Critically acclaimed films aren't always successful at the box office, and I remember first seeing this the week it was released in a near empty theater. I was a film student at the time, and thought nothing could be better than a film about the making of a film. Up to that time, Turffaut's "Day for Night" (1973) was arguably the best of the genre. In my opinion this film equals it... and maybe tops it.

The film opens with a hilarious scene of a dog doing its thing, and we're simultaneously introduced to Cameron. Steve Railsback is wonderful in his portrayal of a jittery and jumpy Vietnam veteran who is on the run from the police. As he's running a stunt man is killed, and circumstances shortly after land Cameron in the middle of the film set. He's saved and trapped at the same time - saved from the grasp of the cops, but trapped into working as the deceased stunt man's replacement. He was nominated for a Golden Globe award for best new star.

Peter O'Toole won a best actor award from the National Society of Film Critics, and was nominated for an Academy Award and for a Golden Globe for his portrayal of a director who is searching as he shoots. This is one of his best roles ever, as the brash and bossy Eli Cross who is hard as nails but with a heart of gold. Or so we think at first... But as the film progresses we wonder, as does Cameron, if the finished film is more important to Eli than the life of a stunt man, and whether he'll allow Cameron's fate to follow the fate of the man he's pretending to be.

Barbara Hershey is sweet, sassy, and fabulous in her role as Nina, the lively leading lady who falls for Cameron. At times we don't understand their attraction for one another, but nonetheless they are drawn together, and we find ourselves pulling for them.

The film questions reality versus false perceptions, and we the audience are often taken for a ride. At times we are privy to the workings of a film in progress, first seeing what an audience would see at the end, then finding out that what we are really seeing is a movie in making. But it's not just the movie being made that misleads us, but the movements and motivations of the characters outside of their jobs. Who's doing what to whom, why, and what's going to happen next? On the surface this is a very funny film, but underneath it all this is an interesting psychological drama that questions what moves us, and why we allow ourselves to be moved in different ways.

There's never a dull moment as this film moves along, filled with snappy dialog, great stunt sequences, lots of laughs, and many, many memorable lines.

Richard Rush made a masterpiece. He was nominated, in his role as director, for outstanding achievement by the Director's Guild, as well as for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe,
Along with these honors, he was nominated, with Lawrence B. Marcus, for the following screenplay awards: a Writer's Guild of America award, a Golden Globe, and of course, an Oscar.
He won an award at the Montreal World Film Festival.

Askoldov's film, "The Commissar," is about a pregnant woman who takes refuge with a Jewish family during the Russian Revolution. After her son is born, the town is overtaken by the counter-revolutionary White Army. She flees the town and her son to rejoin her regiment. The film also depicts the Jewish family's fate during the holocaust. "The Commissar" was produced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Russian Revolution.

Description of Incident: From the onset of production, Askoldov was forced to make changes to his film. Members of Goskino believed that the film presented the revolution too dramatically, and not heroically enough. Askoldov was forced to change the character's language to make her appear less coarse, and to make the birth scene so it was less natural. After the Six Day War, Goskino had Askoldov change the nationality of the Jewish family and remove all references to the holocaust. In 1968, Askoldov recieved a letter commenting on the vulgar manner that the character crushed her sugar lumps in one scene. In March of 1969, Askoldov was dismissed from the film and reprimanded by the Communist Party.

Results of Incident: In 1986 the "Conflict Commission" of the Film-makers Union recommended the re-release of "The Commissar." Goskino refused to act. After a plea from Askoldov at the Moscow Film Festival, the film was reconstructed in 1988. It won the Silver Bear Special Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival in 1988.

Synopsis: A Short Film About Killing is Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski's feature length adaptation of the hour long piece belonging to the Dekalog series, a collection of modern representations of the ten commandments set in a socio-realist Warsaw in Poland. This film, 'thou shalt not kill', is a film essentially about two separate 'murders'. Jacek, a young adolescent, kills an innocent taxi driver in a seemingly motiveless crime for which he is tried and executed at the hands of the state.
Inherently simple in terms of its plot, A Short Film About Killing is a complex indictment on all forms of killing, whether in the form of an act of brutal murder, or an organised and legal murder wrapped in the arms of the law. Kieslowski, clearly inspired by the human-issues documentary movement in the 70's, has presented the film as a bleak and depressing reality. Filmed on location, the run down post-cold war communist Warsaw in Poland provides a cold and melancholic back drop to the film. The documentary feel of the film is intensified by the way it is filmed, with no tracking or dolly shots, just an observing camera placing us, the undiscerning viewer right in the thick of it. This can make the affect of the scenes in the film somewhat sickening at times, however it was clearly intended by Kieslowski, who wanted to show how disgusting murder is. The subtle green filter used on the camera, gives the celluloid a dreary appearance, pertaining to the bleak mood of the film. This minimalistic photography allows us to focus on the detailed reactions and actions of the characters in the film, which come to a horrifying climax during both murder sequences, probably two of the most superbly executed murder sequences ever committed to film...

