Over the course of three years, director Andre Gregory and a group of actors came together on a voluntary basis in order to better understand Chekhov's work through performance workshops. Staged and filmed entirely within the vacant shell of the then-abandoned Amsterdam Theater on 42nd Street in New York City, they enacted the play rehearsal style on a bare stage with the actors in street clothes. Free from any commercial demands, their performances were for an invited audience only. Gregory and Malle decided to document the play as they had developed it. The film was the result of the collaborative process.

In the Victorian period, two young children, Richard and Emmeline Lestrange, and a galley cook are the survivors of a shipwreck in the South Pacific. In the turmoil of the burning ship from which they escaped, they become separated from another lifeboat that the boy's father is in and drift out to sea. After days afloat, they arrive and are stranded on a lush tropical island. The cook, Paddy Button, assumes the responsibility for caring for the small children, teaching them how to behave, how to forage for food, etc. He cautions them about the other side of the island, where he has seen evidence of bloody human sacrifices. He doesn't go into detail but tells them the bogeyman is there, and makes them agree to a "law" that they will never venture in that direction. Another "law" is that they must never eat a certain scarlet berry that Emmeline finds -- they are "never-wake-up" berries. The memory of having had these things in her mouth haunts Emmeline in nightmares for the rest of the film, and because Paddy talks about being "dead'n'buried," she associates the words with the berries and calls them the "dead'n'berries."

An unspecified amount of time passes and Paddy eventually dies in a drunken binge. Richard and Emmeline, now alone and very frightened, cross in the lifeboat to another island and rebuild their home. Together, they have to survive solely on their resourcefulness, and the bounty of their remote paradise. Years pass and they both grow into tall, strong and beautiful teenagers. They live in a self-constructed hut and spend their days together fishing, swimming, and diving for pearls. Eventually, strange emotions start influencing their relationship.

Richard and Emmeline begin to fall in love, although this is emotionally stressful for them because of their general ignorance of human sexuality. Both teens' bodies mature and develop, and they are physically attracted to each other, but do not know how to express it. Emmeline is shown beginning her first menstrual period when she was swimming naked and being very frightened at first. Richard has many questions about what is happening to them, but has no answers; he wants to hold and kiss Emmeline, but when she rejects him, he goes off alone and masturbates. Meanwhile, ever-curious Emmeline has wandered to the forbidden side of the island and discovered an impressive, Kon-Tiki-like idol there. Its shrine is covered with blood. Instinctively recognizing that this is a holy place, she kneels and prays, later telling Richard that she thinks Paddy was mistaken; that the "bogeyman", who bleeds like Jesus, is actually God. Ultimately, they make up after a fight when Emmeline accidentally steps on "a fish that looks like a rock" and barely survives as Richard sets her down at the shrine.

Richard and Emmeline are then seen swimming naked in the coral reef until they swim to shore. Still naked near the shrine and eating some fruit, Richard and Emmeline then discover passionate love and then sexual intercourse. From then on, they make love quite often for several months, hang out naked, and eventually Emmeline gets pregnant. Although the audience is fully aware of Emmeline's condition, Richard and Emmeline themselves have no knowledge of childbirth and don't understand the physical changes to Emmeline's body. One night, Richard discovers Emmeline is missing. Looking for her in the forest, he discovers the origins of the drums they have been hearing from time to time on the forbidden side of the island. They come from a group of natives from another island, who use the shrine to sacrifice conquered enemies. Richard flees as the sacrificee is killed. Richard hears Emmeline cry out, and follows the sound just in time to help her give birth to a baby boy whom they named Paddy.

The young couple spend all their time together with Paddy, teaching him how to swim, throw a spear, and play in the mud. It is during this mud play that we see a ship in the distance, heading for the island. Although Richard was formerly keen to leave and remonstrated with Emmeline for not lighting signal fires when they saw ships, he is now committed to the island as their home and does nothing. Meanwhile, the crew, led by Richard's father Arthur, see the family playing on the shore but as they're completely covered in mud, assume that these are Tahitian natives, not the young couple they've been searching for all these years.

