable and lovable as the two girls forming a punk band. When you leave the theatre, it is impossible not to have a little crush on Abra.

Tjenare Kungen is not ground-breaking in any way. It is a simple story that follows a formula proved to be good. It is not as heart-warmening as Den bästa sommaren, and the dialogue isn't as quirky and hilarious as in Smala Sussie. However, when you leave the theatre, you do it with a big smile on your lips. Knowing that you have just had one of your best cinematic moments this year.

honolulu says: I never thought, I'd like such a movie, but these two girls were absolute convincing!! fortunately there's much more Swedish Girl-Punk, than "80's-Junk", unfortunately the lyrics of the songs are not translated.

Winner of the coveted Sundance/NHK International Filmmakers Award, Laundry is a sweet but even-handed romance that never trespasses into the saccharine; and, to its credit, Laundry lacks the banal, all-quirkiness-and-no-substance kitsch so typical of other films in its genre. As the story unfolds, it is artfully garnished with both powerful symbolism and subtle metaphors. Pastoral soundtrack by Zentaro Watanabe, and Kozo Shibasaki's frank cinematography are an added asset to the film.

Junichi Mori's characters are mindfully crafted as they walk the tightrope between salvation and the abyss. Yosuke Kubozuka plays the part of Teru with prodigious pathos and a subtle comic irony that belies his limited cinematic experience, while Koyuki brings an alluring depth to the character of Mizue, with her simple needs and modest dreams.

When it comes to love, death and the travails of daily existence, there's a little of Teru and Mizue in all of us. And whether in spite of, or because of its peculiarities, Laundry is indeed an uplifting and refreshing respite from the dizzying spin-cycle of life.

Olga Benário Prestes (1908 – 1942) was a German-Brazilian communist militant, born in Munich as Olga Gutmann Benario. Her father was a Social-Democrat lawyer of Jewish origin and her mother was a member of Bavarian high-society. In 1923, aged fifteen, she joined the Communist Youth International and in 1928 she organised her lover and comrade Otto Braun's escape from Moabit prison. Together they travelled to Moscow, where Benário attended the Lenin-School of the Comintern and then worked as an instructor of the Communist Youth International, in the Soviet Union and in France and Great Britain, where she participated in coordinating anti-fascist activities. She parted from Otto Braun in 1931.

In 1934, Benário was tasked with the return to Brazil of Luís Carlos Prestes. In order to accomplish this mission, false papers were created stating that they were a Portuguese married couple. By the time they arrived at Rio de Janeiro in 1935, this had become a reality. After a failed insurrection in November 1935, Benário and her husband were arrested in January 1936, during the harsh anti-communist campaign declared after Getúlio Vargas had proclaimed the fascist-like Estado Novo régime. Pregnant and separated from Prestes, Benário was delivered to the Gestapo who, despite an international campaign, took her back to Germany in September 1936. On arrival she was imprisoned, where she gave birth to a daughter, Anita Leocádia. Anita was subsequently freed and reunited with her grandmother, Leocádia Prestes.

Olga however, was sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp and from there to an experimental extermination camp set up at an old psychiatric hospital in Bernburg in 1942, where she was gassed.

Luis Carlos Prestes, the father of Anita Leocádia and former partner of Olga Benario, eventually reconciled and struck a political partnership with Getúlio Vargas after the end of the Estado Novo.

Legacy:

In 2004, a popular Brazilian film based on Benário's life, Olga, was released and she was also the subject of a German documentary, Olga Benário - Ein Leben für die Revolution. Today a street in Berlin bears her name. In 2006, the opera Olga by Jorge Antunes, premiered on October 14 at the Theatro Municipal in São Paulo, Brazil. Olga Benário was also subject of an opera Entre la Piel y el Alma by G.P. Cribari, which premiered in Glasgow at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama on May 22, 1992.

Majidi's movies are visually stunning and have such a profound effect on the viewer that when we leave the cinema, we see the world in a different light. Deus é Brasileiro (God is Brazilian) is a 2003 Brazilian comedy film directed and co-written by Carlos Diegues and based on a story by João Ubaldo Ribeiro. In the film, God, portrayed by Antônio Fagundes, decides to take a vacation and heads to northeastern Brazil to find a saint as a replacement.


Plot:

Taoca, a part-time fisherman and small-time con artist, finds a man holding on to a buoy in the middle of the ocean. The man claims he is God, but Taoca doesn't believe him until he performs some miracles.

It seems God has decided to take a break and is searching for someone to temporarily take over. With Taoca, God travels the country in hopes of finding a new saint who is fit for the job. Along the way, they meet a woman, Madá, who joins the two in hopes they will take her to São Paulo, where her mother has died.

Eventually, the trio comes across a young man who appears to have the right qualifications, except he has no belief in a higher power.

Although he loves her, Francisco is a slovenly man who lives in a strange, incestuous household with his mother and sister. Oribela does everything she can to escape until she enlists the help of slave trader Ximenes (Caco Ciocler) in order to sail back to Portugal. The dialog is spoken in an archaic Portuguese tongue. Alain Fresnot was very lucky with this plot and cast. History tells us that really there were few men in Brazil Colony, back in 1570, who desperately needed wives. So, they’ve asked their priest to ask for orphan girls in order to marry them. The brutal schock between well educated, good looking and refined girls on one side and those very rude and brutal slave owners and farmers is not only hard to bear (and not only because it was true!) but also explains a lot the position of women in Brazilian society even for today. This movie is a MUST SEE in order to understand fully the relationships among Brazilian. Sad thing. But also true.

