A young woman, Frédérique, finds herself alone in a deserted forest. It is the perfect place to commit suicide. But she is disturbed by two teeange boys and instinctively pulls her rifle on them. The bullet intended for herself ends up seriously wounding one of the boys. As she flees the scene of the shooting, Frédérique’s first thought is to give herself up. But then she changes her mind. No one saw her fire the gun. And who would suspect her, a 24-year-old nurse? But fate takes a cruel twist when the boy she shot, Marco, is taken to the hospital where she works. It is she who has to treat him and ensure that he recovers from his near-fatal injuries. How will Marco react when he discovers that she is the one who almost killed him?

Gary Cooper plays Lou Gehrig, the first baseman for the Yanks who suffered from a crippling and incurable disease. Even when Gehrig was a student at Columbia University, the press had already pegged him as a top ballplayer. Soon the New York Yankees selected Gehrig for their lineup, and he became an overnight sensation on the baseball diamond. But this dedicated player--who had never missed a game once he stepped onto a Major League Baseball field--suddenly fell ill with a mysterious disease. As his body began to fail him, Gehrig had to say good-bye to the fans who idolized him and to the sport he loved so dearly. The film's final scene is a deeply moving portrait of human courage. Also not to be missed is Babe Ruth's cameo appearance as himself. Cooper's performance is outstanding, measuring up to the drama that surrounded the real-life events. Review:
Historically, only a few baseball movies have done well at the box office, mostly because audiences are lukewarm to portrayals of heroes of the diamond. Sam Wood's The Pride of the Yankees, however, is an exception, and an improbable one: neither producer Samuel Goldwyn nor star Gary Cooper knew anything about baseball, and it seemed unlikely that anyone was going to pay money to see a story in which everyone knew the outcome. Goldwyn may not have understood the sport (he thought players got promoted up through the bases, from first base to third, and couldn't understand why Gehrig was such a great player if he was "only" a first baseman), but he understood the public better than almost any other producer. The poignancy of Gehrig's story -- he became a sports hero out of a modest upbringing only to see fate strike him down, and then accepted that fate with heroic stoicism -- might've played well at any time, but the fact that America was heading into a war in which people with would be sacrificing themselves made the material even more topical. Though Cooper threw with the wrong hand -- requiring the film to be flipped, so that players had to run from home to third and wear uniforms with reversed numbers -- he portrayed Gehrig with perhaps even more dignity than the real man possessed, and his romantic scenes with Teresa Wright as Gehrig's wife were warm and honest. Director Wood's understated, unpretentious telling of the tale captured the subject of baseball but also provided a snapshot of Americans in general, and how we wanted to think of ourselves on the eve of World War II. As an alternative, he decides to kick-start a new career as a filmmaker extraordinaire by mounting the country's first epic drama - a lavish onscreen recreation of Romania's struggle for independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1877. Thus commences the young man's arduous and oft-nebulous seriocomic struggle between the requirements of art and the demands of business. While difficult, Ursache's effort does ultimately produce the film that he desires: the real-life Romanian masterpiece Independenta Romaniei (The War for Independence, 1912). His goal is simple: to convince a dubious Romanian public that cinema, as an art form, can exist on par with theater. Throughout the film, Caranfil intercuts sequences from Brezeanu's original motion picture, which underwent restoration just prior to the production of Restul e Tacere.

Review:
Idealistically ignoring the negative elements of the Wilson regime (notably his attitudes toward racial relationships), Wilson is not so much a biography as a paean to the late president. Though too long and overproduced, the film survives as one of Hollywood's sturdiest historical films of the 1940s. However, audiences did not respond to Wilson as Zanuck had hoped; the film was a terrific flop at the box office, so much so that it was for many years forbidden to speak of the project in Zanuck's presence. Still, Wilson garnered several Academy Awards: best original screenplay, best color art direction (Wiard Ihnen), best color cinematography (Leon Shamroy), best sound recording (E. H. Ruby Dee provides extra mysterious insinuations as Female, the sibling's live-in servant in their French-style mansion, and John Heard is perfectly cast as Oliver, the animal biologist and love interest of Irena.

This classic story of Mob informers was based on a number of true stories and filmed on location in and around the docks of Hoboken, New Jersey. Mob-connected union boss Johnny Friendly (Lee J. The police and the Waterfront Crime Commission know that Friendly is behind a number of murders, but witnesses play deaf and dumb ("D&D"), submitting to their oppressed position rather than risk the danger and shame of informing. Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando) is a dockworker whose brother Charley (Rod Steiger) is Friendly‘s lawyer. Some years earlier, Terry had been a promising boxer until Friendly had Charley instruct Terry to deliberately lose a fight that he could have won, so that Friendly could win money betting on the weaker opponent.

Jean Cocteau reminisces about the people he has known throughout his long life (he died at 74) in this fascinating documentary by Edgardo Cozarinsky. Starting with still photographs of Satie, Diaghilev, Nijinsky and Stravinsky just before the outbreak of World War one, Cocteau evokes the heady atmosphere of experimentation that was prevalent in Europe. In the Twenties, there is the affair with Radiguet, the only lover Cocteau had who was his equal, and who died very young. Stills show a very determined, even pugnacious, teenager. There are scenes from the films, especially the famous ending of Les Parents terribles, with the jerky dolly shot, which had to be improvised. It's a wonderful trip down memory lane with an artist who knew everybody.

Le Testament d'Orphee, the last film made by Cocteau, is a visual summing up of the poet's own life. In it Cocteau gazes, one after the other, into the multiple mirrors of his loves and his works, re-creating his personal myth. He called it "an active poem." The film was shot on location at Les Baux in the South of France, a landscape whose rough limestone canyons appealed to Cocteau even more than Greece. Francine Weinweller and the main crew put up at that gourmet's mecca, the Hostellerie de la Baumaniere. Francine had a costume part in the film as La Dame qui s'est trompe d'epoque. All the icons out of Cocteau's past were woven into the visual testament - mirrors, horses, flowers, tapestries, and many of his friends - Dermit, Marais, Yul Brynner, Picasso and his wife, among others, appeared in Orphee II.