One day, the two young parents and Paddy cross in the lifeboat to the place they lived just after arriving. While Richard looks through their old things and cuts bananas, absent-minded Emmeline doesn't realize her son has not only brought a branch of some berries into the boat, he has tossed one of the oars out. When the tide sweeps the boat out into the lagoon, Richard swims to her, followed closely by a shark. Emmeline throws the other oar at the shark, striking it and giving Richard just enough time to get in the boat. Though not far from shore, they are unable to return -- they cannot jump in the water to retrieve the oars without risking a shark attack. They try to paddle with their hands, but to no avail; the boat is caught in the current and drifts out to sea.

After days of being adrift, Richard and Emmeline wake in the boat to find Paddy eating the berries he picked, a poisonous berry they called the "never wake up berries" as told to them by deceased Paddy. Emmeline tries to get him to spit them out, but he has swallowed them. Hopelessly lost, Richard and Emmeline decide to eat the berries as well, lying down embracing to await death. Only a few hours later, Arthur's ship finds them floating in the boat. Arthur asks, "Are they dead?" and the ship's captain answers, "No, sir. They are asleep." The ending, true to the book, differs considerably from the one in the 1949 film version.

Overview

A Prophet (French: Un prophète) is a 2009 French crime film directed by Jacques Audiard. The film won the Grand Prix at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival. Audiard claims that the film aims at "creating icons, images for people who don't have images, the Arabs in France," though he also had stated that the film "has nothing to do with his vision of society," and is a work of fiction. The film was the submission of France for the 82nd Academy Awards for Best Foreign Film.



Synopsis

The film follows the prison career of Malik El Djebena, a green new inmate who arrives in jail as an illiterate 19-year-old without friends and without hope. His rise through the ranks and his negotiation of the treacherous maze of allegiances and alliances is, for the most part, depicted with brutal and often bloody realism. But occasional fantasy elements – a hallucinatory premonition; the ghostly but benign visitations of dead prisoner – merge seamlessly into the larger picture.
In the central role of Malik, newcomer Tahar Rahim is a revelation. He's present in every scene and carries the weight of the full 150 minute running time. Initially, he's a fearful loner, surviving on animal instincts alone. But as he endures each ordeal, Malik begins to take shape and fill the film. Originally happy just to survive from day to day, Malik begins to thrive, seeing in prison a chance for the education that has so manifestly failed him in his life before. But this is the kind of vocational training that doesn't lead to a 9 to 5 job. Malik learns to read and write, but he also covertly teaches himself Corsican, the better to ingratiate himself further with the formidable gang who rule the prison.

The threats to his life, present in every sidelong glance from friends or foes alike, gather as Malik juggles his allegiances to the Corsican gang, his overtures to the growing Muslim prison contingent and the ambitious drug-running business he masterminds from behind bars.
The ruthless, testosterone-soaked, dog eat dog world is captured with a cold-eyed clarity and a total lack of sensationalism. Audiard's occasional stylistic flourishes, like the sound design which evokes the roar of blood pumping in Malik's ears after he is temporarily deafened by gunshots, only serve to draw the audience further into Malik's mesmerising journey through the criminal underworld.

Meanwhile, Rocco gets drafted by the military, and becomes a successful boxer himself upon his return. Complications arise when Nadia (Annie Girardot), a prostitute, enters their lives. Simone falls in love with Nadia first; however, Rocco eventually becomes the object of her affection. Simone's obsession with Nadia and his rapidly deteriorating behavior ultimately threaten to bring the family to ruin, even as the saintly Rocco tries to save his brother. Luchino Visconti had a strong influence on Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorcese, and if you enjoy the work of these two Italian-American filmmakers, then I think you’re going to love Visconti’s 1960 Italian-language movie "Rocco and His Brothers." Set in 1950s Milan, "Rocco" uses realistic settings and an operatic style to tell a tale of changing times, family ties, conflicting moral codes, human weaknesses, jealousy, rape, and murder. … Visconti’s genius in "Rocco and His Brothers" is that he was able to draw a portrait of particular people in a specific time and place, yet they are universally recognizable. I don’t believe Visconti was trying to send any single message in this movie, but surely one of his major themes is that change is inevitable, but it’s not easy. In any case, "Rocco and His Brothers" is a richly textured drama that I find to be both moving and resonant. - Ivana Redwine