Watch this movie. You will never see human beings the same way…

The Kid (1921) - Charlie Chaplin

The Kid was Charles Chaplin's first self-produced and directed feature film; 1914's 6-reel Tillie's Punctured Romance was a Mack Sennett production in which Chaplin merely co-starred.

Chaplin had difficulties getting The Kid produced. His inspiration, it is suggested was the death of his own first son, Norman Spencer Chaplin a few days after birth in 1919. His determination to make a serio-comic feature was challenged by First National who preferred two reel films, which were more quickly produced and released. Chaplin wisely gained his distributors' approval by inviting them to the studio, where he trotted out the delightful Coogan to entertain them. Chaplin's divorce case from his first wife Mildred Harris also played a part; fearing seizure of the negatives Chaplin and crew escaped to Salt Lake City and later to New York to complete the editing of the film. Chaplin's excellent and moving score for The Kid was composed in 1971 for a theatrical re-release, but used themes that Chaplin had composed in 1921. Chaplin re-edited the film somewhat for the re-release, cutting scenes that he felt were overly sentimental, such as Purviance's observing of a May-December wedding and her portrayal as a saint, outlined by a church's stained glass window.

The story "with a smile and perhaps a tear," begins with unwed mother Edna Purviance leaving the Charity Hospital, babe in arms. Her burden is illustrated with a title card showing Christ bearing the cross. The father of the child is a poor artist who cares little for of his former lover, carelessly knocking her photo into his garret fireplace and cooly returning it there when he sees it is too badly damaged to keep. The mother sorrowfully leaves her baby in the back seat of a millionaire's limousine, with a note imploring whoever finds it to care for and love the child. But thieves steal the limo, and, upon discovering the baby, ditch the tot in an alleyway trash can. Enter Chaplin, out for his morning stroll, carefully selecting a choice cigarette butt from his well used tin. He stumbles upon the squalling infant and, after trying to palm it off on a lady with another baby in a carriage, decides to adopt the kid himself. Meanwhile Purviance has relented, but when she returns to the mansion and is told that the car has been stolen, she collapses in despair. Chaplin outfits his flat for the baby as best he can, using an old coffee pot with a nipple on the spout as a baby bottle and a cane chair with the seat cut out as a potty seat. Chaplin's attic apartment is a representation of the garret he had shared with his mother and brother in London, just as the slum neighborhood is a recreation of the ones he knew as a boy.

Five years later, Chaplin has become a glazier, while his adopted son (the remarkable Jackie Coogan) drums up business for his old man by cheerfully breaking windows in the neighborhood. Purviance meanwhile has become a world famous opera singer, still haunted by the memory of her child, who does charity work in the very slums in which he now lives. Ironically, she gives a toy dog to little Coogan. Chaplin and Coogan's close calls with the law and fights with street toughs are easily overcome, but when Coogan falls ill, the attending doctor learns of the illegal adoption and summons the Orphan Asylum social workers who try to separate Chaplin from his foster son. In one of the most moving scenes in all of Chaplin's films, Chaplin and Coogan try to fight the officials, but Chaplin is subdued by the cop they have summoned. Coogan is roughly thrown into the back of the Asylum van, pleading to the welfare official and to God not to be separated from his father. Chaplin, freeing himself from the cop, pursues the orphanage van over the rooftops and, descending into the back of the truck, dispatches the official and tearfully reunites with his "son". Returning to check on the sick boy, Purviance encounters the doctor and is shown the note which she had attached to her baby five years earlier. Chaplin and Coogan, not daring to return home, settle in a flophouse for the night. The proprietor sees a newspaper ad offering a reward for Coogan's return and kidnaps the sleeping boy. After hunting fruitlessly, a grieving Chaplin falls asleep on his tenement doorstep and dreams that he has been reunited with the boy in Heaven (that "flirtatious angel" is Lita Grey, later Chaplin's second wife). Woken from his dream by the cop, he is taken via limousine to Purviance's mansion where he is welcomed by Coogan and Purviance, presumably to stay.

Wasabi (2001) - Luc Besson, avec Jean Reno

Hubert is a French policeman with very sharp methods. After being forced to take 2 months off by his boss, who doesn't share his view on working methods, he goes back to Japan, where he used to work 19 years ago, to settle the probate of his girlfriend who left him shortly after marriage without a trace. There he mets his former colleague Momo and his daughter Yumi who he did not know was ever born. Hubert eventually finds out why his girlfriend left him and the reason becomes his and his new daughters problem.


honolulu says: Jean Reno is excellent, as usual, and together with his sidekick MOMO (Michel muller) a hillarious team. The humor in this whole film is very delicate, as you are used from french cinema.
But most amazing was the performance of Ryoko Hirosue as Yumi, because her acting was as good, as in her popular J-Dramas, but she did her act completely in perfect french.
Finally I got an original version with engl. subs, and it was soooo great, that I watched the film immediately a second time !!

It can happen, that some of the downloaded files will appear CORRUPTED, allthough thy left my pc tested & 100% OK; but no problem: PLEASE DON'T PANIC !!
Just extract, but activate 'Keep Broken Files' (right click on part1.rar-file, and 'extraxt files; new window opens,where you can choose destination-folder, with option 'Keep Broken Files' AT THE LEFT BOTTOM) !!The movie will be OK - DESPITE ERROR-MESSAGES !!I've downloaded some of them, extracted (with corrupted files !!) and everything went well !!!!!!!!(I COULD fluently SKIP WITH 1-MINUTE-STEPS THROUGH THE WHOLE MOVIE and where I stopped, it played absolutely NORMAL, without any delay - maybe just a few seconds will be played 'badly', because of the errors......)