Kieslowski doesn't try to explain Jacek's murder because he clearly wants to avoid condoning it with motives that might make the audience feel sorry for him. Instead, Kieslowski simply presents Jacek's execution as a counterpoint to the murder of the taxi driver, thus forcing us to compare the the horrific nature of both acts, revealing the crux of the film. The first murder in the back of the taxi is with out a doubt horrific, but the execution is just as unforgivable, illustrating that although legal, capital punishment is devoid of humanity and veracity, in all the same ways as cold blooded murder itself. It is a brilliant illustration of the failings and contradictory nature of capital punishment, which replicate the actions of a murderer instead of upholding justice.
It was clearly the intention of Kieslowski to underline this in his film. He believed, like many others, that capital punishment has no place in the 20th century. I wouldn't be surprised if many who start this film as pro capital punishment, end up strongly against it by the time the credits roll. If this sounds too presumptuous, then consider the fact that A Short Film About Killing led to the suspension of capital Punishment in Poland. This surely proves the power of the film.

This is a movie about 4 guys without job, future or any kind of perspective. They spend their time on drinking, fighting, fanatically cheering for their local soccer club, lift shopping, stealing, drug smuggling, etc. So this movie shows how modern Croatian life becomes a copy of Western European countries. I like to say: That's what we fought for! For not having a jobs, not having any security, not having a lot of things that generation before us has had. Well, I don't want to sound nostalgic, but this movie shows to those who remember that we could do better (characters in the movie are too young to remember), much better. Now about movie itself.
I am amazed by realism, good dialogs, correct acting (at last realistic fight scenes), perfect camera, sound (the only real Croatian rock'n'roll band Majke). Not that I haven't seen those things in other movies, but not in Croatian (with few exceptions!). There is no real plot, things are just happening like any given day, and they are very well described.
All those things made me to give 9/10, as a support to Croatian movie makers to go where our neighbors (Bosina, Serbia, Romania) already came some time ago.

Low budget director Edgar G. Ulmer cemented his reputation with this downbeat film noir masterpiece. It has since inspired countless filmmakers. The use of minimal sets and rear-screen projection gives a feeling of a claustrophobic nightmare as Al (Tom Neal) a down-and-out piano player, hitchhikes from New York to Los Angeles in order to be with his singer girlfriend (Claudia Drake). Fate has other plans for Al when he steps into the car of a character named Haskel (Edmund MacDonald), who promptly dies in his sleep one night while Al is driving. Afraid the cops will never believe the truth, Al takes Haskell's money, car, and identity, and tries to make it to Los Angeles, only to have fate intervene again when he picks up a mean-spirited female hitchhiker (Ann Savage).

Dastaguir is charged with the horrifying task of notifying his son that the young man's wife and mother are dead and that his son, Yacine, is now deaf. Dastaguir is worried for his son's sanity and is plagued by memories of his daughter-in-law's shaming, which he was unable to prevent.

Philippe is a promising student about to sit his exams and who is looking forward to a successful research career. One day, Philippe and Daniel are in turn visited by a lawyer working for Amnesty International, who tells them that Hans has been arrested for possessing an illegal quantity of drugs. His death sentence will be commuted only if Philippe and Daniel surrender themselves to the authorities in that country and admit that some of the drugs in Hans’ possession belonged to them. Aware that by doing so, they risk a minimum of a two year prison sentence, neither Philippe nor Daniel are keen to go. But if they refuse, Hans will be executed within a week…

Ludo is sent off to an asylum, but escapes and takes up residence on a deserted beach in an old tanker that has run aground. This feature won the Grand Prize at the 1987 Barcelona Film Festival.