However, del Toro has stated that the faun in the film is not Pan.

The creators of Tanner '88, director Robert Altman and writer Garry Trudeau, return 16 years later to their fictional presidential candidate, Jack Tanner (Michael Murphy). Now the focus is on his controlling daughter (Cynthia Nixon), a fair-weather filmmaker trying to put together a film about her father's 1988 campaign. The mix of seemingly unscripted dialogue and heady political talk is still present, but this series (four half-hour episodes that aired on Showtime right before the 2004 presidential election) concentrate on--and lampoon--documentary films and the passion, misdirected or not, that goes into them. Does simply having a camera focused at the subject really make a film? Fans of Altman's cocktail of eavesdropping will not be disappointed. A diner at the New York gathering spot Elaine's can give us a shot of celebrity: there's Martin Scorsese and Steve Buscemi talking about film, former governor Mario Cuomo riffing on President Bush. Although there are certain joys--like Jack Tanner's return to the convention floor--the results, the insight, and even the laughs are not the same as 16 years ago. --Doug Thomas
As with Tanner 88, Tanner on Tanner mixes fact and fiction, and cameos include Robert Redford, Martin Scorsese, Howard Dean and Ron Reagan Jr. But whereas Tanner 88 satirised politics, it's the media that comes in for the most stick in Tanner on Tanner.
The media circus reaches its climax at the Democratic Convention in Boston, where Alex Tanner encounters Alex Kerry - who is herself making a documentary about her father - John Kerry. As Altman has said in an interview, "We were really unknown when we were running around in '88. All we had to attract anybody with was a camera. This year, we were one of 40 documentary crews with accreditation. It's silly. We were pretty much following each other around."

There 's nothing supernatural in "les chiens", but Alain Jessua's treatment gives us the strange feeling we are sometimes watching a sci-fi, fantasy and horror movie.The atmosphere seems irrational and even the "good" heroine turns into an almost disturbing character. She was the victim of a rape and she bought a dog to protect her. In the town,a lot of people do the same, in spite of the mayor's opposition. Depardieu portrays the owner of kennels where he trains the future dog-handlers (we've got to call them like this because they are no longer nice little pets).

French-Canadian filmmaker Jean-Daniel Lafond goes into the life of wanted terrorist David Belfield, an African American convert to Islam who was born in the United States and allegedly murdered Ali Akbar Tabatabai, a former Iranian ambassador loyal to the deposed Shah of Iran and an outspoken critic of Ayatollah Khomeini in 1980. Belfield, now known as Hassan Abdulrahman, fled to Iran following the murder and has remained there ever since. In this film, Belfield tries to explain and justify his terrorist activity. Lafond also puts forward several conspiracy theories as to who ordered Belfield to kill the former diplomat.

Harriet (played by Patricia Walters) belongs to an upper middle-class English family residing on the banks of the Ganges River in India. Her father (Knight) runs a jute mill, and she has five sisters. Her only brother (played by a very young Richard R. Foster), somewhat ten years her junior, wants to learn how to tame cobras with a flute. Although they are raised in a genteel, English setting, and even have the benefit of a live-in nanny, their upbringings bear the mark of a curious confluence of Western and Eastern philosophies. If there ever could be a compromise between Christianity and Hinduism, they are immersed in it. (The youngest girl, for instance, has a doll she treats as her newborn baby, and says that some babies can be born again and again.)
